I know you're joking as that would take longer than the age of the universe, even if you could scan it at a rate of 2^32 IPs per second.

However, one of the reasons why I did it is to gather data about where hosts are going in the transition from IPv4 -> IPv6. Some of the information I have includes IPv6 and IPv4 data paired together. So although you couldn't scan someone's block, you can get an idea of where they put their stuff in the new IP era and maybe compare what people usually did in their migrations. At least I'm hoping I'll be able to gather that data. I'm sure a lot of non-vegan geeks will have a host answering at :0000:feed:face:dead:beef and necropheliac geeks can have :6969:feel:dead:babe:b00b.

  4. Its useless if nobody uses it on Ask Slashdot: Is Reverse DNS a Worthy Standard For Fighting Spam? · · Score: 1

A bit over a year ago, I performed a reverse dns scan of the entire internet. It took around 4 months and amounted to about 62GB of data which I haven't sorted through just yet, but I'd guess based on what I've seen so far that only 20-30% of the utilized Internet has reverse DNS entries. This is kinda what I suspected all along, but I now have data to back that up. How can anything properly use reverse DNS with that low of an adoption rate. Its sad because so many more services could be offered if it was properly adopted.

What I want to know is, are the DNS hosting providers in on it? Are they modifying their software so that the customer doesn't see information. That would be where the real badness is and should be publicized. It also wouldn't be the first time that a 3rd party DNS type of service was misused. For instance, whois queries being sold, etc.

Let me tell you another story of a "Super Hero". He is a Slashdot poster most days, but on his day off he got involved and tried to illustrate a counterpoint without knowing how to spell.

Actually, my favorite superhero is Spellmaster. He has a 6th sense to know when someone has just fiddled a few letters and can jump in the situation in a moments notice using the super speed of his OC-192 connection, usually posting anonymously because he's a superhero after all so he doesn't need to take credit for his deeds. And he doesn't take shit from no one. Usually he's as nasty as possible to make sure that evil spellers don't return.

Back when USB and Firewire where new (mid-90s). Apple was trying to push Firewire as the primary connection medium instead of USB and Microsoft was trying to push USB. 12. Shatner was being a jerk on Ask William Shatner Whatever You'd Like · · Score: 1

Reading through the link it appears to me that Shatner was teasing Wil, but Wil, as a kid, took it the wrong way. I'm willing to bet that if Wil actually spent some time talking to Shatner that he would form a different impression. The problem is that our first impression often colors how we perceive others. We often do not give that person another chance.

No. I think its pretty obvious what Shatner was doing to Wheaton. Usually people who joke like you're implying say at the end that they were just kidding and don't let the person walk away with hard feelings. Especially when its a kid, unless you're trying to motivate them. For him to do that to Wil just shows how much of an asshole Shatner can be and the response Wil received from other staff only confirms it. Yes, I said that right. William Shatner is probably an asshole. Just seeing his behavior on live TV since the 90s, I don't really like him much and only tolerate it when I see him in some movie or TV appearance. I never saw what the big fascination was with him anyways. His character perhaps. But Shatner himself seems like such a prima donna and I've always been surprised that the rest of the geek community idolized James Kirk and shunned characters like Wesley Crusher. Its probably just jealousy. Being a Trekkie myself, what I'd like to say to such jealously is so the fuck what! Get over yourself and just enjoy the show. Kids and all. If you can't accept the fact that there are kids on the show, then you are missing one of the core messages of Star Trek.

Interestingly enough, Slashdot interviewed first Wil Wheaton 10 years ago to the month. I was fortunate and got to ask a question on that one, but I refrained on this one because I simply am not a fan of Shatner as stated above.

Social security isn't a ponzi scheme, its just the victim of the United State's own success and radical advancements in medicine and thus life expectancy. The life expectancy in the US in 1935 was 58, in 2000 it was 74. The initial planners probably just didn't expect the majority of people to live long enough to collect. I guess that's gambling, but making it out to be ponzi scheme I think is an incorrect assessment. It looks like the retirement age started out with SS at 65 or 62 at half pay or whatever. But the life expectancy increased past that dramatically after World War II, especially with women. So for the past 60 years now, we've had the average life expectancy greater than that of the retirement age, and probably social security didn't plan properly for that. I'm just looking at the numbers though, so it might be more or less than that.
