  4. Re:Brexit on EU Leader Says English Is Losing Importance (politico.eu) · · Score: 1

Well, Brexit was supposed to be politician vs politician kind of play.
The guy who pushed for referendum didn't seriously consider the lave option to succeed, as it makes no sense whatsoever.
It is a lose-lose for UK, as:

    1) Look at Switzerland, they are not part of EU (no veto or any other rights whatsoever) but they do pay quite a lot for being part of the market
    2) Germany and France were pushing for more federalization and UK was the only major player objecting it, now nothing will stop them
    3) Leaving EU market would harm EU but will be much more harmful for UK

So, UK will either pay the same (if not more, as they had some "discounts" before) and lose veto rights or shoot itself into foot much harder with "hard brexit", which again would play for EU, demonstrating what happens to a country when it does that.

And to the dude speaking, he clearly said "in EU" and he was correct (in many EU countries people speak more than just English, by the way; Spanish doesn't seem to give a flying fuck about any language and as long as tourists go, German's are the most active ones etc etc)
It was also before crucial presidential elections, stroking French nationalism a bit.

    All in all, smart move.

  5. Except many "diversity issues" that are raised in numerous articles, are often not issues at all.
The whole "diversity" concept (in this context "we need 50/50 split in fields where females are underrepresented" is questionable, to say the least, what makes us think that there are no inherent gender differences, that make people prefer one or another profession?

Why doesn't the force that forces females to be underrepresented in math, not work with biology, where they have become majority?
Why does share of girls, given that they do better than boys on average in math, suddenly drop to under a third, if you only check for those with 700 points or higher?

Where are all the female hackers, you know, the self educated locked in the basement nerds who spend days and nights messing with computers?

    I've seen articles on slashdot

  6. Is it that different from being afraid to look like a nerd for boys?

  7. I think there is a problem going both ways.
There is a HUGE bunch of people seeking gender biases, and mind you, only vs certain gender.
There is a HUGE number of articles that results from those effort, and I honestly stopped taking any of them seriously a while ago (pardon my bias).

Now, to the question: how on earth does one determine gender of the author of the code?
And what should we do, if it was actually unknown and code gets rejected because of, you know, some other (you name them) reasons?

  9. The original initiative was about chargers.
European commission ("those useless bureaucrats") notices huge margins on (and lots of waste) generated by mobile phone chargers.

Remember how we got to 64 bit CPUs?
    AMD did AMD64 thing.
Microsoft said "no way I'd support to 64 bit versions" and Intel went with x86-64.

Now, x86-64 and AMD64 were nearly the same, but there still were differences in certain commands, of interest only to operating systems.

Another reason for OS to know exact version of CPU is scheduling tasks effectively. E.g. Ryzen 8 cores are internally 4+4 cores, each 4 with their own L3. Taking that into account can increase performance quite a bit.

At the end of the day, it's no big deal to add support for new CPUs, surely, but Microsoft has decided to use the opportunity and push Win 10 like that.
Neither Ryzen nor Kaby Lake CPU get official support from Microsoft.

But Windows 7 still boots, to my knowledge:
