My favourite geek t-shirts are the O'Really ones, particularly "Snooping email for fun and profit" and Practical UNIX Terrorism They only seem to come in white though and it aint really my colour unfortunately.
What the hell are you talking about? What is it then?
There's a world of difference between buying a professionally encoded MP3 blah blah blah...
Professionally encoded mp3's? Come on... Making an MP3 aint exactly rocket science is it? The quality of an MP3 is primarily related to the codec and bitrate used in the encoding. You can pay someone as much as you like to encode it for you, but I doubt you could prove that the resultant file is significantly better than one produced by the average person at home.
Napster is primarily used for downloading copyrighted music. This is not legal.
If that concerns you, then don't use it, if not.. then fine... download away, but for gods sake quit it with the Sanctimonious excuses for stealing other peoples copyrighted material.
I have used a similar service to this for a couple of years now, and it has been my experience that gaming performance is usually slightly better than modem, but not by much. Counterstrike is the only game i play online, but i get a ping of around 120-240 instead of 200-300 with just my modem (33.6Kbps).
However, my signal comes from a ground based transmitter several km away as opposed to a satellite several thousand km away. This probably makes a difference, but i'm not up to doing the math right now.
Incidentally, the hardware I am using (Sagem Telsat Turbo) runs great under Linux, albeit with a binary only driver.
That being said, I am moving to DSL as soon as the pricing here in NZ drops to a reasonable level, mainly for the outgoing bandwidth.
yeah.... we need more stories about stuff exploding on slashdot!! Perhaps we could get an explosives icon as well, just so I don't miss any exploding stuff disguised as something boring.
I haven't checked em all out yet, but the "Cruise Missile Mayhem" one is genius! For dramatic effect, try cranking the 1812 overture on your stereo while you watch them... da da da da da da da-da-da BOOM BOOM!:)
Having said that, are they truly stealing ad revenue from eBay? The crawlers count as hits yes? Is it not these hits that are used for the marketing of ad space? I don't know how this works, but I'm guessing it's something like this.
neither do i have any clue what i'm talking about, but.... The ads are coming from different servers, doubleclick i think. I assume biddersedge's crawlers don't load the images, so effectively the ads don't get hit. Thus, ebay makes no revenue off that page view, yet still expends a smidgen of cpu time and bandwidth.
It just trawls up the question of whether it is ethical to use sites whose services you use, without viewing their ads.
127.0.0.1 doubleclick.net in the hosts file for example.
didn't we dismiss this as advertising hype for zdnet when the inflammatory article was first posted here? And now when Bob Young responds ON ZDNET, the story gets posted again??? Does Bob's article state anything we didn't already know?? Most of his points could have been lifted directly from this forum for God's sake (I wonder if Bob Young reads slashdot).
This might provide a reasonable counter argument for the original article, but it would only be worthwhile reading for non-geeks who might not know this already. Hardly worth a posting on Slashdot.
I'm sure Zdnet are lapping this up. Slashdot effect twice in as many days. I don't know what advertising on Zd costs but I'm sure they'll be making a killing off this. Don't do them the favour.
There goes my theory that timothy and emmett are the source of all the crap stories on here lately too.
Konqi??? You've got to be kidding me. Will the person responsible for this step forward so that they might be beaten with a pointy stick? It sounds like a bloody teletubby for gods sake! Does anyone actually think to themselves, "ooh i wonder if there's anything new on slashdot, I'll just fire up Konqi". This is right up there with Geeko, the Suse chameleon/gecko/greenturdwithatail.
Really... If you're going to name your software, for the love of god, please try to make it something inspiring instead of this cutesy crap
The reason it worked for Neo is that he didn't have to train his muscles (though they did regrow/train them to some extent). I guess you would have to program your entire body.
hmm... an interesting hypothesis, but consider for a minute my alternate proposal... After lengthy consideration, it is my belief that neo's kung fu abilities had less to do with the state of his body, and perhaps a little more to do with the fact that the matrix is a work of fiction.
can you say fiction?
perhaps you might want to consider getting outdoors a little more often...
.....the groupware the Navy needs, at a fraction of the cost, and without any risk of catastrophic failures or public relations disasters....
Fraction of the cost, possibly, but without any risk??? Come on.... You are kidding right? (At the very least you're kidding yourself). One only has to look at Bugtraq or the Errata list for any of the Major Distros to realise that there is plenty of potential for failure in Linux.
The "Risk-Free" Operating system does not exist, and we don't do Linux any favours by touting it as that OS.
I totally agree. It seems that many of the posters here won't be happy until they hear that the DOJ has ruled that Microsoft should be beaten to a bloody pulp and fed to rabid ferrets.
Hate Microsoft because of their actions, but don't hate them simply because they're Microsoft. hummer
What hardware would I need to load in a movie? WHat hardware would I need to put it back out to a VCR?
I'm not directly familiar with Broadcast, but I have had some pretty good results messing around with Adobe Premiere and Aftereffects. I have an Asus V3800 TNT2 with TV out, and exporting to a VCR via that, was quite simple. As for getting video in, check out http://roadrunner.swansea.linux.org. uk/v4l.shtml which has some pretty good info on linux supported video capture cards, as well as other v4l stuff.
As far as i can see, fragmentation is not really an issue here. Even if they did create a proprietary distro, wouldn't it only run on other massively parallel supercomputers? Now, i don't know about you, but I would guess that the vast majority of Linux users/developers don't have access to this type of machine, and consequently wouldn't have a use for such a distro.
Of course, if anyone does happen to have a Cray in their closet, I would most graciously accept a shell account:) later, hummer

not very good at video games are you?
:)
hummer
Obscure?? pffft...
My hovercraft is of eels!
you have beautiful thighs!
So where are your facts and links to refute the point?
I haven't used Clothreyes, but Digimation make some amazing plugins, that amongst other things, simulate cloth and hair.

aibo
vaio
playstation
airboard
woo... spooky..
But seriously, speaking of gathering information, by now they have a web log chock-full of IP addresses of potential enemies.
Yeah right... Like anyone on slashdot reads an article before they make their whiny post.

How about a toaster that feels love? ;)
(Look, a Futurama reference, moderate it up
No no.... it's a red dwarf reference... ah well... moderate it up!

It's a good thing napster have stringent new user requirements so the banned users can't just join up again under a different username.
hey.... wait a minute....

What the hell are you talking about? It sounds like a fairly specific patent for a piece of hardware, or possibly a manufacturing process.
wooo... that sure is scary.
or perhaps you were just after some cheap karma??
I can give directions to a drug dealers house
great!! we're having a bit of a dry spell over here...

Do you remember who the Joy Division guy was?
you'd be thinking of Ian Curtis

Then, this guy Phil Katz comes along, with a new shareware program called PKARC, which is faster
ha ha... pkarc? as in noise a chicken makes?
/me scratches and pecks at the dust.
pk! pk! pk! pkAARc!!
alright officer, i'll come quietly.

so....
VA absorbs themes.org.
VA absorbs sourceforge.
Andover absorbs slashdot.
Andover absorbs freshmeat.
VA absorbs Andover.
/me starts looking for a bigger fish.
If we could cram a distro in there as well, we'll be well on our way towards a giant amorphous Linux blob.
