http://www.aclu.org/congress/t091798a.html provides great information and testimony against a national ID system. This is from 1998, and this has been going on for some time.
If you're looking for more information, you can just go to aclu.org and search for "national id" you'll find plenty of information about why they are a very bad idea....
you don't need a social security card or number to live in the united states. You just need one to have a job/pay taxes/get social security. But you could live without one.
Am I the only one who finds it mathematically impossible to have a back door with public key encryption? There is no "magic key" which will decrypt everything that is generated by these functions. If that were the case, they would be useless!!
I bet the entire NSA would laugh their asses off if someone came in and asked them to develop an encryption algorithm with a backdoor. As far as I'm concerned, we don't have much to worry about.
Sounds like democracy in Ancient Greece, the "people" who got to vote were the educated and land owners, etc. Makes more sense, but then again, how can you exclude? And who decides who is educated?
Egyptians are pretty darn close to being Arabs if they aren't already. They do speak Arabic there.. I guess we don't want to encourage people to walk in the manner that people etched into the walls of ancient Egypt do, then they might become a terrorist. </SARCASM>

I'm pretty sure on CNN or other news station I heard/read that they were designed to withstand a hit from a 707 (not accounting for all the fire, etc.). Of course, a 707 is significantly smaller than a 757 or 767, and momentum, fuel, etc. all make a differnce.
Businesses, schools, etc. are closing down all over the world in reverence to these events, some as precautionary efforts, but mostly in reverence. The same way many places closed for the Challenger disaster, etc.
I was moderating this article, but I couldn't help but respond to this.
Christianity and science cannot co-exist. Christianity is fundamentally anti-intellectual and anti-science because instead of the nature it worships some never-seen-never-heard-about god.
Maybe the church back when it ran the entire country, and its political power was threatened by scientific discovery was anti-science. (Let's say back in the day of Galileo). That church was anti-science, and they believed that the only things that were true were in the Bible, and science was useless.
You will now find that most churches and denominations work hand in hand with science. Galileo was still a christian, he just basically got kicked out of the church, but he understood why they were doing it.

One final comment... drunk driving sucks. Losing privacy sucks. If there is an effective way to stop drunk driving w/o invading privacy, I'm all for it. I don't think the technology proposed in this article is what we are looking for, but it is a start. Maybe a device in the car, which when it is 100% certain you are loaded, it will disable the ignition. And it doesn't have to let anyone know about it. Heck if I know how that would work, but I wouldn't say it is impossible to have it work flawlessly.
I worked in an automotive factory for 90 days this summer, and I can tell you that on anything important, and even unimportant, the people doing the real work do not cut corners (even on things you can't see), because they have a true sense of value and pride in their work. Even if all they do is put 5 bolts on the vehicle somewhere, or maybe just put some brackets on the back of the instrumental panel (which you would never see, nor know if it wasn't done properly), they all take care to make sure their job is done perfectly, and there are many people making sure that they do.
If you want to see true quality, go to a automotive assembly plant in the United States (I can't speak for other countries, never been there) that is ISO 9000/9001 certified, and then you will see how much more quality assurance goes into the car you drive than the software you use.
But I certaintly would not say that MOST of any profession are trying to cut corners and sham you. Believe it or not, most people would rather do a good job and have a good product in the end, then leave a customer with shoddy work and make an extra buck.

(i.e.) I think a Porsche would be beautiful in my garage, but that doesn't mean a Porsche is a work of art.
I suppose if you were going to compare coding with art (literature), coding would be non-fiction. Some of it is horribly written, but it's got all the facts right. Some of it is written wrong and doesn't make any sense. While the truly good works of non-fiction, even though they are only telling you facts, are beautiful, fill your mind and heart with thoughts and feelings, and are 100% accurate at the same time.
In that sense, yes it is art, and like with a non-fiction book, you can copyright the finished product, but you can't copyright the facts that make it up.
There are alot of schools already in session, this may account for why the server is down. A couple thousand students thinking "Hey, I've got good bandwidth" trying to get it all at once.
Maybe you should read the review Katz did. He clearly says that Gus Van Sant directed Good Will Hunting and not J&SBSB. Do you read inside parentheses?
Scary Movie isn't worthy of being considered a parody, it just took scenes from other movies and redid them, shitty-style. It isn't even worthy of being in the same sentence as Naked Gun. Leslie Nelson and Mel Brooks have done great parodies. Scary Movie was not a parody. I just say Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and while it parodied better than Scary Movie, I wouldn't really call it a parody either. Ah, I'm just being picky. Mostly, I hate seeing good movies and bad movies compared as if they were on the same level!
definition 1.a is the one most commonly used. Dogma is an opinion someone holds so strongly that they refuse to consider the possibility that their opinion might be wrong.
For instance, if I tell you that what you say looks like red, is really the color blue, you would be dogmatic in your belief that it is red, because you probably argue it with me forever, since it would be impossible for you to believe that it is blue.
Dogma has nothing to do with religion, it is just alot of people tend be dogmatic with their religious beliefs. It is also does not usually refer to something someone was told to believe without reason.
Actually, while General Motors and other auto companies are required to abide by safety regulations; government regulation can also cause problems. The government wanted to force auto companies to reach certain mileage standards in cars by 2004. Because of the stringent nature of these standards, the only feasible way for any automobile company to meet them would be to make the cars lighter, and the engines smaller, etc. Thus, less safe, and less saleable. Luckily, that bill was shot down, and now the automotive industry will be able to devote its time on initiatives already in place such as hybrid/electric motor vehicles, fuel cell technology, etc.
Government regulation would have put all of those on hold.
Do you really trust the same government to control the software industry? Then you will subscription based software usage, you will have the DMCA ruling your ass, and there will be no ftp or other such protocols.
I find it amusing how alot of people here seem to think that it is okay to regulate Microsoft, but when it comes to something like the DMCA they are full balls against it. Go figure.
I've been at one end of this situation before, and as far as I remember, if you make a statement that is threatening to another person; regardless of whether or not it was in jest; if the other person feels threatened by it, or feels that their life is truly in danger, it is just as much of a crime as it is if you were dead serious.
So, just because he was joking, doesn't matter at all. The main question is whether or not the other people were truly afraid of what was said, or if they laughed the first time they read it too.
So uhm... to the person who said they were going to kill everyone on/. with phasers and photon torpedos; I'm assuming you're from a distant planet, and therefore I am fearing for my life. But since you aren't from the US, and probably are not in the US, we can't do much about it...
I was thinking along the same lines. Most car stereos that come with cars are built by the company (or by a company owned by the car manufacturer). Do people complain because their new Camaro or whatever didn't come with a pioneer system, and that the manufacturer installed some other cd player that is a bitch and a half to take out and put a new one in? Would we be better off if cars came without stereos? That certainly doesn't make the car manufacturer monopolistic.
Another thing that bugs me is that everyone keeps throwing the word "monopoly" around. For the uninformed:
1. The exclusive power, or privilege of selling a commodity;
the exclusive power, right, or privilege of dealing in
some article, or of trading in some market; sole command
of the traffic in anything, however obtained; as, the
proprietor of a patented article is given a monopoly of
its sale for a limited time; chartered trading companies
have sometimes had a monopoly of trade with remote
regions; a combination of traders may get a monopoly of a
particular product.
Is microsoft the only seller of Operating Systems? Does MS own manufacturers of PCs and other systems and put all its other products on them? Microsoft is no more a monopoly than any other company with a strong presence in their marketplace. Success != Monopoly. Get it straight folks. Just because a company is successful and has a greater percentage of the market share than everyone else does not make them a monopoly. Is GM a monopoly of the automotive industry because they sell more cars in the US than any other carmaker? No. Actually, the autoindustry is more of an oligopoly I believe, but that's something completely different.
Bradbury swears it off as a coincidence! But how do we know for sure...?
What do you mean he swears it off? He says specifically in a preface or something in one of the books I read where he talked about writing the book, and how hard it was with little money, and that he couldn't think of names for characters, and just happened to be using a Fabercastle (i think that's it) pencil and Montag paper. Ray Bradbury right out said that's where the names came from.
If you're looking for more information, you can just go to aclu.org and search for "national id" you'll find plenty of information about why they are a very bad idea....
