    You mean they are forced to buy Windows. Dell was running an ad right hear touting their netbook with Ubuntu. click on the add all you get was a machine with Windows, and yes I tried to reconfigure it without any OS, not possible. Tried to find the advertised product also not available. I don't want Windows yet if I buy a new PC/laptop/netbook guess what I get.

    Have you looked at Hercules? It's a great mainframe emulator. It will run MVS, ZOS and in a wierd configuration you could host it on a 1U server running Linux, bring up ZOS, and then run Linux under ZOS.

    But COBOL has evolved as well. Object Oriented COBOL has been available for years, and the backwards compatability makes it possible to upgrade your OS and language to use the new features without losing your legacy apps. Graphical frontends that get their information from a legacy COBOL app and present in a maner that even Bozo could understand.

    Was mini (197x) my dad built from parts tossed out from various clients (He was a service tech with DG) DG Nova 820, 64K Core 2 board CPU and hooked up to a ksr33 for paper tape reading. A couple of CRT's for us to use. He still has it and I imagine it will still power up. I'd have to search for the bootstrap loader though, We misplaced the card 8 years ago.

    I will go so far as to say that I think one form of copyright simply should NOT exist. That is "performance rights".

    So you mean any joe or jane should be able to pick up the latest dvd and use it as the feature presentation in a dollar theater? Hmm three shows a day at 75 people a showing, is over $1500 per week. Not bad for a $20.00 investment.

    Well I have 4 childrenaged 17 to 6. I also DO NOT want the government, federal or otherwise restricting my daughters access to any information. PERIOD. that is MY job as a semi- responsible parent.

    Whatever happened to personal responsibility in this country (USA)? Can't parents take responsibility for their kids? Or are they to busy being soccer moms and dads and scout leaders and whatever else they can think of to get the kid out of their hair and into some activity where the parent doesn't have to deal with the kid.

    Well, they could all go home and try to get real jobs or at least reaquante themselves with how normal people live. I know most of my local, state, and federal politicians are only concerned about getting reelected, not in performing a public service.

    Less government is better. Everytime Congress meets another stupid law gets passed. I think Montana has a good idea. Their state government only meets onve every two years. It's pretty hard to line your pockets that way. It also cuts down on the crap protect us from ourselves laws politicians seem to like. Let nature and Darwin take their course.

    You have to remember that in 1990 when Chip registered UNICOM.COM, there were few TLD's available. .EDU, Nope not a school. .GOV, nope not part of the Gov't. .NET, nope again not a network provider/company. .ORG Nada not a non-profit. that leaves only .COM.

    I seem to recall reading Chip's posts on usenet back then and UNICOM.COM was his address and the address of his 'company'. That alone gives hime the right to register and use unicom.com.

    One of the 'rules' for sitenames even back then was All the good names are taken.

    Opps,

    I have 4 kids aged 5-16 and ALL are equally comfortable on Linux, Win98 and Apple.

    My school system uses Apple in K-5th grades and Wintel for 6-12th. I read these comments an think back to the old days when Apple dominated the schools and IBM dominated in business. All those kids learned on Apple, moved into Corp America and are now on Wintel stuff. No problems seen. People can and will adapt to whatever you have to give them. Granted all the 5&6Yr olds do is games but they have logons to my Lixux box, they have figured out how to customize their display and have even shown a preference for KDE or Gnome

    My kids learn MSOffice at school and then come home and use StarOffice or Koffice (their choice) for their homework. No problems and no complaints about missing features either.

    School is about learning not rote memorization

    And I gotta be against you. I'm the admin for 3 NT servers, 6 Unix and variants boxen, 100 Win 9X workstations and the odd Mac. I gotta say that M$ products seem to be designed by a group with no real concept of security or script kiddies or anything except law-abiding sheep^h^h^h^h^h users. They were late to the Internet, late to graphical interfaces and late to security. Now the seem to following their proven path of litigate not inovate.

    Viruses have been a part of computers since forever, remember Wm. Morris? (I know not a virus but a worm) PC virus scanning software has been available forever as well.

    Well, I can think of an example that happened right here in the good ol' US of A. Does any one remember the Sedition Act of 1798 from history class? Seems it was a federal crime to say, write or publish anything opposed to the government. This treaty sounds like the proverbial 'nose of the camel' we have been warned about. It also sounds like the old line, If you are inocent you have nothing to fear. Well I am innocent, or at least not guilty, and I fear police of all types and jurisdictions. Yesterday it was a stopable offence in my state (NJ) if you were a minority. Who knows what will be next. Perhaps people who voice dissatisfaction at the 'shrub's' policies. Didn't 'they' already fire a government contractor for posting unflatering information on caribo herds and the Arctic Wildlife Refuge?

    Well as the father of 4, 3 of whom use StarOffice for school/research and GAIM for IM, I would like to see AOL on Linux. Then I can finally get rid of one more Win9x box. We have a small network 3 laptops and 3 desktops runing RH6.2 (1), Win98(4) and Win3.11(1). Any excuse to get rid of another Win box is OK by me. My kids like the fact that they can use StarOffice on any PC and get access to their files from any PC. It reduces arguments over whose turn it is to use the PC. I would only have to have 1 Win PC for the kids games. Reader Rabbit isn't available for Linux, and I am just to lazy to write something.
