I don't think that three rocking clicks would work. What if you need to press two buttons at the same time (Maya). I once saw a rip-off of the current Apple Pro Mouse. It had the same form, was translucent and optical. In the middle it had a wheel. Two different clicks where indeed achieved by rocking the whole surface to one side. I tried it and immediately thought it sucked. I don't remember who made it (saw it on display in a store) so I can't really search for pictures.
This thing is called "Machinima". Here is a link to a page dedicated to this stuff.
I used to be quite into the whole thing back when Quake2 was new. There were some weird films out there (especially for quake1) and even a talkshow.
So if you still have the old quakes lying around somewhere you might want to check out some in engine entertainment.
IIRC there was a problem with doing films in Quake3, because the specs to the demo format werent published. The author of a video editing program for Quake1 and Quake2 said that doing a version for 3 is not possible. I do suppose that a lot has changed since then, though.
Didn't we see that one coming?

PC Prices to Rise?

I guess this is inevitable. Apples announcment to increase the price of the iMacs was met with a lot of criticism but now it looks like they were only the first.
The economic climate is changing. Memory and Flat panel Displays are getting more expensive so it's only natural for the whole machine to cost more. I just hope that DIY machines will get more expensive as well. Otherwise the posters that compare apple prices to machines they build part by part will not only continue to think that their arguments are valid, but even $100 more valid.
Are the nvidia drivers really better? With these two companies I can't help feeling that their hardware department is much better than the driver developers. Maybe they are not supposed to make optimized drivers. After all - when you buy one of their top of the line boards you know that its fast. If it doesn't really perform that well you will have to upgrade. Because the next one is really going to rock...
Does it really matter what you run? This is all about computers, right. I think that apple.slashdot.org is justyfied. Just look at the number of comments the average apple story gets as compared to many other topics.
I wonder if some, all or none of the apple.slashdot.org stories will make it to the main page. My guess is that you will be able to decide in your preferences so no worries there.
Thats what it basically does in the new commercial. You should be able to see a cool video here sometime in the future. Seems like the link is stevedotted at the moment.
I think that it's a lot of old hats under one nifty interface. You can import your photos, edit them , print them on your inkjet, put them on the web, have prints delivered from kodak and have a hardcover bound Album with nice layot delivered to wherever you want it.
Most of these things where possible before, but not this nice. And the program is free. Prints and the Album will cost (29.99 for the first 10 pages, 3 dollars for each page afterwards IIRC)
A Jobs Keynote is way better than slashdot. It even managed to bring the apple servers down. By ourselves we wil never manage that;-)

New iMac Announced

There where times when the Keynote really blue me away. After it was over I did feel a little cheated though. iPhoto looks like a great application. I downloaded it allready, but didn't have a chance to try it out yet. You can get it here. Download size is 13.4 MB.
The new iMac looks amazing and has great specs. It is "Flat out cool". A bigger screen iBook is another great addition to the apple product line. What worries me, is that there have been no changes to the professional line. The PowerBooks got a Combo drive just a couple of weeks ago so that is okay. But having PowerMacs and iMacs with the same processor and more or less identical clock speeds seems like a strange move to me.
This is beyond the rumour sites. All of them that I looked at swore that the gigahertz barrier was to be broken. At this Keynote it wasn't. And I don't think that Apple would just put faster PowerMacs in stores without having at least one Photoshop shootout on stage first.
It was an okay keynote I suppose. But after all that hype some people seem to have expected iTransporter, iEndofworldhunger with iWorldpeace thrown in. And all that running 3 ghz.
10. Finally, I think last year's prediction for Cisco Systems will come true this year. I wrote "The answer to every problem with the Internet will continue to be 'pay more money to Cisco.' At current prices the stock is a bargain."
No, I don't own any Cisco stock.
I don't get it. Why listen to predictions if the author himself doesn't do what he expects everyone to do...
The way I understood it they will return to New Zealand to reshoot sequences for the next to Films. Not the DVD.

The bootup movie does have the biggest problem though. If you watch the wheelspinning in slomo you can see, that the apple doesn't really move in synch to the hand manipulating it. The hand moves a bit and suddenly the apple jumps to a different position and only then moves naturally. looks like a post production mistake to me.
i just read that apple did not register a iwalk related domain. can anyone confirm this? they registered ipod.com before that was released...

Would anyone consider this iWalk thing to match these descriptions?

Everytime something like this happens you can judge how real the thing is based on Apples reaction. If they request it to be taken of then it's probably real.
But then spymac.com is supposed to be run by Germans and Canadians. Maybe that would protect them a bit from Apple legal.
Bungie was bought by Microsoft but they sold their Trademarks Oni and Myth to Take2 Interactive. Take2 are owning Gathering of Developers (GOD) so GOD will work on new games from this two lines now.
Halo might not come to linux but Mac is not completely out of the question. Microsoft does support Macintosh quite well. There is Office, drivers for the Hardware and some games. If it is easy to port Halo to the Mac (because they are halfway there allready?) then it will happen. Halo 2 though - I think not!
the press release with info about take 2 can be found here
"Return to Wolfenstein" is already under developement by Gray Matter Studios (Ex Xatrix, developers of King Pin). Their homepage is empty but you can find screenshots here
What bothers me about the.plan is that Carmack is basically starting a fight with the other two owners of id. That cant be good - can it? --
Thanks for sending me over to the Filthy Critic. I doubt that this page will replace Capalert as my favourite movie review site but I had a good laugh learning about filthys rating system.
I am not a programmer and I have never used Python or Pearl but I once was told a little story: Python was invented by Guido van Rossum. Guido has a brother called Just, who togheter with his partner Eric Blockland is a very well know typeface designer. The two of them have a company called letteror. A year ago I had the pleasure of seeing one of their presentations. Their presentation was showing an overview over their typographic work and all of their applications were made in Python. They said that they were probably the first users of Python and heavily involved in the design process. Maybe thats a reason why the code has to be strictly structured and formated - it was developed with the help of non Programmers. Something every developer for every application should do.
