No one else has access to thier browser NOR THE WINDOWS DESKTOP!!! Thats the whole point they control everything, and use that control to force themselves on everyone. Thats what a monopoly is. This would be no issue if they controlled only 30% of desktop OS instead of 97%.
1980: Should'nt ATT be able to do whatever they want, after all they control 95% of all long distance and land lines in US?
I've been writing software that looks at a login, takes that info looks up corresponding data in a database and then generates the HTML to display. Been doing it since '95. PRIOR ART......................
Look all they are really talking about is including the bios in the OS. If it's built into windows then it can be build into linux and bsd.
Think about one of the big backers of linux right now, you know IBM. They still make Bios, we have a bunch of IBM Net Vista's at work, with GASP IBM BIOS. It would'nt be hard for IBM to come up with a generic version if thier BIOS and donate it to linux, just think of everything else they've thrown into linux. Im sure they will have 2 flavors one with DRM for those manufacters that want to include DRM and one that doesn't have it.
This is just hastening the demise of Windows as the pre-eminent desktop. OS
Linux is pretty central to the whole GPL open source movement. There are ALOT of GPL'd software out there, but, Linux is the pre-eminent one. Anything that directly affects Linux directly effects this community, hence it is worthy of coverage.
That being said though, maybe we need a alternate site like. ms_sucks.slashdot.org, where all the ms bashing articles can reside. I mean we know windoze sucks, is buggy and has all the security of a bank vault with a screen door.
Of why business is leaving california faster than ever. If they keep this up CA will become just a bunch of Hollywood Stars and some farms and vineyards in the valley........
Look If they lied to these folks that violates a least a couple of SEC rules. Also, in one phase of discovery IBM has asked for the list of company (SCO) officers that have been dumping stock. IBM also timed thier counter suit with red-hat to coincide with the SEC quarterly dead period, so they could'nt dump more stock for a day or 2. It appears Darl Mcbride and Co have been trying artifically pump up Co stock prices, to then sell thier's at a nice little profit.
Unfortunately this too is illegal. SCO's problems with IBM will pale in comparison to problems they are about to have, namely folks from the US marshals service breaking down doors and (with a search warrant) and hauling off files for SEC to review before filing charges.
The end may be near for SCO, and it will probably be alot more unpleasant than any of us could've hoped for.
Look some companies have tried to sell linux games, but no one bought them! They sold a bunch of the windows version though. I like open source, alot, but open source folks have to realize that alot of companies make money from SELLING SOFTWARE! We can't have everything for free.
Instead of signing a petition, wait till a company comes out with a linux game, and BUY it, buy 2 or 3 for your friends. Thats how we will get good games on linux.
I think if we as a group are trying to read some great plan into what SCO does we'll all go nuts. They are grasping a straws, hoping to find something, anything that will help them. It this get thrown out, they'll come up with some other stupid petition for the court until the judge tells them to stop.
Sadly, I saw an article in PC magazine (Ziff-Davis Trash) and the columnist was just gushing over some 'Proof' that chris sontag from SCO had shown him that yes Unix source was in linux. The guy wouldn't know a strcpy from an sprintf, but he thought this was 'powerful evidence'. If it was there, it was probably from SCO when they were caldera. Oh well theres Lies, damn lies, statistics and then the ranting of brain dead computer columnists....................
I've seen the same thing. If you have really simple stuff, you can do it. Anything larger and we basically had to rewrite it. This has happened on 3 projects now. According to managment there will not be a 4th.
It wasn't just bad, it was even unreadable in places.
Just my 2cents worth, go ahead and mod me down for being redundant........
Geez I must have missed the Manhattan project ( remeber nuclear energy), all the money spent on Fusion research, Not to mention virtually every avaition advance has started as a military application pushed by someone's govt. The entire Space race started as a political thing.......
Mention one adance over the last 100 years that hasn't been brought about by someone's gov't, not neccessarily the us congress. They have had thier share though.
IN the usa it's already happening, unemployment insurance here pays far below the poverty level in terms of money, and after 6 months it goes bye bye whether you have a new job or not. BUT you can't apply for welfare because you did have decent job in the last 24 months, so you have to lose everything before you can get any help.
I got laid off in early 2002 and it took eight months to find a job, and the job was clear across the country, so yes, folks could lose thier house, and end up homeless or living in a shelter. If you have children, you can't just say 'son I don't agree with my companies polices, so we will be living under a bridge for awhile'.
If SCO employees started looking for a job in April or May, chances are they won't find a new one somewhere else for a while. 422000 jobs were cut last month.
In fact all idiots like damage studios are doing is making it harder for folks from SCO to leave.
Yes when people don't make money they starve.
Damage needs to change thier name to Brain damage studios. because doing crap like this shows me they won't be around very long.
If we were in the height of the dotcom bubble sure. You could put out a resume on monday and have a new job by wednesday. Thats not the case now. ALOT of techical folks out there have been out of work for months or even years (1+ to 2+). If you have a family to support you can't just quit because your company does something you don't like. Now if they are doing something illegal, just up and quitting might be an option.
Not hiring some programmer because they work at SCO is plain stupid. To be quite honest this guys website sucked and working for his company probably sucks too if they have this mentality.
Certainly I could see not hiring someone like a Darl McBride from SCO, but dumping on some poor C++ programmer trying to make a living. Give me a physcial break.
I've been saying this for a while and people look at me like I have a green mustache.
The jobs get outsourced to Indian Consulants, but the end result in products or whatever is still sold here for the same amount, only with a much higher profit. BUT, here's the rub, we have Americans making less so they can't afford to buy a bunch of overpriced american goods any more. A bunch of Indian programers and accountants making $6000 a year aren't going to be lining up to $1500 Amana Fridges, $30000+ ford SUVs or $20 brittany spears cds. Except the CEO's still want to make thier 20 million a year salaries. There will be massive defaltion, something has to give. The CEO's want to make all the money, only problem if they have all the money and they aren't paying US and they aren't paying the Indians a whole lot, no one has the money to buy thier stuff.
If things get bad enough Congress WILL enact those tarrifs, they will do all the things the author said they should'nt, because thats thier job. Eventually we will have socailst style gov't where everything is regulated ( all those regs require gov't employees to do the watching).
I don't like it but the every greedy CEOs, CFOs, CIOs..... etc will take us there. They can never pay little guys to little and they can never pay the CEO's to much.
Yes my experince has been *nix (solaris, Linux, HP UX....) BUT the point is STILL, that Windows IS NOT a defacto standard, especally when you are talking Industrial Strength Infrastructure. In fact in that environment variants of Unix are just as prevelant as variants windows (2000, XP, NT......). Probably more so.
Also Given the size of these corporate networks, they dwarf smaller networks. Granted smaller networks tend to be MS. Also the size of the machines as well, Yes a Sun box with 150 CPUs is one server, but how many dual xeons would need to replace it? (75???)
"Just because your shop does, doesn't mean that there aren't shops out there, that have corporate environment applications which deploy with Windows Server ( in one form or another running some sort of another of a database ) on the backend...."
A Defacto standard would mean Very nearly everyone used it.
That was my point:
WINDOWS SERVER IS NO WHERE NEAR DEFACTO, PROBABLY NOT EVEN 50%......
Now where are my matter/antimatter generator, warp coils and transporter????????????????????????
Sh*t head liberals believe in freedom of expression, but only for those people that express the same thoughts as they do.......
I've been writing software that looks at a login, takes that info looks up corresponding data in a database and then generates the HTML to display. Been doing it since '95. PRIOR ART......................
I've done it in C++, Java and PHP........
Except I try not to use cookies......

"In other words, innocent until proven guilty"
I think you mean guilty until proven innocent. I'm really suprised, usually courts throw out these type of rules since they violate equal protection.
Linux is pretty central to the whole GPL open source movement. There are ALOT of GPL'd software out there, but, Linux is the pre-eminent one. Anything that directly affects Linux directly effects this community, hence it is worthy of coverage.

the prestigious recruitment co of :

They've always represented thier own interests very well.

I'll have you know viagra reseach was almost single handedly brought about by Jesse Helms and
Strom Thurmond
Whats the use in having all that power and interns if you can't get it up??????
I've seen the same thing. If you have really simple stuff, you can do it. Anything larger and we basically had to rewrite it. This has happened on 3 projects now. According to managment there will not be a 4th.

So yes alot of folks are really pissed.
I got laid off in early 2002 and it took eight months to find a job, and the job was clear across the country, so yes, folks could lose thier house, and end up homeless or living in a shelter. You know, If we could just M$ to act as stupidly as the RIAA and SCO, the world would be a better place.
I've been saying this for a while and people look at me like I have a green mustache.

Yes my experince has been *nix (solaris, Linux, HP UX

No these were all Fortune 500 companies actually making money AND profits.....
The smallest had a gross revenue of 3 Billion ( thats of course gross, not profit).
