I found that combining IceWM with ROX-Filer
makes for a really lean and nice desktop
environment. ROX-Filer can do things like
remembering MIME types, etc.
50/50 market share (or close to it) would be ideal for everyone, surely?
Even better would be something like 33/33/33, or
25/25/25/25. From an ecosystem vulnerability
point of view, two equally dominant browsers is
only marginally better than one.
It seems the computer industry is prone to these accidental 'monopolies'. Sure, there are other instant messaging networks, but almost everyone uses AOL/AIM.
The monopoly is not worldwide like the Windows one, though. Everyone here in the Netherlands uses MSN Messenger (which is even more depressing). Some years ago it used to be all ICQ but that's been forgotten now, and AIM has never even been heard of.
You are incorrectly implying I did not think they got any money from advertising; obviously they do, but I figured the following, the first three of which are more in line with what they profess to be their core business (search), would account for a bit more than 2% of their total revenue. I guess not.
Was anyone else surprised by the statistic that 98% of Google's revenue comes out of the so-called "paid search" business? No wonder they are getting scared and saying stupid things now. They're no longer primarily a search company at all, their core business is now advertising. Amazing how people still ascribe value to their "do no evil" mantra.
Sure, but if I'm not mistaken, the Spamhaus list is based on absolute numbers of spam, and South Korea has a smaller population (48.6 million) than the US (293 million). So while their spam problem might be less bad in absolute terms, it might still be significantly worse for each individual.
Coincidentally, the spam problem in Korea is also worse than just about anywhere else, it's for good reason that much of the world is firewalling the country off. So I wonder how much of the decline in e-mail usage there is due to the spammers.

I can't believe Wired actually let that slip by without even a mention of what the group actually stands for.
Nah... the name says it all ("National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality"). That and their assertion that porn is horrible because it! causes! (shock! horror!) masturbation! quite spoke for itself. Made me ROTFL, too - I guess it must be because I'm one of those evil commie you-roe-pee-uns. I loved how they implied masturbation is worse than heorin addiction.
It's the ideas in the article that matter, not who said them. Appeal to authority [wikipedia.org] is a common fallacy.
This must be why you linked to a Wikipedia article to back up your opinion. I've got to hand it to you - whatever it was you were appealing to, authority it certainly wasn't.;-)
Stop being a prat. True you pay for the OS in which IE is included(well most people do), but given that most people need that OS(haven't seen a linux distro which is ready for public consumption yet, though it works perfectly for my won needs), we can say that the OS license is a necessary expense for running a computer. Since IE is bundled with a necessary expense it is essentially free. Perhaps not as in speech, but as in beer, and all things considered most people are for more concerned with free beer than free speech. Judge this as you will.
Very good, the Microsoft monopoly must really appreciate that you have swallowed the party line so well. Not only do you actually believe that a forced tie-in sale equals being "free", you actually go so far as to believe that a Windows license is a necessary expense for running a computer! And to top it off, you got modded "Insightful" for that little masterpiece. Truly admirable! I recommend you apply for a job at Microsoft as soon as possible, they love to have people like you - if you don't work there already, of course.
There is tons and tons of GPL software available without source code on the net. Nobody does anything about it.
Nor would that be necessary. The GPL requires that the source code be provided upon request by the distributor of the binaries - it even allows you to charge shipping & handling. It does not require that the source code accompany every binary copy.
It doesn't cost the user any more or less to use it. It's not like you can buy a cheaper version of Windows without it.
Sorry, "included in the package" still does not mean "free" as long as the package costs money, no matter how much the Microsoft monopoly wants you to believe otherwise.
Note that it's against IE's license (which is conveniently unavailable from the Microsoft website and in the application directory; you only get to see it when you run the installer) to run IE on anything but a properly licensed Windows system. To wit:

E.g. running it under WINE would be illegal, at least if you don't own (e.g. have paid for) a Windows license, but the above language could also be interpreted to mean that you can only run it under Windows even if you do own a Windows license. In neither case it is anywhere near "free" though.
It's very obvious that companies are buying these keywords.

I'm not so paranoid to think Google is actually lying to us by selling sponsored links outside of their sponsored links area, but Google does have a major and growing problem with the effectiveness of link farm spammers. The quality of their results has really gone down as a result.
Why are people tolerating rape as a punishment for crimes? Why is the public not only allowing, but ENCOURAGING a loophole around the Eighth Amendment?
Indeed, and why do so many Americans (especially the government) think they are in a position to lecture anyone about human rights, never mind invading another country with human rights as some kind of hypocritical after-justification?
Why has Firefox rocketed in popularity when Mozilla has been around forever? Partly because they stripped out the mail/news reader and all of the other bloat that was unnecessary for a good web browser. ~4 MB download for an excellent browser. That's all I want and need.
It has always been possible to use the Mozilla installer to download and install just the browser/composer and nothing else. But that has never been emphasized by them, as illustrated by the perpetuity of this "bloat" myth.
The difference therefore comes down to simply marketing. Mozilla has never been marketed - for most of the time, the mozilla.org site even had a disclaimer saying it was not for end users! - while there is now a huge marketing campaign behind Firefox.
I see I said something some moderator didn't like or agree with. At least I don't see another reason why the parent could be "Offtopic" and the grandparent "Insightful" while the two were about the same topic.
Sex != procreation. I don't think too many guys go to clubs with the goal of getting a woman pregnant:-)
No animal has sex with the goal of getting the female pregnant, they all do it just because it feels good. That doesn't mean it's not about procreation, it just means they don't know it is. For humans you might say that many don't want to know it is. Meanwhile the males keep unconsciously selecting the females for the physical properties consistent with being able to raise healthy offspring.
You bugger off first. As long as the US superpower pressurizes other countries about their elections, the rest of the world is perfectly justified in responding in kind.
Besides, this was about being able to look at a website -- not about "having a say", whatever that means (it's not like the rest of the world can vote in any case).

It's dead, Jim.
Which is different exactly how from the insane amount of time learning and dicking around with Windows trying to get it to work properly?
