    There are some things COBOL will do better than any other language.

    First, it can run through millions and millions of records very quickly. I expect that most payroll systems are done in COBOL. I can't imagine anyone doing it one in C or Java.

    The language may be simple but I have not seen any other language that can slice and dice data as easily. But you have to be careful because the type checking is done at 3am when they are running production jobs!

    I have calls that sound crystal clear one second and then get dropped the next...while both parties are stationary.

    Yes, but there is no appreciation of someone who is capable of learning new skills, development environments, and methods.

    Try explaining to a recruiter, that you have done J2EE for 3 years and before that some other technology, etc. and that you could pick up .NET and be useful in less than a month.

    Or try explaining that your Certification and extensive experience in database A, make you qualified to move into a position working with database B.

    They would laugh at you and the clients wouldn't even want to talk to you.

    Just look at Dice.com. Find a position that says anything like "Looking for individuals who can rapidly acquire new skills and work in a variety of environments".

    All they want are hired guns that do one thing and do that very very well.

    The Generalist is in a strange position. Obsolete, yet needed more than ever with the rapidly changing development tools and methodologies.

    The odds are good you will find someone who REQUIRES "8 years in depth .NET experience".

    Now, go look at the .NET time line and see how long .net has been available.

    Because our school system *is* a socialist system. When you have the state provide something to everyone, it is almost assuredly going be be only adequate at best.

    It is also capitalist because we have the *freedom* (and I think, a duty) to better ourselves. And since except for a few delusional people, there is always someone out there who can teach you a thing or two.

    It is not the job of the government schools to produce the next Nobel Prize winner. It is their job to provide an *adequate* education to everyone. If the top performers have passing scores, then the government has done its job.

    If you want a Nobel Prize winner, then it is your job as a parent to provide the extra instruction and encouragement, whether you do it personally, hire someone, or a mix of both.

    Frankly, I would guess that if you would take an in depth look at real Nobel Prize winner (NOT fake ones like Algore) you would find that they were destined to succeed despite the schools they went to.

    Generally, I think it would be a Bad Idea to not use the maximum practical amount of force available to you. And, you should continue to employ that force until the threat is neutralized.
