Thanks for reminding me that iuma.com got sold out. Before napster, mp3, and all that crap, Internet Underground Music Archive was the ultimate resource for finding independent music online.

But that was so long ago that, at that time, ubl.com was actually useful too.

Clearly you don't meet this criteria, so don't worry about it.

Personally, I think its unfortunate most people don't see it this way - its the reason great companies with great products get gobbled / trampled by the Wal-Marts, Microsofts, and Sony's of the world. Economic darwinism (the idea that if a company fails, they must've had an inferior product) is a complete crock of shit, and leads giant uncontrollable monsters like the RIAA et al.

Sure, someone's doing well - the LEC's. Its their obscene fees that keep anyone but them from providing affordable broadband. DSL should be affordable - cable just has too high of a rollout cost, and too many points of failure. But since the FCC has pretty much decided to just ignore the laws mandating local competetion, there's little that can be done.

Other than giving your location-mandated baby Bell even more money for shitty customer service and outdated equipment.

I couldn't agree more. Sony my have been good 20 years ago (my original Discman, for example, was a freakin' tank), but everything they've made in the last 15 years is utter crap. I mean honestly - how many people do you know that had a PSOne last them longer than two years?

    Anyone?

    Thought not : )

That's exactly why I won't buy I PS2 - I don't trust anyone who actually makes a profit on their console - they've got a vested interest in in failing.

I hate disney and the oscars as much as anything, this really has the potential to legitmize anime as being more than Squaresoft fanboy fodder. Honestly, I don't think any other distributor could've brought this fantastic, fantastic movies to as many screens. Both times I saw this in the theater, it was packed with families, something I've never, ever seen at an anime screening.

If this does well, maybe we'll finally get to see that Cowboy Bebop movie on the big screen after all.

  9. Thank god it is legal to "price dump" on Microsoft Loses $177m on Xbox in Three Months · · Score: 5, Insightful

Otherwise Sony (being the only vertically integrated of the three companies) would be the only one able to sell their console at a low price.

Look, I hate MS as much as anyone, but romaticizing Sony or Nintendo as good guys is a pretty biased view.

If people really cared about the good guys winning the console war, people would've bought more Dreamcasts. Since they didn't win, you just have to go on which one has the games you want.

Besides, we're not talking about Wal-Mart selling drugs below cost to drive the local competition out of business; we're talking about a "give the razor, sell the blades" pricing model here.

    There's a world of difference.

To be fair, music isn't a science, music is an aesthetic experience. Perhaps I just find it aesthetically pleasing.

Or, it could be that the effectively infinite sampling rate lends itself well to short-wavelength sounds, giving vinyl a harmonic "richness" that I just don't hear in cd.

Or maybe I'm just blowing smoke up your ass.

  13. Re:Who needs another disk player on New Audio Disc Formats and Copyrights · · Score: 3, Insightful

Then clearly this format isn't targeted at you, so don't bother. Since SACD's play on regular cd players, I imagine it would be pretty easy to rip them from the stereo 44k 16bit layer and compress it until it sounds like it was recorded on a microcassette.

The target audience here, for now anyway, is clearly audiophiles and people who want to use their 5-speaker home theater setup for music as well. Unfortunately, they're going to alienate both of these audiences by refusing to add digital output.

Me, I'll stick with vinyl. It's cheap enough that I don't mind paying for the product, sounds better than cd, and has a tactility that can't be argued with.

  18. Re:Jesus H. Christo! Two things.... on Singing Cow To Attack CBDTPA · · Score: 1

Obviously they've decided its a lot cheaper to just make somebody else pay to implement this (impossible to implement) bill. Think about it, all of the costs go to the manufacturers, as well as all of the liability.

Either that, or maybe they have some dvd-like "secure" medium already in development. It'd be just with dvd, except that this bill would mandate this as the de facto standard - suddenly even non-RIAA artists would have to give royalty kickbacks to the RIAA for using their platform, just like independent films must with the MPAA for dvd.

I also have to wonder if this would help the RIAA write off their fictionalized "losses" from piracy. Where do they get these ridiculous numbers from, anyway? (Number-of-MP3s-downloaded-each-year + Number-of-blank-cds-sold-each-year) * $18.95 = net-losses-due-to-piracy

(Its almost as bad as the companies that claim hundreds of millions of dollars in losses from a web defacement - how much do they pay the guy per hour who has to restore their backup image from the tape drive???)

  19. Re:Once Again the Lesson on PS2 Vs. X-Box: Winner Emerging? · · Score: 1

I'm not sure what the lesson would be here. I mean, when you look at the history of consoles I don't think anybody's ever managed a successful follow-up:
Atari 2600 - huge; Atari 5200 - they sold 3, and I think they were to Mr. Atari's mom
Original NES - huge; SNES - not a *failure*, exactly, but no where near as big as...
Sega Genesis - bigger than Jesus, if Jesus was a cartridge-based video game console; Sega Saturn - superior in every way, but failed (hmm... it even looked a lot like the x-box, didn't it?)

Now, when you look at Sony and Nintendo (in the handheld market) actually managing to maintain their dominance (despite never having the most "cutting-edge" technology), maybe the lesson is that the market is changing. Or maybe it's splintering. I personally lost all faith when the Dreamcast failed, & Sega pulled out of the market. I've yet to see anything on the PS2 that really blows the DC out of the real-time-rendered water...

  20. i'm so disappointed... on What Audio System Powers Your Home Theater? · · Score: 1

...to see bose and sony taken seriously on slashdot - c'mon kids, they're the respective compaq and microsoft of the stereo industry - all you're paying for when you buy their stuff is an (apparently effective) advertising campaign.

now, as far as getting the best performance, you should return that dvd(tm) player and exchange it for one that has a coaxial digital output. i'm guessing that by optical output you mean that it has a toslink(tm) output; most toslink fiber optic cables are made of plastic instead of glass, and they introduce a ton of jitter (pcm timing shifts), which makes it sound like ass on a stick. so unless you're willing to spend $100+ for a glass toslink cable, go with coax.

otherwise, for receivers, make sure the thing weighs a lot. it sounds wierd, but the most common area that receiver manufacturers scimp on (ahem, sonypioneeraiwakenwoodharmon) is the transformers, and since there's (supposed to be) 5 separate amplifiers inside the thing, it needs to be able to have a lot of power in reserve. this'll work as a good test until they start putting lead weights in their recievers like apple used to with the apple i.

anyway, brands that are built well: marantz, paradigm, b&k, nht, mission, vanderstein, and i guess b&w (i don't like them, but they are built well.)

and, no matter what, do not buy any thing at worst lie i mean best buy. nothing they have is good; even their yamaha stuff (normally really good) is worse than the yamaha stuff they sell at specialty stores.
