And when your cleaner takes photos of your 18" ass tickler and posts them on the web saying who her boss is......?
How about the binman who goes through your trash and posts your private correspondance on the web..?
Just trying to get an idea of when info is confidential.
Seems microsoft have to jump through 10 times as many hoops as anyone else.
And for the record (regarding other posts), im a slashdotter who likes microsoft products. sorry if i havent jumped on the bandwagon and decided that people in the know only use linux/freebsd etc.. Ill just have to take my salary (earned as an MS admin, though i use any OS im paid to support) and cry all the way home that some folks dont respect me coz im flexible in my computer usage.
Now im gonna go find a mechanic... Hope i dont find one who is too snobbish to work on my ford.
Im not a writer or an academic and the notion of a "canon" is a new one to me.. but speakingin plain terms.. I have often borrowed the reading lists of my friends studying literature degrees as i'm always looking for god books to read. And, reading as much as i do find comparing the more contemporary fiction i have read previously with older stuff and seeing the influences, and roots of storytelling going back hundreds of years.
I have also been playing computer games for over 20 years and as such really enjoy diggin up an old classic again, or booting up my ZX Spectrum to play an old cassette based game i have found in a jumble sale.
Don't think so much of these so much as "must read/play" lists.. rather try and conceive it as broad guidelines compiled by longterm gamers/readers with an aim to passing the joy they have garnered from an age of gaming.
Most of us will have been lucky enough to be around when these games were released but as time progresses the nexus of videgames will disappear in a way that books don't.
If i wasnt around my 7 year old nephew would NEVER have discovered the joys of sonic, let alone jet pac or bubble bobble...
England opressed the world and tried to bend everyone to their own empirical will over a hundred years ago.. and the americans are just catching up with us.
the teltubby interface on XP just screams out "USABILITY" sure, it requires some boxes (un)checked if you wanna do more "advanced" stuff with it, but thats what workstation builds are - for end users, who don't have your average/.ers skillbase. Server versions always do close to what i want them to do.
As it is now, more time is spent fighting windows, trying to make it do what people want it to do, than used actually getting the job done.
So buy another OS. Windows is a tool, just like a hammer, or a chisle, or a workbench. I dont buy a hammer then bitch coz i can't unscrew my wall units with it. then i go buy a screw driver.
MS do deserve a bit of a break. They get sued for putting too many "features" in with the OS, then get complaints coz the OS cant do everything.
I personally use XP/2k for my desktops coz users love the squidgy front end that makes it so fun (sure i admit it can be a bit of a donkey on some systems and requires high end machines to achieve results - but thats a whole different argument), and i run Suse Linux on my server coz i prefer its server implemntations (i only run file and web servers). This way i get the best of both worlds.. and if there is anything i cant achieve through both, then it prolly hasnt been done.
Television licence fees fund the great an d glorious BBC. which, despite many failings, still provides the best TV in the world (on a good day) and is one of the most trusted news services (be it TV, Radio or Internet) in the world.
Long live the licence fee

its the same as a Chequebook is in ENGLISH - please note, this is different that what passses for English inmany American dictionaries
English is an old, language built up from many tongues based around Saxon roots with some latin, french and celtic thrown in for good measure.
The US spellings are gradually stripping away the "frenchness" from the language in an attempt to further anglicise the tongue. I for one am proud of the mongrel language we have and think that attempts to "purify it" are akin to language fascism and will ultimately lead to a rigid linguistic structure with no room for growth and change. French is such a tongue and in my opinion their aversion to english-isms in their language is slowly converting a beautiful language into a dead one.
The internet is a great place to see the varieties of use of english and observe its development and constantly evolving vocabulary.
As such i have no direct objections to "American Spellings" merely the fact that in many american dictionaries i have seen (though not all) the original spellings are not even mentionned. eg Color = COLOUR, Flavor = FLAVOUR and of course Check = CHEQUE.
American soldiers and TV companies always get to "hear the stories about how great it is to be a part of it." Yet the rest of the world just hear about how Afghanistan has been left in the hands of warlords with no coherent government in place.
Or from Iraqis, (my neighbours are iraqi exiles with close ties to family over there - they use my PC to communicate with their loved ones), who can only see the break down of their own community that is happening after an ill planned war and a non-existant rebuilding.
Also I have yet to meet a soldier who could converse with iraqi's or afghanis in their native tongues, so am surprised your SEAL friend could... surely he would be a better example for the TV to show than the footage we get of spotty marines trying to talk to arabs in yankee english - to no avail.
What i am wondering is why the rest of the world havent had the courtesy to return the favour and liberate the Americans form the junta that seized power and has since been trying to diminsih all but the basic freedoms to its citizens in the name of "homeland (sounds a bit like Motherland, or Fatherland - names used by two other violent oppressive regimes) security".
When i got my first cable connection in the netherlands, the engineers insisted on seeing an original windows disk before they would install the hardware to my home. At the time i was running one machine on a OEM (thus disc-less) Win2k and my server for the connection was on Mandrake (5? 6? i dunno, was my first an only linux install).
Oddly enough the engineer didnt seem to notice this when i presented a full version 95 CD i had borrowed from work, and proceeded to tell me my windows box was not working as he couldnt "winipcfg". He the got offended when i had the audacity to suggest he try "ipconfig" from a command line.
The next step was to call the support line and refuse to budge til i had a direct line number for a rep. in 2nd line. after that my cable experience was a good one as everytime i needed tech support i rang direct to 2nd line and the guy on the other end acceptedthe fact i had a fair bit of prior knowledge.
(as an addendum... i can never work out whther its disK or disC so i will use both interchangably and dang the consequences)
Strong racist tones were aired in responses to a previous story.
I did get kinda shirty there too. Just wanted to speak up in support of your post./. is not alone in this rampant racism displayed in groups and forums across the ostensibly global internet. sadly censorship, too leads to all kinds of complications. though i do feel if/. can prevent posts in ALL CAPS, then it could prolly present the more offensive words and terms being submitted.
At risk of being modded flaimbait, i find the need to say.
Fuck you and your ignorant, xenophobic, narrow minded opinions you piece of shit hiding behind your cowell of anonymity. Its remarks like this that confirm to me any chance of a bit of global happiness or tolerance is merely a mirage
The brand of your coffee may be unimportant, but linked to the credit card/storecard/loyalty card you used to buy the coffee with they have a pretty good idea how much cofee you drink.
The information does exist somewhere and only need amalgamting to get a good picture of your habits.
Then your insurance company can buy access to this data and penalise your insurance premiums coz a high coffee drinker has a higher risk of heart disease.
Anyone out there wanna try and debug my "get laid" macro. Still having trouble with the "Slap" and "drink over head" errors. Not to mention the unbearable timeouts
Warning, do not try this at home if there are any women in the area. All i discovered was the speed of woman to the smell of mmelting chocolate = bloody fast
You will find that it is well within police powers (in the UK at any rate) to close down pubs or clubs that they believe are used for drug dealing or prostitution, even if not condoned by the landlord. [at least the police can make recommendations to the local licensing authority] It is also quite common for a publican to take the initiative and close themselves before the authorities do.
This then makes criminals use their own homes or business establishments to do business in. This i guess is the equivalent of forming your own chat room on an IRC server. In fact i do know of people who have produced their own chat networks contactable via standard IRC clients purely so they can discuss "growing" issues.
I for one know if my pub was being used to peddle hard drugs, I would close it down rather thaan face the responsibility for any deaths caused by the activityon my premises. and a pulican in the UK IS responsioble for such
I think this is a very understandable position to take. Microsoft get lumbered with enough bad press as it is. All it takes is for one 14 year old to travel half the globe to meet a guy she was chatting to in MSN "channels" for MS to get slated for allowing this to happen.
Childrens channel moderation should not be taken lightly. Here in the UK there is a lengthy screening process for anyone who work with children, and unless MS could guarantee correctly screened moderators (screend of course in EVERY country that the channels operate) there is no way they could protect themselves from outraged public opinion.. Parents like to blame other people for not watching their children closely enough, and if a child is using a major companies message system, they have an easy target for their ire.
I personally believe any such undertaking to be ridden with obstacles, and microsoft as a "software" company are right to back away from this kind of thing
whatever we may think Lindows has set out to achieve, there is no denying that i have just spent 15 minutes of my life reading what to all intents and purposes is an advertisement for the software on my favourite tech site.
maybe that was the idea... instead of shouting "BUY LINDOWS" at us via TV, they have instead bred an (mostly)informed discussion on the product. Not bad for a bit of free advertising
If the GPS systemn has never been degraded for civilian use.... why did bill clinton find the need to order the system un-degraded (upgraded i gues???) in may of 2000???
I would be interested in your figures here.... i,e where the f*ck you got them from... all 15 member nations have ratified the agreement. i could paste urls, from CNN, BBC, RTE, MSNBC and just about every other major news source, but i wont, coz it would be boring.

Sacry thing is in the instance that first springs to mind it was a 30 something ex-us marine who encouraged her to leave.

but yes, there should be a screening program for parents. as the old saying goes.. you need a license to own a tv, but anyone can have kids
