You don't have to "cheat" in order to be aware of many of these limitations. All you have to do is attempt to use these devices in anyway other than their extremely basic functions. Which means that probably > 50% of the people will never know about it, but enough will, and hopefully they'll be enough to persuade the others not to use/buy the new devices.

Man, stuff like this keeps moving me closer and closer to just buying a hi-fi stereo integrated-amplifier instead of a surround receiver.

Gateway Country stores are a front for Gateway's online store essentially. However, over the holiday season they decided to keep some stock in the stores on three of their most popular default configurations.

That's why I think Apple stores should carry stock on at least iMacs and possibly iBooks. There's very little customization going on on those two products to begin with, so they make perfect sense.

It's stuff like this that makes me think perhaps Apple should start opening some stores like Gateway has. They could stock iMacs and iBooks and everything else could be mail-order, but at least the customers would have someone that knows something about Macs answering their questions and working computers to test out. (all of the computers at Circuit City run a demo program that you can't quit unless you know the key sequence)

I was in Circuit City over the weekend looking at Macs with my girlfriend (who wants an iBook). There was a guy there that said he worked for Apple as a Mac-demo guy on the weekends and is a graphics design guy during the week. He was really very helpful even though he was more at home with Apple's higher end boxes than the consumer-oriented stuff they sell at Circuit City.

    I was impressed.

The point is simply that in the future, the PC will be the appliance. We are already seeing signs of it. Apple, INtel, Compaq and Sony all have computer models with DV options to edit and store digital video. Say goodbye to the VCR. It is also in the works to have af ully networked home piping mp3 music through to every room in the house, say goodbye to individual stereos. PC's can already do email, http, ftp, and instant messaging quite well (and no, it's NOT that difficult to get online, it was somewhat difficult 5 years ago, but with Earthlink, AOL, and other huge providers and their software, anyone can do it).

I don't know. I see homes having an information server and several clients connected to it. For instance, if I were to use OggVorbis sound files to listen to music through out the house, I would want an OggVorbis compatible player sitting with the rest of my audio components in the living room connected to my LAN. I'd like to have something like the eVilla (or an iMac) sitting on the desk in my kitchen connected to the LAN.

Secondly, I don't see why one would want to break from a "dominant" standard. There comes a point where it is more trouble to reinvent something than it is worth. I suppose it won't ruffle any feathers since the target audience of this device will be almost exclusivly people with little to no computer experience, but still, something bothers me about the fact that almost everything out there today is written for a horizontal aspect ratio.

Perhaps we can dream, and when something like this gets accepted by enough people, the 'Web developers' out there will finally start developing good Web pages that render well in different environments. :)

Graeme Devine was brought on for game design on Quake 3 Arena. However, I think he was brought on kind of late which is why Quake 3 Arena's gameplay was lacking. However, Quake 3 Team Arena (the expansion) is very nice and I attribute much of that to Graeme.

However, you're right, Carmack really shouldn't be blamed for gameplay because he's mainly interested in engine development. But, he does think about gameplay and has many good ideas, it's unfortunate most of them did not make their way into Quake 3.
