Oh it's tough work. No doubt about it. But they also get to "play for a dozen years" then retire at 30 with millions in their pockets. Pay the players say 60 to 80 grand a year plus travel expenses [e.g. hotels, food] and then we can say "whoa, they work hard for the money". ...

Just out of curiosity, if the world were to follow your visionary plan, who would get to take home the extra money? There are a handful of sports organisations with quite astonishing payrolls and they still manage to make a profit. Player salaries are mostly what they are because the market values them like that. If you want to admire athletes who can't live from what they earn, even though they play in the majors, then you might want to check out Major League Lacrosse.

There are two possibilities. It might be F12 or there might not be an eject button. But you don't need one. Since the drive is slot-loading you don't need to open it (which is what the eject button really is for). Discs already in the computer can be ejected using various methods in the finder (click the little eject icon next to every removable medium in Finder windows, drag the icon of the thing you want to eject onto the trash can in the dock, use 'File: Eject' in the Finder.)

But Windows Media Player is definitely more pleasant to use on Mac than on its native platform. It just launches and does its job.

I wish I could agree with you on that one. If the sole job of WMP was to open and play Windows Media files you download, then yes, it would be fine. Unfortunately I would mainly use it for streaming video. And in that regard it is simply horrible. I really wish they'd make that aspect of it usable before the baseball season starts. No matter how fast the connection, I always run into problems with buffering and bad audio-video-synching. And it doesn't support nice features like full screen. All of which was no problem when I tried watching the same file on a Windows computer.

And yes, I know that mlb.com offers all of their live-streams in Realplayer, but all of the archives are Windows Media only and thus as good as unavailable to me. Same goes for Comedy Central.

  4. Re:Audio books on Three Books On The iPod · · Score: 1

Interesting. What functionality does the iPod give you for audiobooks that it doesn't for standard music tracks?

It does remember the point in the file where you last stopped. Even if you listen to tons of other tracks or audiobooks in the meantime the next time you start a particular file it will resume where you left (unless the battery runs out while you are listening in which case it remembers the last set position, I think). With the newest iPod models you can also set the playback speed for audiobooks to slower or faster if you are not happy with the original. And finally you can jump ahead to markers in the track, but I don't know how--or rather where--these markers are defined.

In fairness to EA, though, the window for shipping annual sports games is a lot tighter than for a new FPS. People will buy Doom 3 or HL 2 in one year or the next, but you can't sell NHL 2003 in 2004. (OK, scratch that one -- you can't sell NBA Live 2003 in 2004.)

Than again it is not all that necessary to be fair to EA in this case. They are not entirely free of blame for the fact that there is a need to ship an annual sports game. They figured out they could unload one on the market every year and people would buy. Having to produce for a tight shipping window they either created or at least helped create, does not excuse them from (allegedly) exploiting their workers in such a manner.

I don't know nearly enough about bluetooth to even guess how it would affect battery life. What I do know, however, is that bluetooth headphones - like all wireless headphones - need a power source. So you'd be in a situation where you have to charge two different things whenever you run out of power. Or you have to buy the kind of batteries that power hearing aids. Not a cheap thing and also as far as I know not a size that works for rechargeables.

Bluetooth headphones sound like a nifty idea, but one that doesn't make all that much sense for a portable player. Sure, people use them for their cellphones, but you generally use them a lot less there than you would listening to music. So the battery problem is not as big of a deal.

you have to remember that in (most) really large companies, the sheer scale of the organisation makes people feel compelled to be depersonal in their social interaction (see www.intel.com for the perfect example). "Hey cool man!" kind of chat isn't going to look good in the eyes of his boss.

Hence the mention of an imaginary or not lawyer responsible for going over all outbound communication. I know that there are good reasons for the practice, but one side effect is to make interviews lie this completely useless. Why then do companies even bother to "talk" to interested consumers? Pump out some press releases and be done with. The level of actual content can't be any lower.

I also thought that the ceremony would have been a good one had they simply given everything to Scarlett Johansson. The Oscar nominations will be published tomorrow and I am curious to see how closely they follow the lead from this awards-show. I would like to see Ang Lee to get at least a nomination as best director for "The Hulk", but am aware that the chances are slim. LOTR must be the big winner this year, but don't hold your breath for Gollum's nomination as best actor.

I read the article yesterday (it was linked from macslash) and he stated that he got the Tatra because of a lifelong fascination for the maker. Apparently his father was a driver for the leading class during communist years and took his little boy along in a Tatra.

What I really liked about the article that there was no justification for using a Mac. Seems like he is simply a fan who never even considered using anything else. That should set an example for many past and future flamewars on Slashdot.

Very true. On the other hand the barrier to entry has been lowered considerably in the last couple of years. Whereas shitty stand-ups were confined to amateur nights in clubs and untalented writers had to photocopy their own drivel, nowadays everyone can just go on the internet.

The editorial process has moved from a handful of people (a small audience at most) to a whole world full of them. Some might welcome this development, but think about how many collective hours man has wasted by forcing thousands to figure out that something sucks on their own.

About the project from the article: I don't really know how you can perfect--or even improve--a stand-up routine without at least hearing the audience. Isn't that the most important metric? Hearing them laugh or stay quiet at certain parts of the performance? The audience typing some acronyms and emoticons can hardly have the same effect, can it?
