  1. System administrators on A Title To Replace "Systems Administrator"? · · Score: 1

"I'm not talking about users, and I'm not talking about software developers. I am thinking of: system administrators, LAN administrators, network administrators (both kinds!), security administrators, e-mail administrators, desktop support groups, database administrators, and all the other kinds of support that keep the IT function of an institution running"

In my estimation all these are system administrators. My positions as a sys admin have included all of these under one title. I don't see them as seperate occupations.

This points out something I have been coming to realize. There are really only two choices in american governence anymore. They are NOT Republican/ Democrat. It is between freedom and, for lack of a better word, slavery to the state. Both partys are moving to complete governmental control of our lives. They are just heading there via different paths. It's time for those who love freedom to stand up.

Their REAL reason? Why can't you accept that maybe what they said on their faq IS their real reason?

Without commenting on whether this is a good or bad decision by them, or the legality of it, it makes complete sense for blizzard to do what it did. I personally know lots of people who have non-legal copies of the beta, who plan on playing them on rogue servers, without ever purchasing the game. Blizzard doesn't want its games to be pirated, and making sure their games only play on their servers is a way to make this happen.

So whether or not its a good decision, why must you deny that the reason they put on their FAQ is the "real" reason?

  22. Re:Copyright on Recording Artists File Brief Against RIAA · · Score: 1

The problem your argument is that the record companies do provide a very useful service: providing the initial funds for artists to create quality recordings.

In a world without record companies, Joe songwriter writes 5 ingenious, well-composed tunes, and either records them with his home equipment (ending with recordings that most people wouldn't buy due to the low recording quality), or dishes out thousands of dollars to record in a professional studio. If Joe doesn't have these thousands, then his music will never reach the public in a well recorded format.

In order for music to be profitable, it has be a high quality recording. And high quality recordings cost lots of money. And currently, record companies, members of the RIAA, are providing this initial money, to make the music profitable, AND listenable. They are the ones investing heavily in a new artist, so I say much of the profits are due them!

I agree, the RIAA is overly greedy, trying to remove too many of our rights to protect their investments. But the thought of a world without record companies scares me, as the non-wealthy talented songwriter would never be able to make his or her music heard in a reasonable recording.
