But why would one change to use Google's DNS? If you're technical enough and care about such, you're way better off setting up your own recursive DNS server.

Google is just datamining from DNS requests here, it's another source of information. At least with your own ISP you can reasonably think that theres no datamining going on (excluding US ISP's, of course, who serve ads on non-existing domains for their users anyway)

I don't know which Linux distros your're referring to, but if you mean Ubuntu, yes, it has a release schedule of approximately every six months, but each release is supported for 18 months.

And Windows versions generally have support for 5-8 years, which is a lot more than 18 months.

Even if we take into account the distro's that make a major release every 1-2 years, Windows is still behind it. I was happy with XP for years. Now I'm using Vista and I'm happy with it too. I didn't jump on it first, so maybe they have improved it past the launch. But generally major Windows releases are a lot more polished than with Linux distro's.

I'd think that constantly creating new versions of windows to create an income stream is getting
ridiculous now. What can Windows 8 do that can't be done with Windows 7? I guess the trend may be
that the consumer/customer will update on every 2nd or 3rd windows version that comes out instead
of every year. The same goes for the browsers and office too. I think that it should be v7.1 and v7.2
etc to add additional functionalities for free vs. buying functionalities in increments. Also just
changing the GUI interface to look new improved shouldn't count either.

The only new version that should come out that would drastically be new that one can purchase
is the artificial intelligence version. That is, one that can improve itself!

Tell that to most of the linux distros, who have a written rule to release new major version every 6 months.

And why should everything involving computers be free? Yeah, we've got used to that by the availability of warez and so on. But it really is not good. Developers really need those sales. And hell, they're usually on prices that are equivalent to a few hours in a movie, while with game you actually get hundred hours of fun out of it.

Bad game? No problem, as this model actually is the one that lets you experience the game and lets you see it before paying anything. The only problem is that people think it's better to pay for a "full game" than pay similar or even less price in the content you get by micro-payments. But thats only in mind, and probably so because we've got used to paying the full price for games.

And BF: Bad Company 2 will be released in a few months and for PC this time too, so I'm greatly waiting for that (and so are users disappointed at MW2's no-dedicated-servers thingie)

They say that the game is still free, and that you can still have fun without paying a penny. The point is that they destroyed the very core claim of not giving combat advantage to paying customers, and backstabbed the whole user community in the process. Still, no one in the dev/mods team has actually acknowledged it.

This is actually fairly common style with Korean MMO's and multiplayer games. It seems to work good there and players like it, so it's not a surprise companies want to try it on western markets too.

  15. Re:Times are a changing.. on EA Flip-Flops On Battlefield: Heroes Pricing, Fans Angry · · Score: 1

Well it's not like games industry is completely changing. Even DICE is still mostly making games that are sold the normal way (bad company 2 in a few months!), but I think this is a venture to see if the korean "offer free game, profit from ingame items" works in western countries too.

It's not really that bad model either, from customer point. You get to see the game without spending anything, so it's even better than just a demo. But the developers obviously have to cover costs and make income somehow, so it comes from the ingame items. And programmers, art team and all that game developing aspect costs quite a lot and western players probably aren't used for the micro-payments in games, so you have to create more incentive for players to spend some money on the game.

While I hate the "buy to be better" aspect in multiplayer games, it's good companies are experiencing these things. I tried the game too, but Bad Company was more for me. But at least I got to test it without spending anything and regretting that later.

Chromium OS is there so Google doesn't break GPL and other licenses. But it's also there to get some open source for their at no cost (*other than the maintenance cost inspecting patches and so on). Really, think about it. It's released full year before actually going out, giving the 'nice' image for open source developers and just waiting them to jump in. So that Google can cash in later (while still obviously keeping the Chromium OS open and free, because it doesn't hurt their bottom line and then they're compatible with GPL and so on)

It's quite common knowledge that Chrome OS will be locked down. There's even *already* been announcements that it will be the worst piece of *DRM* ever in front of security. If *anything* is changed in the system, the OS downloads it and replaces it again. The basic things you have running is basically Chrome OS, which nicely integrates you to Google services. And even before that, because in order to use the OS you will be required to sign-in with your Google Account. Yes, no local user accounts. Just your Google-wide account.
