    Hi Mom,

My clients are required to be at a certain level of security before they are eligible for our unlimited support plan. Until that point is reached, hourly billing is used. The reason for that is because it takes a lot of effort to keep their systems running smoothly at that point, so it's not profitable for us to keep them on the unlimited support plan.

You are enjoying unlimited no-charge support from me, but it takes away from our time to talk with each other. Wouldn't you rather talk to me about stuff other than work when I come to visit you? If so, please follow these simple guidelines and don't install any software unless you call me first.

    Thank you Mom :-)

My clients know that when they need something done, I'll find a way to get it done for them. Data mining is a frequent request that deals with modifying underlying queries on public websites. I contact the data source, ask them if there are any limits on how their data can be accessed. Typically they have none. Good for the client who winds up saving 100s of hours of manual labor with my tricks. Another frequent request is making machines that were not designed for it talk to each other, which yields combined functionality of equipment that costs an order of magnitude more. They also know that when debugging an obscure problem, I have no problem reading register dumps and locating offending files and that this I did not learn that in school.

I have theoretical knowledge that could be used for nefarious purposes in practice quite easily, but my ethics standards prevent me from doing anything stupid. Besides, it is more fun to be paid to catch blackhats who are unfortunate enough to wonder into my domain.

Addressing the nightmare scenario is simple. Sell a machine with a minimum of (4) hard drives. Set them up as two mirrors. Add a couple of additional drives in removable racks or just host the whole thing in a 4-drive SATA backplane. You can try to get away with (2) drives and putting Exchange on a separate partition, but (4) drives is far more preferable.

Keep your Exchange data separate from system drives. Backup to a removable pair of drives. Keep one of those drives offsite, bring it back, resync the mirror, and take it away again. Configure system monitoring reports correctly to actually get alerts if things go wrong.

DO NOT RELY ON BACKUPEXEC FOR BARE METAL RESTORES (known to fail)!!!

Reason for the customer? If you don't do this, you will wind up with an at least 10-hour service charge as soon as the system dies and a lot of wasted time on behalf of your employees.

I'd be very happy to take those nightmares off your hands. ;-)

That's why I never bother asking whether TV equipment can be tested. The store represenative has no ability to authorize modifications to the display anyway. My attitude is simple - if I am there to buy something, I will test that something on the spot with my own equipment store policies be damned. When I purchased my last LCD monitor, I did in fact go ahead and test it for dead pixels right on the spot by opening the box, connecting it to DVI, and running some simple tests. The store rep started saying something, which was duly ignored. No dead pixels. :-)

The worst that can happen is for me to get asked to leave, which won't happen since I have a clear intent to either buy for myself or recommend for a client a particular unit. By the way, that never happened. I do get some strange looks, but my position is that they should be happy not to have to pay my invoice for adjustments done.
