    Using a gun against somebody without any intent to kill is simply being blind (possibly deliberately or possibly not) to the lethality of the weapon.

    Nonetheless, I would argue that if a person has been stopped without killing them, the formerly held goal of killing them can be simply dropped.

    I mean, you can have a goal of getting a certain letter grade when taking a course, for instance, but that doesn't mean you'll necessary retake the course if you don't actually achieve that grade. People can change their minds.

    Nowhere is it written, after all, that people cannot adjust their expectations and intentions based on circumstances.

    Sure, it's cool that it's paper thin... but a) it's black and white, not color; and b) the refresh rate, if the video is any indication, seems abysmal for anything but static displays.

    Can somebody please tell me what possible advantage this has over an e-ink reader?

    Except the only people who *ARE* excited about this are Linux advocates. In case you were unaware, there aren't enough Linux advocates to make something a commercial success on the consumer side of things. If there were, Linux would have significantly more than 0.8% of the home desktop market in the first place.

    Don't misconstrue my intentions here, because I'd really like to see Linux proven in this arena, but I'm genuinely concerned that they've priced themselves out of the market for video game consoles, and if they are really just trying to compete with pc's, well then, they are faced with the same hurdle that Linux advocates have been struggling with for 20 years... The ubiquity of microsoft on the platform. I can see no compelling reason that Valve making this hardware should somehow mke any difference.

    I prefer it, in fact.... it's far easier to account for than bits stored on a disk drive I can't possibly see without an electron microscope.

    The biggest grievance I have with 4k is that the devices are too bloody costly.

    ... isn't always viable, unless you happen to have a tidy nestegg of funds sitting in reserve to tide you over while you recover. Not to mention the fact that your workload is only going to be that much worse (and in turn, more stressful, which is bad for your health) when you return because perish the thought if management should have to try to figure out, without any warning, how to redelegate some of your job to others while you are away.

    Well, at that point, you'd be deliberately looking into somebody else's private property.... something that you're not legally supposed to do with intention in the first place without permission, even without recording being involved.

    When in public, and not on private property, a person should darn well be able to record absolutely anything and everything that they can see or hear for themselves. On private property, you respect the wishes of the owner of the property or you are trespassing.

    You assume the purpose of shooting somebody is to kill them. That is not true.

    Cite references please. I recall hearing exactly the opposite from somebody I used to know who was a police officer. Specifically, I seem to remember that he said that a gun was not to be used for any other purpose *BUT* to kill, so he was trained not to use it unless killing somebody was actually warranted under the circumstances.

    I'm more concerned that it's too expensive for most people who buy video games to spend that much on a video game console, considering you can buy an xbox or ps3 for under $300.

    Yes, of course there are going to be people who will spend that much... but will it be enough people to make it a commercial success?

    ... is the universal prognostication from producers and technical directors where I work. I'd personally love to see a Linux console succeed, but I just don't know if this is gonna work. I'd heard that the consoles are going to be priced in the neighborhood of $500 or more, and I fear they may price themselves out of the market for all but people who were planning on getting the console anyways simply for the sake of owning one. As an even worse side effect, if their device does not succeed, it might even have the consequence of steering future people away from the idea of trying to use Linux as a viable gaming platform ever again.

    D'oh! Of all times to hit submit too soon, in a grammar nazi post! Yes, I recognized that the submitter followed up the though with " you can see it from orbit" but I was trying to address how the phrase "so much" can be used an neglected to acknowledge the submitter did that.

    Indeed. I mentally stumbled over that phrase as well. The problem is that the submitter split the adjectival phrase "on fire", a similar type of grammatical error as the more widely recognized "splitting infinitives".

    Properly, it should read "So much of Australia is on fire", although even that phrasing implies that there ought to be some sort of following idea which satisfies qualitatively "how much" is being referred to. Colloquially, however, the follow up phrase is not strictly required, the implication generally being in such a case that the speaker feels that they cannot adequately describe it with mere words.

    So really, it's not the system that's discriminating against them for relgious reasons, it's their religion that's discriminating against the system.

    In other words, she essentially has an imperative from her own beliefs to ignore the blasphemous rules, and to be prepared to face the consequences.

    Because if she's not prepared to face the consequences,whatever they are, for following her beliefs about what God is supposedly telling her to do, even where they come into conflict with rules, then how much of a religion can it be?

    On the first day of the semester, just swap IDs with all your friends.

    Why do you figure that would be helpful? It's a student ID, probably with name and photograph on it. Any teacher would recognize on sight that they were wearing a card that didn't belong to them.

    Is there some particular reason that she would be required to have this badge on her person when she goes home after school? If the badge stays in her locker when she's not there, and gets put on in the morning when she arrives, this is not any different than somebody wearing an employee badge while on the job.

    The disadvantage of these third party sensors and attachments is that it's difficult to find outside inspiration for new LEGO ideas that use them. Generally speaking, LEGO idea compilations tend to restrict themselves to standard LEGO only.

    Because I get most of my ideas for LEGO models from other LEGO models I've seen people build, or by browsing through LEGO idea books, 3rd party lego connectors aren't likely to find much use by me. It's not so much that I copy other people's ideas, but I will mentally note the way things are used when I've never seen a particular LEGO design pattern before, and can often find myself inspired by it to use the pattern on something completely different.

    I've seen, sometimes, ideas that use 3 or 4 programmable bricks... when the only reason for that number of cpu's is only because there aren't enough i/o ports on a single brick.

    If you are wanting to reuse the same program over and over agin, I can imagine that having to reupload several megabytes each time you turn it on would get pretty annoying. Of course you could also store it on an sd card, so that might nt be an issue

    It's less an issue of regretting having made the switch even though the USA did not (as a matter of general practice, that is) as much as it is that if it had been known at the time that the USA were going to largely ignore the metric system for general use, then it's very likely that neither Canada nor Australia would have bothered at the time to make the switch either. It may have happened eventually, but I think there's a very good chance, at least in Canada, and I'd be willing to bet Australia as well, that it would not have happened even yet.

    And as I said initially... I wonder how many other countries made similar choices.
