The latest incarnation of the Sony Reader plugs in to a USB host and shows up like a drive, to drag files over. It can handle .txt and .PDF as well as JPEG and MP3. Feel free to totally ignore installing their software and never using DRM. I have one and it is fantastic for taking with me when I travel.

Eh, you can, but you're going to get the best results regarding display quality (because you can control font and size), as well as not waiting (feels like an eternity) for the reader to format the file itself.

If you do want to just drop books in, at least convert them to Sony's native book format. They really do tend to be better. The tool I use for this purpose is called BookDesigner, and it makes for some very comfortable reading. Still have the formatting wait though.

While I'm at it, PDFrasterfarian can format your PDF files. You can crop the pdfs, force one pdf page to use two frames (thats usually what i go for) portrait or landscape modes, all free stuff. Google should lend you a hand finding these.

for the record, i own one of these, and i absolutely love it. my only real gripe is the lack of backlighting, but i think i might be able to hack something up to make a frontlight that wont send a glare back at me.

It is FAR cheaper to make your own external than to buy one premade by WD or Maxtor, etc. Check newegg, you can buy a OEM hard drive, and a usb2 or firewire external chassis for about the same price as a retail drive at CompUSA or BestBuy.

As a side note, I very much do not trust the shitty drives that come inside premade externals. I've had far better luck buying oem 7200rpm drives with 8mb cache and dropping it inside a chassis. Our shop has seen a good two times more premades die than built, however I cannot say its because theyre shittier, or because the people that build their own take better care of their equipment.

...something that can already be done with Postfix and other mailers. It's very simple. Postfix can check to see if the hostname you claim to be from matches your IP. It can also check to see if the IP reverses to the hostname you claimed(this one is not as wise, as there are perfectly valid reasons for not having a reverse entry, although you -should- have one). Further, Postfix can return not-authorized if you try and give a MAIL FROM address which doesn't match your domain; ie, if you're coming from a01.nastyspammer.com, you're not going to be able to say "MAIL FROM: niceguy@yahoo.com". It is -incredibly- effective against blocking spam, but the problem is that many ISPs and company just don't have properly configured mail servers, or hostnames set up for their mail servers(an even more common mistake is for the hostname to not match the name reported by the connecting server in the HELO command- most often Exchange servers). This would change quickly if more people configured their mail servers to block such shenanigans.

this is stupid. what about email thats sent via my ISPs mail server, but the from address is my own domain? that is perfectly reasonable. you would lose a ton of email filtering like that.
