I tried replacing my Windows OS with WinZip, but none of my applications worked anymore...:^)
WinZip is not a competing product. An analogy would be Joe Fjord opening a diner... The Ford Motor Company probably could not care less about "Fjord's Diner". But, you can bet if he started building and selling cars under the "Fjord Motors" name, he would get their attention.
Bad example. The CORPORATES are not coming into you home, stealing your pictures, then selling them. You are coming to them, purchasing a service from them, and agreeing to their terms. If these terms are not spelled out to you at the time of sale, then they are being evil-money-grabbers and you probably could get them in court. If they do let you in on the terms of service, then sorry, you agreed with it by buying into them.
The instructors don't come off as "smart" at all. Look at a similar example. When you take driver's ed, do you want an instructor to teach you how to drive; or an instructor that teaches you how to build a car, the theory of the internal combustion engine, and Newtonian Mechanics to describe the motion of the car, then (and only then) teaches you how to drive.

saddling consumers with all sorts of stupid shit-broken protection mechanisms
Nope, thats not why record sales are down... How many copy protected CDs have been released? One, two? I can't think, but it is a very small number. Even if nobody bought them that wouldn't dent sales.
slandering and libeling customers and consumer's advocacy groups and basically anyone who dares question the supreme truth of the RIAA
The record industry is hell bent on alienating their customer base by treating every single one of them, without exception, as criminals
Just because it gets a lot of play in the geek circles doesn't mean the general public knows about it. I have see virtually no high profile coverage of this in the conventional media. If people don't know about this it can't hurt music sales.
Releasing vacuous drivel like "backstreet boys", "britney spears", "n'sync"
Record sales aren't down because of this. Just because record companies release crap doesn't make me stop buying the music I like.
I don't know why music sales are down, and personally I don't care. If music comes out that I like, I will buy it. If I can't exercise my fair use rights on it, I will take it back.
I can't see how this is a useful service. It seems that everyone here is under the assumption that there are people actually watching the stuff fed from the cameras. Assuming the 2400 number is correct, I seriously doubt that the NYPD, FBI, CIA, or any other Black Helicopter organization would have the manpower to watch the 57000 hours of tape collected per day!
OTOH, these cameras are useful in reconstruction of events after the fact. Mugged with no witnesses? If there is a camera recording what is going on, it doesn't matter. What irks me the most about this is that (outside of Slashdot) the people that whine the most about the cameras are the ones that they are there for in the first place. Recently there has been a lot of talk about traffic light cameras to catch people who run red lights. All of the interviewees that I have seen that are against it say something to the effect of "Yeah, I do it" and then give some lame excuse. Guess what buddy -- its AGAINST THE F*CKING LAW. If you get caught breaking the law then I have no sympathy for you whatsoever.
So, what M$ proposes as a remedy for their monopoly is to install more M$ software on new machines, and worse, on machines destined to kids, which will naturally swear by M$ products later.
Yeah -- that's a big help. We had loads of Apple ][ computers lying about our school, and most every other school in the '80s (don't know what its like now) and look at what good it did them.
Typical slashdot dramatization. There are loads of precedents against prosecution of the tool maker. When was the last time the manufacturer of a handgun (or knife, or screwdriver, or icepick) was tried in a murder case?
And Apple (or other software vendors) can compete with this how?
Cause we know that putting you stuff in schools is the surest way to create a monopoly... When I was in school (god, that makes me sound old) you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting -- guess what? -- an Apple ][. Look where that got Apple -- they are so big and powerful now that Microsoft had to save them.
BTW -- just to set the record straight... We weren't really allowed to go around school swinging dead cats. Live ones, maybe...:^)
All in all, the whole thing looked like a commercial for Intel, not a sweet concept PC.
Gee, who did the article say was teaming up with HP to make this thing? Let me check... Oh, yeah, there it is: Intel! What they hell are they doing?!?!? Intel shouldn't waste their money promoting their own products... They should be getting together with HP and developing a product built around AMD chips... Sheesh.
As for the expandability of the thing -- read the first line:
Equipped in their concept PC.
Concept widgets generally never make it to the public as is... Oh, look, it says so right here:
Will we see these new PC's on shelves soon? Not likely..
If you are looking at something other than the link in the article, I am sorry, please post a link, but the way I read the article this is nothing more than what they call it: A Concept PC.
Sensors in the units measure the finger movements and artificial intelligence and a language processor determine appropriate keystrokes or mouse movements.
What kind of AI? If I type in my bosses name on the virtual keyboard, will it display "Brain Damaged Lazy Bastard"?
At one point in the article, they state that the worst case someone could be charged $48/month. How would this be billed? Would I get pages and pages of all 4800 URLs that I visited? That'd be great... Page after page after page of 10/28/2001 10:56:25 -- http://www.ramdomsite.com/foo/grendle/frodo/frotz/ news_b32fa1bfc473f05800d0.html . How do I dispute something like this? Its not like a phone bill where you can look at a number and say, I don't recognize that number... Could you honestly look at that URL and say, I didn't go to that page? Especially if www.randomsite.com was a site that you spent a lot of time at. Nope, too much room for abuse by the billers, count me out.
1. It is the songwriters' and the artists' and the producers and the record
company' s job to create that music, bring it to life and to market. That comment summed up the problem right there. Placing the Record Companies on an equal footing with the people who actually make the music. How many of us would have as big a problem with the RIAA and its activities if the percentages were reversed: That is, the artists receiving 95%+ of each sale and the record companies receiving <5%. That seems a lot more fair to me.
2. God, I hope the new slashcode includes a "moderate newscomment" option -- 'cause "From what I can surmise, the speech dealt both with her love of money and her desire to roll around naked in a pile of money." deserves a -1, Flame.
What's next, first-post comments and/or goatse.cx links on the homepage?
What corporation in their right minds would want to take over the shuttle fleet? There is no way they could make any money if it costs $400 million per launch. Remember that the current shuttle fleet is really an experimental fleet. They are all first-generation test-bed type craft that should have been replaced a long time ago, perhaps by an X-33 style ship.
Second, how many non-government entites out there could run the shuttle fleet if they wanted to? Boeing, Lockheed, and GE are the ones that come to mind that have the size to handle it -- assuming that it would be a US-based company to take them over.
Nice idea in theory, but it probably won't happen to the current fleet. Hence, since there is no replacement under development, it probably won't happen at all.
After Microsoft, the next candidates IMHO would be tobacco companies.
How fscked up is that statement? Whilst MS may be a horrible, monopolistic company bent on dominating the industry at all costs, saying that what they do is worse than what the tobacco companies do/did is absurd. Only on Slashdot...
What does her boss setting up a meeting with her have to do with PIM's on a computer? Was the reason he set the meeting at that time because he saw that she had a personal engagement, or because he needed to see her? How is inserting a meeting into your electronic schedule by your boss any more binding that your boss walking up to you and telling you that you need to be a this meeting?
I disagree, I think the fact that there is action in the DOJ and the fact that MS is losing market share on the server side are indications that, for whatever reason, people are listening. If we start treating every change that Microsoft makes to their products as evidence that they are flexing their monopolistic powers then our valid arguements will be drowned out by all the noise.
No, I am not starting yet another "Big Brother" melodramatic rant, I am talking about the next Microsoft "News" post to appear on Slashdot. I guess it has gotten to the point where MS can do nothing without it generating an article and the accomponying 500 "Microsoft is Pure Evil(tm)" replies. What will be the next "news" article to show up?
