I use junkbuster on my firewall. Whenever I get new popups, I block them. Whenever I hit some site run by some private person who definitely needs the little income webvertizing can get him, I add that page to the 'no-block' list. Then, if I happen to get a popup that is really annoying (for example something that tries to install software on my box, which is quite funny, all that konqueror does with it is 'save as') I notify the website owner that he definitely needs a new ad partner, and block the site when I get the second installer from that site...
btw, I'm not sure if the installation of backdoor/spyware/dialer apps via insecurity in IE wouldn't count as hacking in germany....
we (my wife and me) had no special engagement rings. German 'tradition' in that matter is to buy the weddng rings but to wear them on the left hand, and put them on the right hand after the wedding. Both partners usually have the same ring (style-wise) and admit it, a diamond does look strange with a man... we have rings made from platinum and gold, platinum on the outside and gold on the inside.
Got a linux box which does nat for my DSL. so this little box talks NTP directly with the atomic clock which is the official time base for germany, and is a samba server. for windoze boxen: net time $server/set/yes in the domain logon script; for linux boxen its just NTP...
but www.norwaypost.com is only the site that has the story about it. as it has been/.ed right now, I only assume the server with the 'lost files' is somewhere else...
Yea, especially when you consider the fact that producing a CD from master to 'ready-to-sell' packages does take time.
One folk at one of the suse mailing lists once mentioned the fact that the cd producer they use needs roughly one month for that. Based on the assumption that they still use the same CD fab, this would mean that the 'kde3' they claim to use as default desktop in Suse8 will in fact be either kde3 beta2, or some spurious CVS snapshot. The gnome they put in suse8 is rc2.
Now is that a good idea? I don't think so, especially in the light of this previous article.
I normally are not a SuSE basher, but I won't touch that 8.0 with barbequeue thongs...

OPEN LETTER FROM... TO...
[adresses deleted for space reasons, see original document]
Dear Sirs, Dear ladies,
with this open letter I appeal to You in Your position as 'first subscribers' of the werk21 campaign at www.bundestux.de. I was surprised to find You to be of the opinion that 'to ensure economic competition, promote creative potential, secure the open market and generally re-emphasize the democratic aspects of German society, the German parliament would do well to support the introduction of free software as a prominent move towards the shaping of a new open society in the coming century.'
In Your statements You postulate to stick to democratic rules in the field of secondary IT usage, and come to the conclusion that 'It therefore seems to us the duty of a democratic state to support the use of open source systems.'
For me this means that on the other hand You are of the opiniion that any state which doesn't use Linux is undemocratic or at least not attending to its duties.
Now there are probably valid, fact-based reasons to postulate the use of open source software, but You surely will understand my position that the better reasons speak against switching the german bundestag from microsoft- to linux products.
But where's the connection of deciding for or against an operating system with 'democratic principles', and 'duties of a democratic state'? Open source is, as You say yourself, NO guarantee for free competition, as well as a decision for the deployment of products from my company is, and never has been, an 'undemocratic' decision. As first subscribers You demand of Yourself as members of parliament to see to open competition by deciding that open source would be the only viable alternative.
What You really do with those statements is a public discrimination of our products and services as undemocratic, and democracy-hindering. What my 1300 colleagues feel about accusations like those I have already learned by uncounted emails. What impact you created with our partners, uncounted small and middle-sized software developers, as well as with our customers who do not feel restricted in their understanding of democracy by the use of microsoft products I can only guess at the moment.
Therefor I want to appeal to You: Let's return to a fact-based discussion, out of interest for the best solution for the german bundestag. By the way, I don't think that a discussion is only reasonable if it supports our products. But the discussion should be based on a judgement of costs and usefulness of products and services, from the viewpoint of the user.
And you think making RMS a Gnome board member will fix this??? The father of HURD...?
Not very likely...
To be honest, after several tries (and finding that almost any given gnome app I'd like to use is in some sort of pre-alpha stage, with lots of 'not yet implemented' popups and lot of 'yet to bre written' pages in the docs) I don't really care much for GNOME anymore...
I don't want to see it go down the HURD path. But IMHO, with RMS in a leading position of any sorts, GNOME is doomed.
I will NOT make any statement on who's to blame for this.
just this fact:
I just went to their online store to order something (forget my previous rant, rune looks interesting, as does tribes2).
I also asked a friend on irc if he wanted some, to share shipping costs to germany.
He had NEVER heard of loki, and of the fact that they have a linux port of SoF, which he'd searched the 'net far and wide for months by now...
bye,
[L]
My personal policy on banner ads / popups:
I use junkbuster on my firewall.

in fact some tv official in the states already claimed that.
not at all

Linux client page...
it's just the right thing for the purpose,
because it's a static page. As well as the info on the linux client is static: There is no client.
bye,

most probably lots of ice, and a nice pond.
SCNR, [L]
you're here now?
get out. fast. as long as it's still possible.
german politicians are up the same tree.
when you have access to a time server via ntp, why don't you run the ntp daemon instead of a cron job?
Got a linux box which does nat for my DSL. /set /yes in the domain logon script; for linux boxen its just NTP...
so this little box talks NTP directly with the atomic clock which is the official time base for germany, and is a samba server.
for windoze boxen: net time $server

ever tried to click a link?
especially the 'read the rest of this comment' link?
its sort of a running gag. nothing more.

mfG....
all that remais for me is just to quote meat loaf...
'you took the words right out of my mouth...'
As you would have understood if you had a look at the bundestux homepage, the campaign isn't about servers but about workstations...
any proof for that?
Did you read the article?
the bundestux campain is about putting linux into
the offices of the GERMAN gouvernment...
yea...
data is in fact a so-called 'ideal gas' as it always tends to fill all available space.
and there's still one valid point missing:
how the f**k should one backup that stuff???
bye
[l]
I already placed an order for NWN with tuxgames...
grah
there's a good opportunity in the KDE 2 to KDE 3 transition to completely rework the KDE theming system
Oh no, not again!! The Themes engine WAS completely rewritten during the 1.x->2.0 transition... that was ugly enough...
