Most linux users I know still dual boot to play games. This doesn't really bother them, and it shouldn't; you use the right tool for the job.
I love video games. Been playing them since we got our first computer. (An old AT) Dual booting does bother me. Why would I want to close down my xterms, Opera, and my IRC client just to play a quick game? Why shouldn't this bother me, its a big pain in the arse? Right tool for the job? Linux is no less capable for playing games than Windows. (except for the lack of directx... and even is this case SDL is just as good).
I had my IBM laptop harddrive die too. Which was surprising since none of the IBM drives I bought for my desktops have ever died. Only once I opened up the laptop I realized the hd wasn't even made by IBM.
I guess its cheaper for them to use non IBM disks.
because of misleading marketing. Then you better not buy Intel either. Remember when Intel was saying that the PIII would make your internet experience better? What a bunch of crap.

Hmm, I had no trouble with the mouse. The game preformed flawlessly on my IBM T21, very quick and responsive. (RH 7.1 Xfree86 4.1.0, Savage IV) I guess your mileage may vary. Though if your vid card supports it I would highly recommend upgrading to X 4.1.0. My guess is this will fix your problem.
depends on your distribution. If you are using a RH based one the easiest way is to use the chkconfig util. (chkconfig gdm off). Or go to the/etc/rc3.d and delete the gdm link.
Uhh, you decided NOT to buy the system? What the hell is wrong with you. The DC is only $99. Controllers and memory cards start at $20 and cheaper. Used games of the classic must haves are plentiful and cheap. The system is a bargain. Ever since I got my DC in november (when it dropped to $150) I haven't touched my Playstation. I've logged over 200 on Phantasy Star Online alone. Buy the system. Goto any game site and look at the best video games of 2000. Many of the best games of 2000 are DC titles, you don't want to miss out.
You could probably get a used DC with a bunch of games for $150 bucks. A similar PS2 setup would cost you close to half a grand.
If you have a Solaris 2.x install (any version but 8), and you're at a remote site...
And you need to login as root (The only active account on the system). But the system tells you "Not on system console"
1) What system setting is preventing the login?
2) How do you fix it?
actually, can you please tell me how to fix this? I do some basic Sun Admining and have run into this problem.
I what Indrema is shooting for is a platform that is so easy to develop for (open source tools and OpenGl) and has such a low barrier to entry (just need a decent linux box) and has cheap and easy to get licensing, that many companies will try and make a quick buck by doing Indrema ports.
Will this work? Who knows. Indrema might make it if it has cool functionality, like the ability to do TiVO stuff and play divx movies and stuff.
It seems that Athlon always blows away P3, P4 at all 3d games except quake. Does q3 use SSE or something? Why doesn't it have any 3dnow. (I think most hardcore games would rather buy an athlon for the excellent price performace ratio). I just hope Doom3 is not heavily optimized for P4 only, eventhough id might have the bucks to shell out for high end Intel stuff, we frugal gamers prefer the Athlon line.
Netscape performs very well on my linux destop... goes for weeks without crashing and opens links in new windows faster than any other browser I have seen. (including IE 5.x on Win 2000) Yes it has some format problems and can't handle css, but I really don't feel its all that bad, certainly not a putrid pile of refuse.
I also use Mozilla, I have to say that while it has a few bugs it really does get better everyday. And yes most people that are happy with IE won't bother to switch to NS 6.0 or mozilla.
However people are forgetting the millions of people that use AOL. Once NS 6.0 is done and stable AOL will switch over. This will allow them to make cheap linux based web pads and not be dependent on MS.
This is for the people who don't know how Indrema will make their money....
If you want to sell a game for indrema you will have to pay a per unit licensing fee. This is how they will make their money. The open part is the the SDK and the API. (The only parts that aren't open are the content signature stuff.)
Sorry, I know this is a bit off topic but I'm sick of people saying Indrema because they think they will make money off the console. (They'll make it by licensing, same as everybody else)
and Felicity, where some guy uses some program called zztop.exe to reformat his hard drive
Actually you can find this program on most dells. Running it will restore the factory installed image of windows. I have done it a couple of times. (Tech Support)
He also talks about how easy it's gonna be to port to the box, but, you can't run applications from the box on a normal Linux machine, and the opposite is also true. Problem is, what's thier advantage here? If it's easy to port back and forth, what advantage is this going to give the developer, who already has an installed base of PC's running Linux he can develop for? (I know, same argument can be made for the X-Box. At least with it you have some really good hardware reasons to go that direction, maybe.)
The reason you would port is the installed base of PC's running linux he can develop for is incredibly small. This is a console something your ordinary Joe can operate. Not only that but the box has better hardware than your typical linux box and has an OS, libraries and API's all tuned specifically for it.
Um.. they will their money just like all the other consoles do... by licensing. If you want to put a a free game you may do so and you will pay no licensing fee. However, if you wish to sell a game for profit you must pay a license fee.
Having Linux as a console OS is the dumbest idea I ever heard.
Ever wondered why $200 games consoles outperform $1000 machines? Yes, that's right, because they're built for the job.
Linux is full of all kinds of redundant code, and will always lag behind real consoles.
Linux is opensource which means it can be built for the job. Obvioulsy DV Linux will remove all the junk it doesn't need. $200 game consoles outperform $1000 pcs because the hardware is static. IES developers know that this box will have such and such nvidia card that can utilize specialized OpenGL extensions because they don't have to worry about people without those extensions (everyone has the same hardware). Games on PC are slower because you have to try to make your code compatible with the widest range of hardware.
Open Source doesn't have any innovation, and will always be playing catch-up with the commercial software. Where's DirectX? Not there. OpenGL: not an open source innovation.
OpenGL is not open source... but it is an open API. Actually until recently DirectX had to play catch up to OpenGL. IES won't lag behind anything... the OpenGL extensions will make full use of the hardware, and not only that stuff can be updated as the platform evolves.
I will not buy a machine that is completely controlled by Microsoft. Its bad enough they have so much influence in the PC world... Too bad Sony is a bitch of a company as well... I guess I'll go with Indrema for my console needs, since they have the most open platform.

We use SSL/IMAP with cyrus, and use netscape(now iplanet) for calendaring. I don't use the canledaring much, but everyone here seems to like it.
then you need to get new friends. Anyone who turns down a lan party for a movie is dumb.
CPU: AMD Thunderbird 1.2GHz Socket A 266MHz
good
RAM: DDR SDRAM 2100 2 * 256 MB Socket A
good, but how can you get Socket A ram
Harddrive: Western Digital Caviar 7200 RPM 40 GB
I've had bad exp with Western Dig....
Motherboard: Asus A7M266,
too expensive, Sis735 cheaper and performs better. KT266A is even better if you can wait
Sound Card: Creative Soundblaster Live! 1024
sb live is well supported, just dl the drivers from creative's site. (kernel drivers aren't as good)
Video Card: Matrox Millenium G450 32MB DDR-Ram
I would go nvidia here, easier to get 3d working well (unless 3d is not as important)

How completely stupid, but funny.
Do you think that if I made a game for Linux I could get free advertising on Slashdot as well?
Probably, if it was good enough. I think good commercial linux games are rare enough that it can be considered news.
