That's why you need a redudant system: I've thought about making one myself where it monitors not only my blog, but also my Slashdot/K5 accounts (no postings on all 3 in a month? - possibly dead) and maybe ping my home machine (which is usually connected 99.9% of the time) - all come up "no response/updates" for 30 days? Kill everything... Of course, by then, my credit card will probably be blocked by the bank so my hosting company would have k'lined the server anyway so the data would be wiped...I think I've just come across a small flaw(!)
I know our web hosting business has had quite a bit of fraud the past few days which has resulted in me finding a big list of 1,700 anonymous/open proxies and then blacklisting them/their IP addresses. Ok - it won't block every single one, but hopefully it'll block the majority/well known ones.
When I brought my Dell Desktop, I purposly "downgraded" it's spec as it was cheaper to get the "standard RAM" and larger hard drives from a third party retailer.
Download it yourself from suprnova.org using bittorrent. I haven't downloaded KillBill2 myself (so I can't vouch for quality) - mainly as I haven't even seen more than a poster of KillBill_1_ and it just doesn't seem like my kinda film..
Problem is, today's society is just too "safe" that people aren't doing this... However, I propose that we take the Warning/Safety Labels off everything (you know the stupid ones like "Do not iron shirt whilst wearing it") and overtime, the problem should resolve itself.
And probably your credit card details (or bank details off the subscription check). The shock, the horror...
To really freak people out, they should have just sent a card in a plain brown envelope saying "Mr.Jones of XXXX Street, just thought you'd like to be reminded that we know your credit card ends in 09/2004 and starts with the digits XXX" and then, in the magazine (a couple of days later) say "Did you receive a brown envelope?" (just long enough for people to be shocked but not too worried).
.uk domain names allow you to "opt out" of the WHOIS information - however, it's only for "personal usage" domain names. If you use a domain name for commercial purposes, then you aren't allowed to "opt out" and have to have the information displayed. I believe this is due to the way the Data Protection Act here in the UK affects "private individuals" and "trading entities" (but feel free to have a look round http://www.nic.uk yourself)
Yes - monthly passes (season tickets) do exist: but sometimes they can work out more expensive then just buying tickets (I've even had circumstances where buying two single tickets -one each way - was cheaper than buying a return ticket). I know I was travelling 30 miles each way everyday, and it was cheaper for me just to buy a ticket on the day then a season.
We think it's a marvelous idea and use the Ask Live Chat System for a webhosting company and we just need to ensure that at least one member of sales staff is logged in all day - we only tend to "prompt" visitors if they have been on a page/the site for a long period of time (say 5 minutes on a single page: obviously they haven't found quite what they are looking for, so somebody can help and answer any questions they may have).
Same here - I don't see why these live chat services need Java, Flash etc - when just plain HTML (with maybe just a little bit of Javascript) does the same job and with a lot less "stress" for potential customers: the Asklive chat system we use is all just HTML.
Same here, I do most of my shopping online and would love to be able to ask someone "You haven't got product X in stock - but if I order it now, can you get in within a fortnight" and know within a few minutes if I have to continue searching or not: saves having either going to their store, calling on the telephone or waiting for a response for an email. I know the questions we get asked through our live chat service are of the sort "How quickly are orders dealt with? Can you confirm the price" etc and it's really boosted our sales.
We use a system called Ask Live for hosting sales, but don't use it for technical support: we've found people want an answer via Ask Live straight away which isn't possible for most tech support issues.
I actually got that MP3, converted it to WAV, moved it to my SonyEricsson P800 cellphone and set it to play the WAV every time a text/SMS message came in (and all the servers are configured to send me a quick message if they have a problem). I didn't even have to look at my phone - "Ah - the system, the system, the system is down";)
Same here - I hate the fact I've got to be at work for 9am (even though I get out of bed at 8.30am) because I hate mornings. I stop getting paid at 5.30pm ("end of the day"), but I'm usually there until 7pm (sometimes, like tonight, 9pm). I enjoy it - apart from the mornings.
Welcome to 20 minutes in to the future.
(Max Headroom reference: basically MH is set in the near future where it's illegal to turn off your television set, elections are run for and controlled by the television networks and there's this nifty 'not really' computer generated TV presenter).
Bring on the Blipverts!
(BTW: Max Headroom can be downloaded, along with MST3K episodes from DAPCentral)
I just install UnixUtils (and then enable "Tab Completion" in the Windows registry). Only problem is, after installing MySQL, PHP, Perl and Apache (with UnixUtils) on a Windows box, I can often forget which platform that "black box on the desktop" relates to (if it's a Windows command shell or a remote Linux server).
Use aluminum foil instead. It's a radiant barrier, and properly grounded, can also make a Faraday cage or wikipedia link out of your house
But why would I want to make a Wikipedia link out of my house?

I'm sure many of us have had a problem (and please, let's not list them on/.) that either baffled a doctor or a series of doctors; perhaps some issues remain unresolved
I know a member of my family was gettin gill and our doctor didn't know what the cause was. Then we looked up the symptoms on the internet and went back to the Doctor and said "Is it possible it could be condition X?" (where condition X is reasonably rare: around 2,000 people have it in the UK IIRC: hence it's very unlikely a doctor would have actually seen a case). The Doc said "Maybe - let me check", referred the family member to a specialist and the diagnostics was confirmed.
A bit like how Compaq (was it?) reverse engineered IBM's original PC BIOS system. One set of programmers examined the core dumps/code on the chip, wrote out the specification and then passed it to a totally seperate group of programmers which re-wrote the BIOS. No chance of "code contaimination", but the same outcome.
servants!=slaves.
You pay servants (such as butlers, maids etc) whereas you "own" slaves.
Fine point, but it had to be made. Well, it didn't - but having a "sex servant" doesn't sound as cool as having a "sex slave" does it? (a sex servant would just be a prostitute)
RFID readers either side of the finish line probably: when the RFID "reads" closest to the "over the line" reader then the "start of the line" reader then deem the tag as being at least half-way over (ok, some variation can be accounted for height about the line - but tags either side of the line should eliminate this to a very very very small margin).

True, don't you just hate it when companies register trademarks - first Microsoft, now NetBSD - next you'll know Linux will become "evil". Oh, wait...
I like the joke/play on words (GIMP their gimp), but I don't quite get the PacMan sound effects at the end...
