The facts show that it is man-made, without a doubt, but some people such as yourself refuse to believe it.
With out a doubt? science is ALWAYS skeptical (or atleast it's supposed to be). It is always doubtful. it should be questioning everything.
As far as I can tell, man made global warming is based on very loose models that have not survived the test of time. I'm very dubious of it's merits. Especially when it's being used to to try and push sweeping changes across the world. And scientists saying things like "we might need to put democracy on hold".
I don't understand libertarians in anyway. I have never seen a market correct it's self
Yeah, because the changes the free market makes are largely unnoticed, because you expect certain things out of it, because it's fairly efficient.
It's corrected things like poverty, and improved technology, and lowered prices, and makes it so you can buy things without being an expert on them. It doesn't happen overnight though.
and that shit never worked out.
Libertarianism has worked out, you might have heard of this place called the United States of America. It's based on libertarian ideas. Unfortunately, not many politicians subscribe to the ideas that founded this country, including many of our founders.
Also there's this place called hong kong, that was an extremely poor place, within a lifetime ago, yet no longer is. very little government.
I also think libertarian systems "should" work, just like communism "should" work
I just gave 2 examples of libertarian countries working out. Can someone give me an example of communism working out? could be interesting if someone did.
what the fuck has obama done that makes him not so bad, and bush so horrible?
let's see, he's continued the 2 wars. He's sending more troops in to afghan. He promised to get them out of iraq. He's giving out more stimulus. he's continued the same policies on wire taps, indefinitely imprisoning people with out trials. He hasn't even closed down gitmo. He's increased our debt faster than bush did. He thinks he has the ability to assassinate americans overseas.
And you think he's better because he technically didn't start the wars? I guess that thinking absolves LBJ of any responsibility because he didnt' start vietnam. Or that tax breaks are bad because rich people get them too (tax breaks are bad because we didnt' cut any spending)?
I was hoping he'd prove me wrong, that he might keep some of his promises. I was hoping he'd increase transparency and stop the invasion of our civil liberties. But of course it was just hope and very little change.
so if java has some libraries that make it possible to manipulate registers, that makes it a low level language? Or any other language?
It says strong abstraction from the details of the machine.. I think when i can write a simple function and have it compile and run on 10 different platforms that implies strong abstraction from the details of that machine.
From Wikipedia: A high-level programming language is a programming language with strong abstraction from the details of the computer.
I think if you're not moving register values around, it's a pretty strong abstraction. You even stated that it's a portable lower level language, which to me, is mutually exclusive from working with the details of the computer.
You're going to hear this stuff. Again. And Again. Lots of times between now and the election. Some of you with fiscal conservative tendencies are going to fall for it. Some of you with libertarian tendencies are going to fall for it hook, line, and sinker.
You're alternative is what? To regulate more? better? Your regulations will cause unintended consequences that will be worse than what you tried to prevent. Well either that, or your regulations will do pretty much nothing. Why was BP even drilling in deep water? regulation. Can't drill on land, can't drill in shallow water. Did regulations prevent this from happening? nope. There was already a good chunk of regulations in place. Will they prevent it in the future? nope. The fact that BP is going to lose billions will have a much bigger impact than any regulations that might get passed.
And funny enough when you dig into the root of the consequences of letting corporations run wild, you'll find usually the problems start with the government. Think the housing crash was cus of greedy corporations? well it's true some gambled, but there was good old federal reserve to print money, and there was good old barney frank & company making banks take on mortgages they otherwise wouldn't. And then what do our wonderful politicians do? bail them all out.
Not that it's always the government's fault, there's certainly plenty of blame for private companies, but the worse disasters are usually rooted in government.
If you mistake what is happening in South Africa right now for sport, you simply don't grok it.
But that's what sports are about. It's not just soccer, it's not just the world cup, it's sports in general. The olympic gold medal hockey game was watched by a ton of americans. Many of whom, hardly know what hockey is. But these games, do get more involved, when it's nation vs nation, as opposed to city vs city.
Well, if it helps there's a lot of aspects to football, which is why it's the best sport, IMO.
There's the raw physical ability. Speed, strength, quickness. Big Hits are also fun to watch. Football isn't a contact sport, it's a collision sport.
There's the tactical perspective that QBs especially go through, in choosing which receivers to throw to, what the hot routes are, how to handle different defensive/offensive formations
There's the strategic aspect, which is where the coaches in their play calls, try to win the chess match, or try to exploit their oppositions weakness, or get them falling into patterns, then exploit that.
Maybe also the execution aspect, which means that the players are all doing what they should on that play.
Excelling in one of these areas, can at times, win you games. With the NFL you don't get such a huge variance in these things, which is one reason a lot of people prefer to watch college ball. With college ball you also get more risk taking (going for it on 4th down, trick plays) which also can make it more exciting. It also feels like players play with more emotion in college.
I know that competitive sports are so popular because they, essentially, allow for the enactment of modern alpha-male style dominance displays.
You know that? That really doesn't explain why so many people root for the underdog. I think your trying to over analyze the fact that people like to compete and have fun, as well as watching said action.
true enough, i shouldn't have used the plural.
I think you need to reread what i wrote.

The us has social healthcare...

"socialism - a political theory advocating state ownership of industry"
If by universal health care you mean government run, it's certainly socialist.
that gives me a whole new insight on your sig...

just figuring this out? people tried before and haven't been successful.
things as "rights" or "freedom and liberty" to the exclusion of everything else that's just as important
And what are these other things?
You're going to hear this stuff. Again. And Again. Lots of times between now and the election. Some of you with fiscal conservative tendencies are going to fall for it. Some of you with libertarian tendencies are going to fall for it hook, line, and sinker.

And since when does the constitution stop much of anyone/thing in DC?
I'm gonna go ahead and guess that one of the following is true:
- You were not paying attention to slashdot circa 2004
- You as not remembering it
I also remember i think 2000, bush gore and a sideof nader or something. maybe that was also 2004 though.
yeah and the view that that's something the government SHOULD be doing, is almost universal.
And funny enough when you dig into the root of the consequences of letting corporations run wild, you'll find usually the problems start with the government. what is this # List Item /# syntax you're doing?
We have forgotten that business exists to serve people
No. Most businesses exist to trade with people. But you're free to start up a business for some other reason, if you can finance it.
nothing like wild unfounded accusations! lol
or maybe i missed something.
yes because MS has never done anything useful. Their dominance over office and the OS markets were all just from them being a monopoly.
I would say this is not new to slashdot. Although /. is still better than sites like digg, imo.
