You are forgetting the fact that the 471 years are multiple sentences running consecutively.
Now, lets take a look at your examples again.
Disfiguring with acid
10 victims = 20 - 40 years 100 victims = 200 - 400 years
cutting someone up with a knife
10 victims = 20 - 40 years 100 victims = 200 - 400 years
Gunning down people with a machine gun
10 victims = 40 - 120 years 100 victims = 400 - 1200 years
He has 79 counts of computer-hacking related offenses and also with identity theft. Over 160,000 forged e-mails. Lets try using two years for each computer-hacking offense
79 * 2 = 158 years
That leaves 313 years for the forged e-mails.
When prosecuting someone, it is a good idea to charge the perpetrator with as many offenses as possible. I think that the cracking offenses alone are sufficient, but a little overkill definitely sends a message.
Mr. Carlson's alleged activities were definitely overkill.
Design the system to accept updates by radio (I think that they already allow for this). Test that part of the system thoroughly before launch. Get as much of the software written and tested before the launch. Finish testing and fixing during the time it takes to get to Mars.
This allows for hitting the launch window without burning out the software developers.
I would be very pissed off if someone were spreading around my salary info. There are only five locations where my salary info is known: Myself, My employer, IRS, State dept of revenue and my mortgage company. No one else knows.
I don't know what others in the office are making and I don't care. I am happy with my salary and that is the only issue.
I am assuming that you paid for your unit with a credit card. Talk with your credit card company and dispute the charges. You got a lemon and now they are not replacing it and you don't even have the lemon.
You could try to get your pub to get internet access. Maybe setup an 802.11b network. I know that this does not answer the ability to be completely mobile, but it would allow you to connect at the pub.
At least Apple has done well in the last few months. Although I don't think I would purchase an Apple desktop computer, their Powerbooks running OSX would make me reconsider buying an x86 compatible laptop.
That is what happened for me. I have a Sony Vaio PGC-F270 notebook. I have it maxed out on memory at 192MB. It has a 6GB disk and I have been informed from Sony that you cannot upgrade the harddrive. I was running out of room. I knew that I did not want an XP system.
After seeing the MacWorld speech, I went out an bought a nice shiny new Powerbook. It helps that I am a former Nextstep developer and I currently work with java.
I now have my UNIX/Nextstep system with a powerful GUI. I have the applications that I need. I have a development platform that I can use.
It is also the thinnest notebook computer that I have seen. Cudos to the Apple design team!!!
I could not agree more. There are also places in the southwest (desert) that are free of electricity, telephone, radio towers, etc. If someone is truly EM sensitive, then move to somewhere that you can be comfortable.
If you cannot deal with cold winters, then move south. If you cannot deal with the heat of the south, then move north. If you have allergies, then move away from what you are allergic to. If you are allergic to corn pollen (as an example), then you move away from the farms growing the corn. You do not make the farmer stop growing corn.
Disclaimer: I do not know if anyone is allergic to corn pollen, but I am using it as an example.
There is nothing technical about the skateboarder's responsibility for something being broken by his/her own actions. Does the owner need to post a no skateboarding sign, or can we as a society rely on common sense.
We, as a society, have relied on the common sense model for a very long time. What has changed in our society, that people don't think that they are responsible for their own actions?
Yes, people shoud do a better job in writing their software. That does not excuse those that are writing the viruses and the worms.
I you bothered to read my post, you will see that I never said that they were terrorists. They are criminals! I just get sick of hearing people excuse these criminals actions as youthful indiscretions. They need to pay for their criminal acts.
We should not prosecute teenagers who go for a joyride in a borrowed car. After all, they are just showing off for their friends. The owner of the car should have had a better security system. It must be the owner's and manufacturer's fault for leaving a hole in the automobile's security system.
People, including children, have to take responsibility for their own actions. Should Microsoft be writing better code? Yes! That, however, does not excuse the actions of these worm writers!
We don't need to punish those that embezzle from the banks, companies, etc. Nobody dies. Production doesn't stop in our factories, our banks and credit cards keep making debt for people, the hospitals don't keel over.
The worm writers steal resources from companies, universities, governments, etc. when they have to deal with tracking down and eliminate the worm. This is valuable time that could be used working on other issues. Just like with embezzlement, there is cost to people involved.
What the browsers need to do is to allow a user to specify, Always accept a cookie or always reject a cookie. This would give the user control over his/her information.
I use a program called Cookie Pal from Kookaburra Software. It only runs under the MS operating systems, but it gives me that functionality.
Give it a try! I have no connection with this company other than the fact that I use their software.
You must not be familiar with a quote from one of our founding fathers:
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
- Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759.
With these cameras and the software, you are trading an essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety!
Don't forget to place the sterile room within a faraday cage.

I think that it is so far up ther that it came back out and they went back for a second round.

What I really want is their FileMerge utility on MS Windows. I have found similar products, but none that match its elegance.

Don't forget that they will also assign a name and a unique id to your child. They won't use the SSN, because they will want to embrace and extend it.

Following your argument:
We should not prosecute teenagers who go for a joyride in a borrowed car. After all, they are just showing off for their friends. The owner of the car should have had a better security system. It must be the owner's and manufacturer's fault for leaving a hole in the automobile's security system.

Following that train of thought...
Just like with embezzlement, there is cost to people involved.
btw: People make debt for themselves.

TiVo subsidizes the hardware. The people who bought a unit and are not subscribing received their unit at a cheaper price because of TiVo.
You paid the hardware vendor, not TiVo. The only way they make money is through subscriptions.
I have not read the E.U.'s privacy policy, but it is probably a good template for this.
