Possibly the filter that altered the photon that kept a slower speed, may have created virtual viscosity around it that slowed the photon down as if it was traveling though a different medium. Otherwise, it should have sped up to full speed after leaving the filter, even with a changed waveform.

Well color me cynical. The vote stated that the science is real. I will now eat the words in my original post and shut up while I ponder what happened to cause the Republican part to demonstrate common sense. They confuse me.

I missed some words in the stream due to video stutter. I first thought the upgrade was for one year only, then you had to pay a subscription fee that wasn't yet set. It turns out that the upgrade is likely free to Windows 7 through 8.1 users for one year and that's that. No annual fee, although some additional restrictions such as a mandatory MS account (Was really optional for 8.x, even though the OS setup steered you to sign up, in fine print you could select Local Account) are possible.

The Start menu really never went away in Windows 8.x. It was hidden. Open File Explorer. Under View make sure Hidden Items is checked. Then navigate to Program Data\Microsoft\Windows. There you'll see the Start Menu folder. Right mouse click on it and select Pin to Start. You now have the classic start menu tree available on the Start screen. Or you could drag it to the desktop and select Create Shortcut Here. It's been this way since Windows 8 went gold.

What is the deep thinking that went into this action? Why change the established process at all if it was working? The linked article doesn't give a very good explanation. Now only a select few will get advance warning. Are they afraid that the early information might give "bad guys' a leg up, or are they putting this off to buy themselves a few more days to decide which patches are least likely to cause problems?

  10. Cooling stand on Ask Slashdot: High-Performance Laptop That Doesn't Overheat? · · Score: 1

My tests show that laptop cooling stands with large fans that force ambient air into the lower shell vent openings help the machines run 5 to 10 degrees C cooler. Cost starts about $40 for an effective one. Start at NewEgg if you haven't looked at these before. There are even models that are designed to let you use the notebook computer on your lap using a padded cooling stand.

XP? Every version of Windows is vulnerable. This past week I cleaned out two Windows 7 PC's that had Cryptowall on them. Neither customer had backups, nor cared what they lost. I encourage all customers, both verbally and in writing, to make frequent data backups to a portable hard drive, or flash drive if the number of files is low, and to use an online backup service. Microsoft may lose substantial consumer business in the future as the instances of nasty Windows infections is increasing. Chromebooks don't have this issue. Most of my customers can't afford a Mac. So, Windows it is. For now.

  12. Re:Balloons on How Galaxies Are Disappearing From Our Universe · · Score: 1

Yes. Space has been "growing:" since the beginning of time. A galaxies mass warps space/time so it is not affected by the ongoing expansion of space itself. Like adding water to soup already on the pot, the solids in the soup do not expand from within when the water is added, Instead of being pushed apart, galaxies are attracted to one another. Our local group is an example of that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L...

We install Sandboxie on all computers that are in for service. The benefits of using it are explained to the customer. A rogue website only takes over the sandboxed session. If infected, close the box, delete the contents and you're up and running again. I do not comprehend why the "partial" sandbox of existing browsers is considered to offer protection. Full sandboxing is the only way to do so. Nothing short of a full sandbox is safe. The sandbox in 360 Total Security looks promising also. But, it needs to be selected from the right mouse click menu, when clicking on the browser icon. My experience is that people get lax and won't do this all the time. Of course, if someone uses a cloud backup service, like Carbonite, they can clean the viruses on the PC and then restore their files as long as their cloud files are not encrypted also.
