If they want the "engineering culture" to "facilitate collaboration across the company", they can start by getting rid of the Stack Rank review process. Why would I want to collaborate with someone who I'm competing for a top spot on the review chart with?
Never. Ballmer and similar sociopaths have no concept of cooperation. They get to where they are by back stabbing and brown nosing, and expect everyone else to do the same. The strong survive, and the rest are so much offal to be thrown away.
Ah, in that case its even worse! It indicates the US is lacking behind other countries in producing quality mathematicians!
And our company employs a lot of our programmers from the university maths department. With good reason.
Not only universities, but slashdot in general. How many times have we seen CS majors whining that they have to take math and, horror of horrors, foreign language courses. In the US if it's not marketable, it's not worth doing. And math is HARD.:-P
They had way more soldiers back then today, and payroll did not seem to be a problem. Maybe the Pentagon should go back to using whatever system they had back then.
A ton of staff, all drawing paychecks. Back then employees were assets. Now they are expenses to be avoided.
Dreaming, yes. Any idea what precision is required for electronics? Hint, a lot more than this printer gives you. Also, there are dozens of different metals and non-metals required to make even simple devices, most of which will not easily be formed/combined by such a machine. These printers do not do 1% of what people think they can.
You really based your arguments on what you read on blogs rather than personal experience? Plenty of people still run kernel 2.2 which is about 15 years old now, or 2.4 which is about 10 years old now. And if you run something like debian, it's as simple as "apt-get distupgrade" and editing a few config files.
Or... you know, just not upgrade.
Seriously. Get over it.
Just try that in the enterprise. I have Linux servers in our DMZ at work that are constantly raising red flags to our PCI auditors. I am constantly patching those things, asking for security exceptions, etc. And this is with RHEL support, not a roll your own. Try running a mission critical application on such a box. Luckily they are just minor services like FTP.
I'm supporting Windows here. I'd rather have a Solaris or AIX server any day.
Why is everyone expecting that everyone wants to socialise??? Seriously. There are so many assholes out there in the meat space, sometimes even more than on Reddit or YouTube comments. So many stupid, brain dead people. So many judging people judging others for superficial stuff.
I'm asexual, rarely meet people who interest me and share my hobbies and my interests. Movies are all shit nowadays. So why should I socialise more than the minimum (food shopping, deliveries/postal service) ???
What do you give to society? That house, the food you eat, the media you consume, all these things are due to people in society interacting, from the food that's grown and resources that are mined to services provided. You can't just hide away from society, and yet expect to live with the benefits of it. Now maybe there is some way that you are giving back, part of the whole working organism, but I'm not seeing it. To me you seem like a cancer in a living organism, and you should not be surprised if you are cut out and thrown into a waste basket. Just to use the "meat" metaphor that you seem to like.
You are drunk. "Plan to make" not "making." Not "to all," but to "people with certain disabilities". And that's just from the summary. Haven't RTFA yet.
A Change.org petition? Do people still think those have any relevance to the people they petition? Has a Change.org petition ever had any meaningful effect?
The fact that the title implies that people can just "get over" their anxieties shows that the public still has no idea about the cause of anxieties. They are a mental manifestation of a permanent PHYSICAL problem with the brain's neurochemistry. No amount of corrective therapy can fix the problem. What it can do is help alleviate the triggers that cause panic, and help the sufferer understand when medicine is required.
Are you assuming that any of this has to do with finding actual tax criminals? The IRS, just like any US government agency, works for the lobbyists. If they were looking at open software companies, then follow the money trail back to any of the big software companies. Microsoft and Oracle, BFFs all of a sudden, come to mind. Just like NSA snooping has more to do with finding and shutting down movie pirates than terrorists. Just follow the money. It worked for Watergate.
You've got it backwards. The unfathomable amount of raw materials and energy available in space will act as a great leveller, ushering in an age of post scarcity undreamed of. I'm not saying it's going to happen tomorrow, but it is inevitable, and while the first movers may make a lot of money in the process, ultimately when we've got deep orbit factories being fed an endless stream of ores by automated refinerminers that will hardly matter.
You forgot the land grab. All those resources will be owned by mega-corporations backed by government militaries, so don't think about trespassing on their asteroid belt or else you'll get a nuke up your mining ship.
And that's why this is the kind of place that can plant the seeds of revolution. This post alone is guaranteed to put me into an NSA database of known subversives. So be it. Now the question is, what can we crowd-source? How about starting with some local elections, and working our way up?
Yeah, my first thought was, "giant douche tries to explain why he isn't a turd sandwich."
This is the gist of the problem. He does not see himself as a turd, or his business as evil. He lives in a world where such things are taken for granted as business as usual. There is no room for sympathy, fair play, justice, or integrity in big business, only blood thirsty greed. As long as it is within the letter of the law, laws written by the same people, then no one should have any problem. There is no way to make these people understand the basic problem with that way of thinking.
They keep stretching the parameters and scope of what they can do. Of course that is only after they have been caught lying about the scope to begin with. Does anyone still believe them? I imagine quite soon they will start declaring that they need to have a back door to all encryption just in case you might do something wrong.
US is a great example of policy derp. The pollies can't keep up with the jackmoves of these sophisticatedly-skeezy US companies.
Just the opposite. The policies are doing exactly what the lobbyists intended, feed the corporate coiffures at the expense of the people. Remember, the government no longer represents the voters, only those who buy pay their way to get elected.
The solution is to pay your taxes and leave these decisions to the experts who understand the issues. Otherwise every initiative will just be another PR stunt funded by crooked money.
You can't possibly understand the sheer unimaginable terror that runs through our heads and drives many of us to suicide.
For all the doubters, social anxiety is not a result of emotional weakness. It is a PHYSICAL problem, just like a limp is the result of a sprained ankle. Sure you can walk on it if you have to, but the pain is terrible. We are just starting to put all the pieces together, but it is conclusive that a lack of the neuro-chemicals serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine play a direct roll. Your body naturally lowers these chemicals when you are in a life or death situation, such as when a tiger jumps out of the bush, or someone tries to kill you with an axe. It may take days or weeks for your body to re-adjust back to normal levels. Imagine living in that state all your life. Imagine knowing that being around strangers will lower your chemicals even more, just like a pouncing tiger would.
Many people use drugs, alcohol, over eating, or even video games to help raise their dopamine. It gives you a sense of wellbeing, and can be addictive. For people with physically lower levels of dopamine, they can help bring you back up out of the abyss, if only temporarily. With proper medication to stabilize your neuro-chemicals at a level closer to "normal," an anxiety sufferer can eventually re-acclimate themselves to being with strangers. Just being able to go to the grocery store, sit in a restaurant, walk in the park without panicking can massively change your quality of life. This does not mean that you want to go out to parties or crowded bars. Those things are not necessary for a decent quality of life.
If MS doesn't do some urgent damage limitation, the Xbone runs a serious risk of ending up as a single-territory console.
What people aren't getting is that for MS, that's fine. Their business strategy is to ream every penny they can via micro-transactions, impulse buys, and advertising. That works best in America. Selling compatible games at Walmart is obviously NOT the priority of this console.
On the other hand, you could use it to nuke your own phone if the police had seized it and were using it to find evidence against you...
Um, no. Nuking the phone means making it unusable, not actively zeroing out the flash card. Besides, anything that is "nuked" can be replace with new parts, re-flashing the ram, etc. So it would cut down on the casual thief stealing a phone to use, I guess, but not stop theft completely.
Sort of. The problem with the Apple stores-within-a-store were that the sales people had no idea what an Apple product was. If you came in looking for a PowerBook, they'd show you a Dell. "This one's cheaper." Since BestBuy already has staff familiar with Windows/PCs, this should work better. On the other hand, how many products does Microsoft actually sell to consumers that do not come bundled with their PCs already? Maybe they plan on selling a lot of mice. God know people aren't buying their tablets.

I think I may have started saying this to people back when Sun (remember them?) had a slogan about "the network is the computer".
And Sun is being proven right. They were just about 20 years ahead of their time.
And "whom" is most certainly still a word. I'm sorry that you don't know how to use it properly. Try reading Strunk and White some time.

That's quite impressive.
....
But, still, it's very nice to watch and dream.

"In a special lab, that formula can then be inscribed on a bronze disk to artificially reproduce the smell." What, is this from the Church of Mormon?

Seek help.
You are drunk. "Plan to make" not "making." Not "to all," but to "people with certain disabilities". And that's just from the summary. Haven't RTFA yet.
I agree completely. The term "maker" makes my skin crawl. Aren't we special.
A Change.org petition? Do people still think those have any relevance to the people they petition? Has a Change.org petition ever had any meaningful effect?
Only to help advertise a particular issue.

If you think that screws using a better but less popular standard are "handcuffs", then you're a bit of a drama queen.
Don't worry. Most of the people complaining about "handcuffs" don't even own iPhones. They just enjoy bitching about Apple.

Sherwin Smith should be fired immediately. If I threatened my customers, my boss would rightfully fire me on the spot.
Are you kidding? If he's smart, he'll take the publicity all the way to seat in the Senate.

They did a similar thing for Apple.
