How about another moving to another country for few months?
If you are single and no kids, how about trying to telecommute in another country? maybe for a couple of months.. you can try Indonesia, India or Philippines. For $300 - $800 you can get a decent hotel/apartment.. not big but more than enough for a single person. You have at least vacation and work at the same time.
So if you're in Philippines, you can get a usb 3g device that costs about $30 and connection fee of about $30 for a month.
I forgot their name but there is a company or two that I would describe as parasites. They try hard to have high visibility in search results when it comes to someone asking questions. When you click the link, however, you find that they want you to pay a fee to see the answer. Usually this is for basic technical support information that is not secret or otherwise proprietary in any way. I bet they had to work really hard to craft their pages in such a way that the Google summary gives no indication that it's a for-pay site. It makes me wonder if they are subsidized in some way or whether enough people really do pay them enough money to stay in business on their own
seems like experts-exchange.com, living off the contributed answers from its early years.
i just add -experts-exchange when i search for something.
I believed this service is far more successful in third world country. In some place there's no paypal or even the concept of wire transfer is quite alien to them. it's easier to send money through sms than going to the bank and depositing money to someone's account.
i think it's shortsighted idea from your boss if the reason alone were based on this.
remember that there are quite few forks on this etc. percona and others.
if you're familiar with mysql.. why not try exporting the data from sun mysql and try to load it up on percona's mysql or monty's mysql and see how it works.
if you're already familiar on administering mysql( and quite good at it ) -- that alone sometimes is worth not to switch.
newspaper are printed on web-fed sheet presses. unless news publishers will try to deploy hundreds of these printers on few corners of their target market.
i have mod points, i can modded you up but i'll just reply instead.
for now, iPod is doing well; but sooner or later some competitors will catch up.
this things happens in the philippines and i dunno how it affects other parts of the world. 7 years ago, star-tac is the king; it was overrun by nokia when nokia 3210 comes out of the market -- and then stays the lead until now and very very few people are buying motorola phones. 4 years ago, ericsson is not doing well in mobile phone market... and now after teaming up with sony -- they capture the old market formerly held by nokia.
This joint venture by Apple and Motorola is a win-win for both of them. Design/Interface/Usability teams will add value to a technology competitive products from Motorola -- like what Sony did to Ericsson.
sure you can buy your own, but hosting providers doesn't offers the features set webmail providers are offering. they develop or someone develop for them the anti-spam features w/c current hosting providers can't match.
and you have control over what gets saved and doesn't and who looks at it,
you can only control if it resides on your machine. as long as you just rent space, regardless you have full access to it, the host can still view what's inside if they want anytime of the day.
how about a slashdot crowd try to have a dialogue with him/them? sort of some funny stuff did by guys from http://www.419eater.com/ to spammers?
it might waste your time a little.. but you know? slashdotting him?

"or would I better off moving back home, getting a mindless but low-stress job, and teaching myself technologies in my free time?"
how young are you?
if you still have time, move back home and as you said you can teach yourself some technologies and your free time.
sometimes the only way to progress is to move few steps backward.
