This already sounds unlike any other game I've ever played. I'm VERY excited to try this out. As of recent I'm on the ever elusive path to self-knowledge. This sounds like more of a tool than a game. I love games that teach you things. I can't wait!

  3. No good.. on BitTorrent Guide · · Score: 1

I can't see at this becoming a huge home broadband user network. It's too inflexible.

There are millions of broadband p2p users on cable. Nearly all cable services cap at 128-300 kilobits/sec. That's would be fine and dandy except for the fact that nearly every one of those users has a Windows operating system.

Now that's not exactly the worst thing in the world, but when you're trying to download files while uploading at the same time -- as BitTorrent basically requires that you do -- your downstream will go straight down the crapper. Why? Because with windows there isn't a way to set up packet prioritzation, aka traffic shaping.

As you're sending more and more data out to people, there's less and less room for your simple ACKs from your downloads to get to their destination, resulting in either the server waiting before it sends more data to you, or retransmission of the same data until it gets those ACKs. ACKs by nature are incredibly small packets.

If you were to be able to set up windows to automatically send them before any other data, you'd be able to keep your upstream, without affecting your downstream.

I learned about this a while back when I was wondering why the heck my Bit Torrent downloads always dropped to like 10 k/s when I was uploading multiple files too. I've searched around and can't find any simple solutions to the problem for windows. All traffic shaping tools are apparently built for Linux and BSD. I did find one but it required a $1000 license to work after 30 days or something. Please.

And for those of you who want to flame me for not mentioning QoS for the newer Windows OS', QoS is only good if an application recognizes and utilizes it. Otherwise it doesn't do jack.

Perhaps someone else knows of a simple solution?

It's pretty true. I thought it was just another typical stereotype thing, but apparently it's not really. At least from the posts you see here. It appears the people 'in the know' are just as snobbish and self-righteous as they warned us in our English class.
After I think back about how angry I was that they were teaching us that to be 'Intellectual' often requires a person to be a snob, and not fit in with the crowd... I thought that was awful.. the descriptions they provided, yet it seems to ring true when you find those seemingly rare 'intellectuals'.
I'm sure there are some out there that don't fit the stereotype, but then again they probably aren't considered true intellectuals. It's just crazy... I'll keep reading up on it anyways.. it's interesting, but I vow never to end up like the majority of the intellectual assholes that have posted here.

If they provoke thought on your part, then they're philosophical in my eyes. I've got about 4 or 5 philosophy books now because I read Plato's Allegory and liked it very much, but I believe the Matrix was the first thing that sparked interest in philosophy for me.. I was what, 15 or 16 when that came out.

Whether you sit through a 2 hour movie, or you read a book that takes you 3 years, the most important thing is that it sparks an interest and keeps you thinking. That's all I gotta say.

Yeah, my college got a couple calls from the RIAA over Christmas break; as a present a few students were given the sole decision to switch to dialup or have no internet access whatsoever.

For the rest of us, KaZaa and all other major p2p networks are throttled via traffic shaper installed on or near the router, to about 3 k/s max. Which renders you unable to use them because you always 'need more sources'.

I have since turned to IRC as my new savior. Though it's not AS easy to find stuff, the 20 k/s limit on it sure as hell beats 3 k/s. Everyone else is pretty much left clueless though.. I don't divulge my information to the others because I don't want my IRC bandwidth raped too..

  24. Dakota State University on RIAA Moves Against College-Network Fileswapping · · Score: 1

My school has already had problems with the RIAA. At the end of the Fall '02 semester the RIAA called up our school and reported a couple users sharing copyrighted materials. Those users were immediately banished from the school network for the remainder of the year.
Our school has since implemented a traffic shaping tool, which allocates approximately 3 k/s to kazaa and its clones per user on the network. This isn't hardly enough to stay connected, much less download anything from anyone. Frequently we can't download a single thing because kazaa will always require more sources. When you do download it goes near 1 k/s, frequently lower. I have since come up with a better way of getting my movies and music. I use a shell on my friends t1, and download stuff to his computer, then use ftp to transfer it to mine. Ftp is limited to 100 k/s so its decent. I would use irc, but that is limited to 10 k/s or so.

    This school blows.
