It *was* a press release. It said that in big, bold letters at the top of the page. It doesn't get much more press release-esque than a press release.
Regarding your comments about it failing on the Xbox, it certainly won't look as good as the PC version - the Xbox GPU doesn't support shaders, so they're probably redoing a lot of the lighting in texture work. The realtime lighting is the thing that makes Doom such a dog, I'm sure once that's stripped out, it should run pretty well.
Just in case you weren't aware of it, there's a fan-made mod for the SS2 that that will improve the 3d models from ridiculously dated to only slightly dated.
Seriously, you're about as on-topic as the submitter's comment about the patent system. It's like seeing a story about case modding and saying, "OMG why are people spending effort on case modding when I still don't have holographic displays on my computer?!?"
I'm guessing you saw the "ultra contrast (black and white)" and decided to post a furiously 3dgy comment rather than to keep reading the page. While I agree this unit looks useless, it is useless and color.
If you're willing to concede that tube guitar amps are sonically superior, why is it such a stretch that works better for audio playback? Have you ever even listened to playback on a tube system?
It's not superstition; it's aesthetics. If you really think art can be quantified and calculated, why did you even bother to learn how to play guitar? Certainly a computer can play it better than you.
To their credit, Target not only had the DVD's in their add, they had them prominently located and on sale for $35 dollars.
I rewarded them with my money, and got dvd's in return!
On an side note, these DVD's are everything I'd hoped for. Quality extras, the 3 unaired episodes are exquisite (particularly "The Message"), and the packaging is top-notch.
...did you even click the link, or did you just look sternly at it and decide to make an angry post?

My girlfriend, a complete neophyte to Mozilla (I had her switch from IE recently) loves the Mozilla lizard, and finds him adorable. Frankly, so do I. I was sad when Firebird stopped using the icon (for selfish reasons, mostly stemming from the fact that their new icon blows.)
Therefore I generalize from my single anecdotal example that you are correct sir. It is sufficient and recognizable. I've recognized the mozilla shirts from half a mile away.
...is that the band usually ends up footing the bill for the studio time. So ultimately, all this leads to is the band being out less money to start out. This doesn't affect the studio because honestly, the studio doesn't pay for it, your studio time comes out of your advance.
It gets posted here all the time, but Steve Albini has a great article about the economics of recording that's worth a read.
I also have to wonder if one of the big reasons behind the decrease in recording costs has to do with the rise of hiphop. An average hiphop record can be recorded in just a few days (you have no live musicians to track) whereas even a really productive, organized band (if such a thing exists;) will spend a minimum of 3 or 4 weeks in the studio tracking and mixing.
Check out the Aiptek website, they have a solid state DV with a nice little lcd for cheap; it can take a 512MB CF card, iirc.
If you go to their store, they have them refurbished for about a hundred bucks. I've had really good luck with their Pencam 1.3SD; its not the highest quality gadget ever made, but their stuff is soooo cheap.
Of course, the real catch is that not only do they get your address, etc (and credit card # if you used one at the store), they get your bank account # when you cash the check.
Generally I avoid them, although I will admit I got suckered into the same CDR deal : P
Yeah, its pretty infuriating that there isn't going to be a viable alternative to the Real streams available on most of the NPR affiliate sites; its pretty infuriating.
Does anyone know what the terms are with this? Does Real just give the software to NPR for advertising purposes? To be fair, its the only reason I have Real installed on my box at all.
Props to the poster for the Barcelona reference, btw.
While their sub has a lot of gee-whiz cool to it (a 12" cube! that's so cool!) they're amps and preamps, imho, are mediocre, considering what they cost. If you're looking for high-end home theater amps / preamps, look no further than B&K. If you're looking for just a high-end audio system, for the same price as the Sunfire stuff, you could get yourself into some entry-level Audio Research and Conrad-Johson eletronics.
But I've never been a fan of that all-flash, no substance Carver / Sunfire sound. To each his or her own.
There's actually a fantastic "This American Life" that starts off with an interview with Clinton's Chief of Staff (John Podesta) talking about how different Bush's administration has been with regards to declassification of documents.
The rest of it is abut exactly the kind of unscrupulous stuff you're talking about; its absolutely fascinating.

Here's a question born out of my own ignorance of how this works, but if you used a connectionless protocol would the monitoring system still work? Like, let's say I have a computer in my dorm, and NFS mount a box outside the network and bringing in massive amounts of data. Would it still show?
They tried doing something like this with cassettes in the 70's, where you'd have the program on Side A, and then Side B would be left blank and tabbed so you could record whatever you wanted.
IIRC it was a failure because consumers felt like they were getting ripped off, paying for a half-blank cassette.
Or maybe because it was annoying to have to rewind through 45 minutes of dead air to get back to the beginning again.
You think music is homogonized now? Did you notice the quote about there only being 20 professionally produced cd's a year?
Granted, this is an extrememe "worst-case" scenario; I'd really like to see what the music industry in China was like before piracy was rampant, like pre-cd.
Our system is broken, and the RIAA is evil; but this one is worse. The answer isn't to download all those mp3's of the 8 Mile soundtrack, reassuring yourself that it's ok cuz you're sticking it to the man. The point is, fuck Eminem, Brittany, and major label music in general. Expand your tastes and buy something you didn't hear about on the tv. Something local. Something original.
Those are the people getting screwed over, doing what they love and not making millions, making good music no one will ever hear because the singer wasn't in this years big action movie.
And don't forget that Othello-clone 7-UP Spot game (Cool Spot, I think) for the NES. IIRC there was a Noid game as well for the Nintendo. Oh yeah, and that free, send-away kool-aid man Atari 2600 Game. Which, y'know, was pretty gay.
I guess what's different here is that these are free browser games (like all the advergames on zone.com) or free downloads (America's Army, anyone?).
While I've had a lot of messages come back "failed to deliver", I've also had a bunch simply vanish; I wouldn't say 7%, but its probably in the 3-5% range.

Do you people even understand the difference between publishing and developing?
No?
Maybe I should know better than to expect ignorance to be an obstacle to posting on Slashdot.

Yes, it looks really ingenious and all, but can I pop popcorn with it from a range of three miles? Hilarity would be bound to ensue!

As does Extremetech.com - they offer up a pretty in-depth analysis of the issues surrounding the fiasco here.
