That is exactly what hit me as I got through this article - does the same stuff, with a better interface and ethernet built-in. You could probably play games on 'em, too.
The place that I work is working with one of the teams to ensure that manufacture and treatment of the fabric used is as close as possible to the original. "Another area of research...is the determination of the finish used on the fabric. Air proofing the fabric may have been a trade secret of the Wright Brothers. There was mention of a finish in the Wright brother's log book, but never mentioned again."
I'm not using any names because I'm not sure that I'm allowed. I'm just one of the IT guys...
I have a wireless setup at home and absolutely love it. I also assume that everything I do on the network is transparent and so take appropriate steps when the situation is called for. Props to all the developers of GPG and OpenSSH.
And - this type of thing will only eventually lead to us having a more secure wireless networking protocol. Aren't you glad that these guys have the freedom to this kind of research?
I went to art school for painting, not at all thinking of having any career. During graduate school I was exposed to the Mac lab w/ Premier, Director, and Photoshop. This was early 1997... I found the internet soon after that, and have evolved into a programmer/DBA that can also do decent graphics work. And I'm still on a Mac...
I used to have cable through mediaone. THey used my MAC address for something, because when I switched computers I needed to call them and have them make some adjustment somewhere. I did this 3 or 4 times. Adelphia (current provider) doesn't do this. Any ideas on what mediaone was doing?
AOL has a history of making computer stuff easy to do. What if they pulled a slick, easy to use Linux out of this? Look at the interface Apple put on Unix, and they have to keep happy a much more broad user group than AOL...
1) I've never hear anyone describe Windows as "as user friendly as possible". You may have never used a Mac
2) "with a GUI similar to windows" --- It would be more realistic to describe Windows as having a GUI similar to the Mac, considering which came first.
At work I've been using iMovie on a nice dual processer G4 heavily for the past few weeks and have been amazed at what kind of difference there is between that box and my G3 iMac... most consumers won't get crazy for video, but it is something that more and more people are doing.
I used to read a British motorcycling magazine that had adverts for maps of where cameras were on the roads so that they migh be avoided. These cameras are part of a system that snap the tags of speeders and set in motion the auto generation of speeding tickets.
Milk may or not be all that good for adult people. You may have been coopted by the dairy industry. Check out http://www.notmilk.com/ or pick up a copy of Diet for a New America.
Notice that 1) I have directed you towards a website 2) that undermines big business 3) and offer an alternative that is actually a book (the big picture).
Television does none of these things very well. And milk is bad for you.
I used to work for a company that makes money as a Seat Management partner for the state of VA. What this means is that the company does something similar to leasing equipment to the state. This company is one of 4 or so 'approved vendors'. Each vendor offers a set number of packages, each standardized around offerings from Dell or Gateway or Compaq. To my knowledge they all ship w/ Windows, tho some would go out w/ a totally blank disk. These include servers, all of which at the time were NT 4. This was pushed by the Republicans Governor's office, but didn't seem to be taken too fondly by the different departments.
FROM http://www.seatmanagement.state.va.us/ - " a program that bundles a desktop PC and a suite of necessary support options for Virginia agencies and institutions. Your organization can transfer the responsibility of supporting the life cycle of desktop computers and servers, in exchange for a nominal fixed "per seat" fee. This fee includes: a new PC every 1, 2, or 3 years, project management, initial desktop rollout plan, configuration, installation, user orientation on new PC, maintenance, asset management, disposal and technology refresh, plus optional services."
I am a Mac user, but this is how I see this might be important: one of the great things about Linux is the approach and attitude of the developers - the community, the very nature of open source, the difference from the 'closed' operating systems (including my beloved OS X). If you run Linux as your primary OS because using anything else seems like an intolerable sell-out, having the ability to emulate another OS that provides otherwise unavailable functionality is a way more viable solution that giving up your freedom just to be able to see Quicktime movies and run Photoshop. I don't feel like I have stated this very well - can someone that uses Linux add to this?
and I think for the exact same reason that today seems so horrible... the movie gives the idea that we should just toss it all and start from scratch - the book I think acknowledges that our culture has some value, and even the extraneous crap (like IKEA) exists because we have achieved something worthwhile. or something like that...

Does this scare anyone else?
>>everything has to be started from scratch
>>and nobody seems willing to even consider the
>>lessons learned in the past.
Except maybe Apple, who rewrote their entire OS based on Unix for its proven stability, ability to play nice with others, etc etc...
