Its unlikely that Apple (or anyone) will catch up with Google for Maps.

Simply put, this is not just a matter of aggregating mapping data (which is a huge job, that Google has many more years of experience at and something like 6000 people working full time on.)

Its also a search problem. And again its unlikely that anyone (especially a non-search engine company) will be able to match what Google can do there.

This is the same reason Siri kind of sucks and simply doesn't match what Googles voice queries can do. The backend searches are simply much better in Google land than in Apples. Doesn't really matter how much you improve the top layer if the data underneath is inadequate.

Google should package Android and Motorola and spin it off. Then they could partner with Apple to provide the best in breed search to iOS customers (who appear to be the best source of revenue for Google because they do use the Internet more than Android.)

Not likely to happen though. Too many egos in the way.

For the desktop market Linux doesn't have enough penetration to seriously impact their sales. A slightly slower driver will be sufficient for most people and the number additional sales by having a GPL'd driver is probably not enough to make them GPL it.

Remember they consider that a GPL driver in Linux will impact their sales in the Windows market where they actually do make money.

Android may change this if it becomes a significant driver for sales of Nvidia parts.

And as Apple's maps database tech gets better so will Googles.

If Apple is serious about mapping they need to get an army of people doing the same things as Googles army of people working on their maps are doing (7000 people by some accounts.)

This is also a search engine issue in some respects... First you need the actual map data, then POI's, then the ability to search for some random thing and if possibly get an address that can then be displayed by the actual app on the phone.

The TomTom map data seems to be less goodly than Googles. The POI database (TomTom and probably lots of other sources) also seems to suck by comparison. If you are not searching via Googles search engine then probably the results there are not as complete as could be...

If Apple really wants to compete they have to solve all of the above issues. Its not just the map database, not just the POI database, you also need to tie it together with a kick ass search capability. Google has all of that and their end product improves daily. It will take a boatload of cash over years before Apple can seriously compare services.

That said the actual iOS app is pretty! Unfortunately Google's app when it is released will probably have a similar look and feel but be plugged into a much better search engine, a much better POI database, and better map database (and don't forget streetview!)

One of the interesting tidbits about streetview, Google apparently does pattern recognition to pull out data from signs, house addresses etc... So even if you don't actually use streetview you are benefiting from it when you do searches.

Something like 50% of the population was needed to produce the food we eat back then. So one would assume that if the unemployment rate is less than 50% then something else must have popped up to for those people to do.

Ditto for most any manufacturing job that was done in the middle of the last century. E.g. the number of people required to build a car in 1950 vs. 2010. Yes, some of those jobs have gone overseas. But even if you pulled every one of them back on shore you would find that the number of people employed in the automotive industry would still be FAR less than it was 20-30-40 years ago. And they would be producing FAR more cars per employee now.
