  1. Shuttle Astronauts killed by the EPA on Foam Shot Causes Damage to Shuttle Mockup · · Score: 3, Interesting
    Dryden Flight Research Center:

DRYDEN F-15B SUPPORTS SHUTTLE EXTERNAL TANK INSULATION TESTS
    http://www.dfrc.nasa.gov/Newsroom/NewsReleases/199 9/99-01.html
    Published in 1999

    fourth paragraph:

"The experiment was part of an effort to determine why small particles of spray-on foam insulation flaked off of the inter-tank section of the external fuel tank on Space Shuttle mission STS-87 as the Shuttle ascended. The new lightweight insulation material was developed to comply with an EPA mandate to reduce ozone-depleting chemicals released into the atmosphere. Although such flaking or erosion of the insulation off the external tank posed no safety hazard to the Shuttle or its crew, engineers wanted to determine its cause to prevent future maintenance and operational problems. The flights aboard Dryden's F-15B were just one of many tests to which the new insulation material is being subjected. "

The EPA required Nasa to continue using a foam that was not as safe as the older tank foam. The EPA has a direct responsiblity for this disaster.

Did it ever occur to you that no companies will go into Iraq unless the US and UK stabilize it?

It is in the interest of western nations to help install a democracy, hopefully one that is less hostile to us. We still pursue that goal in Afghanistan, and we will do the same in Iraq.

Allowing US companies to set up shop creates jobs and helps the Iraqi economy. These people not only live under the oppression of a dictator, but also the oppression of poverty. We can change that too.

  21. I buy a RH distro every year. on Snag the Red Hat 9 ISOs, via Cash or BitTorrent · · Score: 1

A friend and I decided that we believe in Red Hat enough to put our money down. Once a year I pay what I call my "red hat tax" by buying a boxed distro of Red Hat, usually the personal version for ~30 bucks. I purchased RH8 a few weeks ago, even though I had burned copies already. I've done this since RH 5.1 (my first linux). I have not subscribed to RHN, but I've considered it. I know the GPL says I don't have to buy the software, but I do it because it's good for Red Hat, and therefore it's good for Linux. That said, if I can find a mirror for 9 I'll grab it today. And sometime in the coming year, I'll pay for another distro. I do understand the need for revenue.

I have not purchased a Windows version since '98.
