  1. The Big Book of Brain Games: 1,000 PlayThinks of A on Ask Slashdot: Math-Related Present For a Bright 10-Year-Old? · · Score: 1

I got this for my 9 year old. The problems are rated on 10 scale, so he can easily concentrate on 1 through 4 and leave more challenging ones for when he's older.

  2. Ah, it's so nice of him. on Pope Francis Declares Evolution and Big Bang Theory Are Right · · Score: 1

Ah, it's so nice of him. The problem is though that there is an explicit and direct contradiction between an evolutionary worldview (supported by vast body of evidence) and a creator-based (2000 year old) worldview. His quote "He created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfillment." is one of the most ridiculous mix-ups I have ever encountered.

One way this can play out is that the car makers will self insure (i.e. their own cars). Ford, GM or Toyota are big enough to handle this.

So, accounting for gasoline engine's inefficiency and the fact that li-air is 43.2 MJ/kg is it now 4-5 times more efficient than gas?

  9. Comparable? on IBM Creates 'Breathing' High-Density Lithium-Air Battery · · Score: 2, Interesting

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_density#Common_energy_densities The energy density for gasoline 47.2 MJ/kg and Lithium air battery 9 MJ/kg. If five times less is "comparable" I wouldn't mind the li-air car cost of $4000 which is comparable to a regular gas car.

I thought FON http://corp.fon.com/en was doing this worldwide already. You install custom firmware on your router, share your Wifi with the community and then you can use other people's Wifi. They even have a google map with available FON locations. In my town of 100K people they have around 20 FON spots, which is not enough for blanket coverage, but better than nothing.

This situation strikes me as very similar to what happens in financial markets. The whole industry is not creating any value, since they primary occupation is buying paper and then selling it at a higher price. Some may argues, that the traders add efficiency and liquidity to company price formation. Can we apply the same argument to patent trolls?
