    You're on drugs?
    Q3A 4 linux was out over a Year ago... and runs well with all cards which have 3d accel support under linux, either through the drivers that come with q3a, or those for XFree 3.3x, or DRI in XFree4, or suplied by hardware company...

    uhh and btw, Q3A was never PORTED by LOKI...
    ID developed Q3A under linux 'cause it's more stable that way; there was an interview in a german mag where one of the developers said 'if it crashes under linux, we can be sure OUR code f***ed up; under Win, almost anything including next office's coffee maker could be the reason'
    Loki just did the selling of the linux version...

    They just DO NOT HAVE ANY GAMES NOW which I would buy AND haven't done so already...
    SimCity? Erics Ultimate Solitaire? Alpha Centauri?

    If they had made it to release Heavy Metal FAKK2 or Deus ex by now, they woukd have gotten some $$ from me (and NOT via tuxgames but full price via their own shop, they are so blazingly fast there)...

    great. I have NO problems at all with paying $$ for linux software, as long as it's good software, and especially games, as those are the one thing that keeps the windoze freaks on their windoze...

    now if valve would think this far...

    one! single copy of the virus itself (then I upgraded my antivirus mailgate)

    one! additional warning from my antivirus mailgate that the little beast tried to get in...

    no! (NIL) files from other people...

    yea, same with me...

    since 2 months owning an dell inspiron 4000, no problems at all, battery lasts ~ 5 hours (at least that's what the linux kernel apm says), and lasts at least 2 hours under heavy load (watching DVD video). performance is good enough for UT or CS @ 800x600 under windows, or Q3A @ 640x480 under linux, the linux DRI for ATI chips is not very good yet... Also I know several people owning all kind of dell machines and never had any problems...


    What I think is: the people who don't have problems with any given kind of hardware/software/VCR/whatever are never known, but the people wh got the (few?) bad ones complain everywhere...

    but if May 98 is right, forget that patent... previous art... Remember that 'MS Plus' for win95... Too bad that KDE was only 1.0 in June 98.

    ahemmm...
    just a little story... my machine has the dreaded Nvidia GeForce in it.
    I booted from the SuSE7 install dvd, somewhere in the process of setting up X with sax I clicked on 'use 3d acceleration' and whooosh I get 300++ FPS from ssystem, and somewhat 100++ from q3a... no action taken by myself
    (ok except upgrading to xfree 4.0.1 and the latest nvidia drivers)

    I don't know if anyone has noticed a few things yet:

    a) q3a has been sold by loki for almost a year, and if you read their newsgroups, you see not very much problems related with kernel versions / distribution differences...

    b) the sources for quake1 and quake2 are out for I don't know how long, and there are already several free quake-clone projects.

    c) I don't know exact figures, but if the sales were so bad, loki would have shut down...

    d) If the linux version came such a long time after the windows version (uhh two weeks! almost an eternity!) why is it that the demo versions appeared for linux first?

    And if I remember it right, there was an interview in german c't, with one of the id developers, which summed up to 'we develop our stuff on linux'. If that's still true they should be able to do it properly, so that such issues as kernel versions, differences between distributions would never arise, right?

    Just found something nice on that:
    satelco e@sybox 500 it is called, basically a settop-box for surfing via your tv.
    It runs netscape in some newer version, with HTML 4.0, CSS and all that. What really kicks me is that it can be had with either a 56k modem, a ISDN interface or some 2MBit via TV cable or ethernet!
    look at http://www.satelco.de/ to find some rudimentary spec sheet in german. I also have a price (from a shop who sells PR presents for companies), they want DM 750 ($ 350) + VAT for that thing...

    in windows, I install the game xyz, setup says 'XYZ needs Directmurx 7.1, setup?'. ok dammit i install dirextx 7.1. Later I try old game abc which ran fine with directx 7.0, even if it came with directx 6.0, but now its broken...
    Or even worse, some App I really need but which should have nothing in mind at all with directX or the like, (quicken, quickbooks, ...) freaks out on this...
    in X11, I login with kdm/xdm/gdm/whatever, click on my 'games'-folder in kgoodstuff, choose from q3a, heretic2, soldier of fortune, Heavy gear2 or Civilization2, which all work fine without any hassle with drivers... and YES I am running a NVidia GeForce DDR on XFree 4.0!
    and don't brag me on performance, 250fps on ssystem in 640x480 or 75 fps in q3a in 1600x1200, highest quality, is enough for me :)
    have fun, good bye, and a friendly RTFM to all those all over the world who have problems with their geforce under linux...
    btw there is a good readme on using the geforce with those games, found here

    hey, don't blame me...
    Just got Soldier of fortune + heretic2, just after
    Heavy Gear2, Q3A and CivCTP... And yesterday the
    sipping note for descent3 came in.. :)
    Dunno what kinda problems other people have with
    their graphics cards, on my box those games
    work almost out of the box (of course I install the latest patches...)...
    And, it's NOT a 3dfx card I got! (ELSA Erazor X2)

    Here at eregion.de (but internal network, 192.168.x.y), I have:
    - gandalf (does everything, samba emulated PDC, print server, dhcp, nfs, nis, dns, mail, news, uucp, fax, dialin, users homedirs, mirroring of stuff, httpd, & & &)
    - aragorn (will takeover gandalf's job soon, as gandalf will become apache only)
    - gate (masquerading FW, maybe i'll rename it to hama or cerebrimbor)

    workstations are schleppi, little and bigone
