I was in the US in a shared house with a bunch of travelers and this American guy was vacuuming the floor with an old vacuum cleaner that was not too effective.
Him: "Damn, this vacuum cleaner sucks!!" Me: (Laughing) "You mean it doesn't suck" Him: "No, it sucks. It's not picking any dirt up. It sucks man, it sucks!"
It took him a while to figure out why I was laughing so much.
Clothes, media players, cameras, outdoor gear, toys, games etc. are all considerably more expensive in the EU than in the US.
In my job I have been making two or three trips to the USA a year, and have pretty much stopped buying these items in the EU. I take a couple of empty light holdalls in my hand baggage on the way out, and then check in a couple of full holdalls on the way back.
We have had this in sweden for a while now. It seems to be pretty successful. I have not used it, as i have my own bike, but i see a lot of people ridnig around on them.
I'd agree with the above. I worked for a.com company that was well known for buying an Aeron char for all it's employees. When thry started to run out of monay and had gone through the layoff period thay started selling the furnature, and i picked up two Aeron chairs for about 20% of the new price. My wife and I use them daily (me more than my wife) and they really are worth the high price tag.
Having said all this, a chair is a personal thing, different people will prefer different chairs. For such a large investment it may be worth taking him out to test a few chairs, get a feel for what works best, and get some good advice from a knowlegable sales person.
....as the Bill in question has only been passed by the House of Animals. It's got to go before the House of Vegetables yet. Many commentators think it is not going to do too well there.
There's been so many articles on what fuel, or what car is going to be big in the next few years. Seems to me we have had the answer around for a number of years.
I usually cycle to work in the summer, in Stockholm its quicker than driving or taking the subway, and parking is not a problem. It's easy to stay fit cycling and, provided you find a good route, probably a lot safer than driving.
There's bound to be a bunch of excuses about not having a great route to work, or living too far from work etc. But it's something to think about if you re-locate or change jobs. I have not owned a car for over 10 years, and for 9 of them i have commuted on an old city bike a got for $60. I've probably spent another $50 on maintainance in that time. Add in all the health benifits, and money saved, and it does seem to be a pretty sane option to consider.
I heard Microsoft were negotiating a deal to use this tune as a promotion and re-launch of the XP operating system. This was meant to be scheduled for the first of this month, but i have not heard the full details yet.

In the old days if you were on the MS platform you could get by with VB6 or C++, SQL Server, ASP and maybe a bit of COM.
Then came.net and it was a case of learning.net, which most of the MS (and quite a few of the Java) programmers could handle.
Now there is just too much suff to know if you are going to work on the MS stack:
Dotnet 3.0 Dotnet 3.5 LINQ Workflow Foundation Communication Foundation Presentation Foundation SilverLight SQL 2008 VS 2008 Visual Studio Team System Server 2008 IIS7, WAS MOSS 2007 Office Development
We will have.net 4.0 betas out in the not too distant, many ppl i chat with (i work as a trainer and developer) are still on.net 2.0 and have never looked at 3.0, never mind 3.5.
Communication Foundation is a great technology, really nice architecture for building web services, trouble is not too many ppl have had time to look at it, and it takes quite a while to get your head around. If ppl had the time to focus on it thay would develop the compitence to build applicaitos with it and drive up the demand.
I've chatted with a lot of people regarding this and pretty much everyone feels the same, there's just not time to learn one technology before the hype shifts to something else. It's pretty much a full time job learning about the latest developments in a specific area.
>>The video bitrate is 34kbps. Absolutely horrid. Do they reserve the decent quality video for people inside the UK?
Yes.
It's a pain being an ex-pat living abroad. The BBC is funded by the UK government and UK licence payers and aimed at UK viewers. I usually set Newsnight running in a player window and listen to it whilst working, it's not something you would watch without multi-tasking. Shame they can't just upload it to youtube or bittorrent if they want to budget on bandwidth.
>>Imagine if industry people and politicians in the US were subjected to this sort of probing interview...
It's worth wathing NewsNight in the US when they cover US items (the BBC makes every program available on the web after broadcast). Sometimes Jeramy Paxman will get his teath into American politician or representative who is completly un prepared for this type of interview. It happened to someone high up in the US (can't remember who) administration in the lat Iraq conflict and he was really knocked back by the interview.
Also Jeramy Paxman has been starting to get really sarcastic about some things lately, it's funny to watch.
The link is here.
Much better than the CBS news "And now some puppies will lick your face" and the BBC news "Post apocalyptic rave".
>>But it might not just be money they are looking at to determine success. >>More exposure and new fans could appear from the multitudes of downloaders.
Absolytly. I'd guess that Tom and the guys are doing pretty well for themselves after 10 years of being considered as one of the best bands in the world. They have also not sold out and create the music they want to create instead of what will be popular. Exposure to new fans and publicity will allow them to continuee to do this.
Even if you did 'pirate' the album, and like there music, you should go see them live. I've seen them twice (once at Glastonbury in the mud of 97, which is often listed as the best live show ever). They are one of the best live acts around.
If we do get to the stage where the "yoof" just download everything from torrents, good bands will still be able to make good money playing live. There will never be a way to copy or download the feeling of a live concert.

Well it's one sure way to prevent people downloading it from BitTorrent.

If this is anything like the other PirateBay cases i can't wait to see the legal corrispondance.
