Hollings wins, but not by large margins. Many people in South Carolina think he's too liberal to represent them in Washington.

Unfortunately, the SC GOP hasn't realized that it isn't too smart to antagonize the 1/3 of the voters in SC who happen to be a different color than they are.

A good Republican candidate could easily defeat Hollings. ...but that would require the SC GOP to actually do something smart for a change.

True, no one ever lost an election by underestimating the stupidity of South Carolina voters.

All the Republicans have to do is remind the voters of his full page ad that he bought in The State (Columbia, SC) paper defending Bill Clinton in 1999. (Most SC voters HATE Clinton.) Since then it's been more of the same. He'll lose on his liberal voting record, not on trying to infringe on our freedoms.

Is it any coincidence that Hollings is the spokesman for all of these bills that are harmful to consumers, but loved by Hollywood? Quite simply, no one in South Carolina cares. I live in South Carolina and I haven't heard any media converage about this.

Hollings is the spokesman for this because he won't take any heat from his constituants. As long as he brings the pork back to Charleston, he'll keep getting re-elected. (Let's face it, getting re-elected to the Senate in South Carolina isn't that difficult.) South Carolina is perhaps the least techonologically savvy states in the country (#1 in percentage of population living in mobile homes, #1 in rates of STD infection, #51 in SAT scores.) People here are too concerned with the damn Confederate flag to notice.

My point is that Disney has lots of other Senators in their pocket. It's just that only Hollings can be so blatant about it.

It amazes me how quickly people that have anything to do with computers like to declare them obsolete.

It reminds me of the guy who had an old 68k Macintosh running Word 5.1. He knew how to use it and it did everything he wanted it to do.

One day the IT people at his company took his mac away and gave him a new PC because the mac was "too slow" Well, what happened?

First of all, he was not familiar with the PC or with the new features availible in Word. Second of all, many of these new features were more annoying than useful, especially when the newer version of Word autocorrected something that didn't need correction. Also. considering that this new, more complex software is both more demanding of hardware and more prone to bugs, He found that his new system was slower than his old one and more prone to crashing.

So, why again was that Mac obsolete?

  9. No place for Linux on the desktop on Bob Young says Linux won't rule the desktop · · Score: 1

Let's face it, there's enough competition in the desktop market as it is. Most users don't care about what's under the hood, much less whether it's open or welded shut. They just want to get their work done. Mac OS X and Windows XP are considerably easier to use than Linux and are stable enough for most people. (Considering that these are many of the same people that became accustomed to a GUI during the days of MacOS 7.x and Windows 95, today's operating systems are quite stable.)

Another problem with Linux on the desktop is the lack of applications and games. There simply isn't a market for it. Yeah, you can install WINE, but can you see Joe User wanting to or being able to install it and getting it configured properly? What use is the stablity of Linux if I have to reboot to Windows every time I want to play Age of Empires?

Linux has its place, but not on most people's desktops. It's great for embedded devices. Great for servers too. Great as a Unix workstation. Great for high-end graphics workstations (although MacOS X may provide stiff competition in this area) However, for the average user who wants to get on AOL, listen to some mp3's, burn a CD (try THAT in Linux), and type up some papers in Microsoft Word, it's not going to be a viable choice anywhere in the near future.

You say that Solaris/x86 sucks, which it probably does for a server installation, but the intel machines are considerably faster as a workstation. Sun's biggest problem is that they have saddled a workstation with a really nice processor with a really sh!tty graphics card. Even the older video cards on the Gateway PII-300's beat the hell out of even the newer Creator 3d cards on the Ultra 10's. X performance is terrible, especially with the bloated CDE running. As for Linux vs. Solaris, as far as performance is concerned, Linux wins hands down. Admittedly I don't own a SPARC, but on Intel my Gateway PII-300 can run Linux quite comfortably, while the simlarly configured computers at the school running Solaris 7 seem a bit sluggish in comparison. However, it should be noted that both kick Win 2k's ass. Our school recently "upgraded" to Windows 2000, only to find that Lose 2k is so bloated that everything under a PII 400 Mhz is obsolete.
