    I propose we make the "bio-hackers" job a bit more difficult. a whole-body print is what is needed to deter these thieves. The only drawback that I can envision is lengthly cloaking and uncloaking process. Not to mention a cold scanner will probably keep out of the stores during the winter months.

    In certain venues (such as the Gap and Victorias Secret) it will make waiting in line a bit more rewarding, while people will probably tend to avert their eyes in the local k-mart. Perhaps the blue-light crew can make a bit of money selling ad space on the ceiling.

    Either that or we use retinal scans..... hard to clone eyeballs.

    It's nice to know that sheep-like behavior is apparently universal. Not.

    One the biggest reasons that I've walked away from religion is the absolute intolerance and rabid bigotry shown by nearly every religion. When you add ignorance and xenophobia into the mix, the whole situation is out of control.

    It's amazing how many "one true gods there are" and even more amazing how much evil has been carried out in the name of god.

    There's no easy cure. Challenging peoples core beliefs, no matter how wrongheaded, will usually result in even more unreasonable behavior. People hate being reminded they're fools.

    Communism failed because it requires a perfect world and people within it who are not motivated by greed. Look at every communist or socialist country . In nearly every case you'll find a leadership wholly corrupted by greed and the lust for power. People are people. They're weak and greedy (except for Bill Clinton, of course).

    Capitalism works so well because the world and the people in it are imperfect and incapable (as a whole) of not wanting their own "stuff". In spite of what many people think, the brand of capitalism here in good old US of A, has been heavily watered down by socialism.

    Capitalism is its purest form is darwinian in nature. If you're incapable of cutting the mustard, you starve or (at a minimum) are less likely likely to reproduce. If only it were so. :)

    For a nice easy read, check out "Animal Farm". Honestly, It's not about animals!!! heh.

    Given what Turner Broadcasting said, perhaps they're using this as a way to figure out what you're "stealing", and bill you accordingly. :)

    They could also use the data they're sure to keep to as a way to target ads and to watch viewing patterns.

    Read that user agreement VERY closely, kiddies.

    They've been doing similar things for years with people.

    You can get people to do the craziest things with something called "Religion".

    Similar results have been achieved with colorful bits of paper called "money" and something called "sex" as well.

    I wasn't born with privledge, nor was my family wealthy. I earned my own way. In this country such things are possible and happen every day.

    All that it takes is the will and to refuse to play the victim. With your defeatist attitude, you've lost before you even begin to compete. Don't think like a sheep. Be a wolf. survive. win. sheesh.

    Don't threaten doing a "Alec Balwin" and move away without fighting. At the risk of sounding like a rah-rah flag-waver, this is still the best country on the planet(although there might be an intelligent civilization elsewhere in the galaxy).

    Running away means you're taking yourself out of the fight (sheep-like behavior at best).

    The only way to beat these idiots and corporate whores is to become very vocal and present a well-reasoned arguement against these encroachments.

    If we act like immature jerks, we invalidate our own arguements and give the win to them.

    It's becoming very fashionable to bash Senator Hollings "brain"-child. It's was so outragous a proposal that anything less(no matter how badly it bodes for us) would seem "reasonable" by comparison.

    I wouldn't fear the current legislation, I'd watch out for the seemingly more moderate bills that are sure to follow. If our beloved under-secretary of commerce (or whatever) thinks the DMCA is well-balanced, then we're sure to see more of the same in coming days.

    Be on your toes and don't let down your guard.

    Remember: when they want you to "comprimise" it really means they want you to give up half of what you have. All they need is a few cycles of that, and pretty soon, you have nothing.

    The anti-gun crowd has been using that tact for quite a while and painting those who refuse to play the game as unreasonable. Expect the same treatment.

    They'll get my Linux Distro when they pry it from my cold, dead disk drive!

    I just tried ordering a pair and even had two in my shopping cart at the discounted price and was in the process of checking out when suddenly, my cart emptied itself and you can't get the "good deal" for two. Now they're $15 each and there is NO discount.

    Sheesh!!! Needless to say, I'm not going to order them now. I don't like being jerked around like that!!!

    Even though X86 Solaris isn't that popular (or even that well respected), it can still serve a useful function.

    Until recently, the only access I had to hardware that would run a current version of Solaris was at work.

    I've been using X86 Solaris at home for a few years and it's pretty decent. It doesn't have the following of Linux, but it's still quite solid and for most things you can't tell what hardware is underneath (assuming you do a good job picking decent hardware up front).

    For those people who want to learn Solaris, or for small companies on a budget who want to step up to SPARC hardware later, it can't be beat. Until the recent dot-com blow-up you didn't have access to decent SPARC hardware at a reasonable hardware.

    Given the documented weaknesses in the Passport "scheme", I find it highly unlikely that anyone in their right mind would consider such a move.

    Perhaps it's time to start random drug testing at the White House Staff. Because SOMEONE is clearly smoking something.

    Shhh..... don't tell anyone!! :)

    I like Apache, but never really like using it in a high-demand environment with a database behind it. If the back end server gets a bit sluggish, or the content developers aren't good about writing scalable code, connections begin stacking up and things go downhill quickly from there.

    AOLServer tends to behave a lot better with the added benefit that it's not Netscape Enterprise Server. heh. NES is a nice server, but it's expensive and the innards aren't as well-documented as I'd like.

    Now that Apache is going multi-threaded, it'll be interesting to see how well it scales. Given the large degree of support from the open-source community, Apache 2.x will be well-positioned to take away a lot of business from IIS.

    You're missing the point, professor.

    That used book DID generate royalties for the author on its original sale. The publisher made their money on the sale and perhaps Mr. Bezos made a tiny bit too.

    You can't expect to double and triple dip. It's not fair to the consumer. I suspect that they're not too concerned about that though.

    I'd say we leave well enough alone. It's a USED book, for god's sake. I prefer to buy new, but when books are out of print (or grossly overpriced) it's the only way to get what you want to read.

    If we're to bow to the publishers wishes (and while we're bent over, take it like a good comsumer (now, didn't that feel better?)), who's to get the money?

    The Author? What if they're long dead?

    The publisher? What if they no longer exist?

    What extra burdon are the book stores and on-line merchants going to have to bear?

    They need a few less bored lawyers, I think.

    Does this mean that PHP will soon run correctly under AOLServer?!? PHP Version 4.1.X didn't play nicely before as a plug-in for AOLServer.

    For those who have never heard of AOLServer, it's a very nice (honestly!!), threading, open-source Web Server that runs on *NIX and even some MicroSquish OSs. It has a well-defined C API and uses TCL as the built-in command process language.

    AOLServer scales very well and has good database connectivity too.
