Every year during my review as a manager, the same question comes up, what have I done to improve customer satisfaction. So anything you discuss that is negative, must result in decreased profits or decreased customer satisfaction. Thats the only two things that upper management understand. Efficiency, productivity, employee moral, means nothing to them. If you show a problem is affecting the bottom dollar or affecting the customers in a negative manner, they will listen.

One way to prevent the crap rolling down the hill is try to point out the catch 22.Show that both you and your managers are caught and that someone at the higher level is going to have to give the OK to take more drastic action to resolve the catch 22. So many times the bigger problem in resolving issues is that the responsibility lies in our hands but the authority lies in someone elses hands. Thats what creates a stress full situation.

Last, never get emotional about an issue. People who show calm in any situation will get more attention in the long run because they show control and confidence. Emotion is a negative thing in communications.

    Otherwise, your screwed.

  8. Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics on Linux Most Attacked Server? · · Score: 1

I was hoping the article would provide the reader with sufficient information to make an informed decision. The percentages are based on sucessfull attacks but fail to inform the reader what percentage of all servers in use for each OS were attacked.

According to Netcraft, the percentage of servers running Apache is about 62% in May (old but thats the fastest article I could find, Google for newer http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF -8&q=percentage+of+apache+web+servers )and the percentage of servers running IIS is 27%.

So naturally there will be more attacks on Apache than IIS, but also the percentages are in proportion the number of total servers, so it does not appear to be unbalanced.

Lastly if you take desktop OS as an example you have the same problem. There tens of thousands more virus and worms for Windows than for Linux, because Windows has the greater share of market for desktop OS.

My last paragraph did state it should allow consumers to sue the companies that hire spammers. The companies being those who are in the content of the spam message. If companies know that using spammers is too risky, and could get them suid, they will stop using them and then the spammers have no income to support their business(sic). Similar to the drug war, by stopping the columbian cartels, you stop the drugs at its source. This would drive them into unprofitability.

I regularly forward every spam I get to uce@ftc.gov and let him determine if the content is illegal and let them go after those people. They have the resources and manpower to stop the illegal offers.

As for the forged headers, many people have proposed replacing the email system with another system that would make it impossible or extremely difficult to forge headers. Until then we will have to use a combination of legislation and technology to combat the spam.

I agree with some of the statements that the second bill does not go far enough. It should be crime to forge any email headers and there should be mandatory jail time for anyone who forges a mail header.

And lastly the bills should allow consumer to sue those companies advertised in the spam. Make it too expensive for the companies to use that avenue and they will stop hiring these damn spammers.

Except for sleeping, we now do twice as much or more, to match up to Mr. Jones who owns a big house and dresses lavishly. Mr. Jones has made use feel guilty for not following his standards. He makes us feel guilty for not being individuals.

So we take shortcuts to save time here and there. Use a PDA or Voice Mail to communicate. Every tool has its place and none should complete replace the other.
