Microsoft seems to understand that complications at installation time (dual booting? preserving an existing data partition?) can sour one's experience pretty thoroughly.

That's how we make Linux take over the desktop! Erase all partitions, and always use the whole hard disk! None of this "Mount / on target partition" business! Just wipe out Windows when Linux installs! Clearly, that's the remedy suggested here.

Except for the part where, y'know, not being able to dual-boot would actually kind of suck. I still need to play Touhou Project outside of school.

But that's really the only reason I keep Windows around (Touhou does not run perfectly in Wine, in my experience). If I didn't need the games, I would destroy that partition.

I'm sure there are other good reasons to dual-boot, too. Like, maybe you want a DEB-based system and a RPM-based system or something, right? Debian and Fedora, side-by-side? That doesn't sound useful? What if a binary is only available in one format and not the other? More reason to dual-boot than just "I need Windows for this one specific task."

M$ should be worried when FOSS can produce this grade of product

Agreed. Very much agreed. Last week, a friend of mine caught Conficker on his XP laptop. He had me wipe the hard disk and install Kubuntu 8.04.2. I showed him what I did, so that he would know how to do it. I have been showing him the basics of functioning in his new OS.

And I really think that, after overcoming a few differences, he'll be back to his old level of functionality (writing school papers, browsing Internet, playing media) in no time. I'll be there to get him going, and then we can learn our new environment together.

I just dual-booted my laptop for the first time around the beginning of the year. So far, my Linux experience (starting with Ubuntu 8.04.1) have been very, very positive. It really feels like it can replace Microsoft Windows for day-to-day use. In fact, that's part of the reason we used a Linux-based OS to fix my friend's laptop - it was quick, easy, and provides 95% of the same functionality, plus some nice features not found in Microsoft Windows (like the Package Manager). Easier than pirating a Windows ISO to replace his infected installation.

[Linux] has the same flaw as Macintosh OS (tends to be ignored by software vendors), but far far worse.

Can you please explain to me how this is a flaw in Linux/Macintosh and not a flaw in the software vendors? How is it the fault of Linux/Macintosh if developers choose not to develop for those platforms? Is it because Linux/Mac haven't grabbed a proportion of the market share to rival that of MS Windows? Is it because Linux/Mac platforms are any harder to develop for?

I honestly don't see how this is the fault of Linux or Macintosh. Please explain?

This Lent (2009), I gave up Mountain Dew. I was drinking 40 FL oz. per day of the stuff, which totaled to almost 200 mg/day of caffeine. I always hated weekends, because I couldn't get enough caffeine/sugar during those two days between Friday and Monday. I decided to break out of this.

I replaced my Mountain Dew consumption with bottled green tea. Felt great. Healthier drink in general, and less caffeine, and I felt great about it.

I picked up a bottle of Mt. Dew and a bottle of green tea one day in the school cafeteria, and looked at the nutrition stuff on the labels. The Mt. Dew had literally three times the caffeine of the green tea! I was disgusted. I'm not drinking that much Mt. Dew that often ever again. That much caffeine is a luxury, to be enjoyed on occasion.

Also, I have anxiety issues. This is also better for me in that respect.

I feel a lot better about myself in general now. I highly advise reducing caffeine consumption to about 100 mg/day or less, like I have now. That's tolerable by the body if you go a few days without it.

Win7 = Vista, plus a pretty skin and a service pack. Therefore, Windows 7 will probably be faster and more stable than Vista.

I think I saw a /. story one day where it was something like where the EULA appeared or something that determined legal enforceability. Man, I wish I wasn't too lazy to look this one up....

Anyway, I'm pretty sure you have the opportunity to freely read and freely agree to Chrome's EULA before you do anything with Google (other than visit their domain in your web browser of choice). Seems like this would not be, by any means, filtering without the user's consent.
