I don't know a single person outside of the geek/IT realm who doesn't go to costco/best buy/etc and buy a whole new computer with a new monitor when the old one is outdated. Not one. The iMac is no different - your new computer comes with a new monitor. Monitors get outdated too ya know, or are you still using the same 14"CRT from 1997? The vast majority of people out there don't care that they won't be able to re-use the monitor as a second display with their shiny new computer - most don't even realize you can do that )or the thought of openeing their shiny new computer and adding a second video card is far too scary for them).

As far as any other types of upgrades go, you've got to be joking, right? Swapping video cards and CPUs? Not a chance - heck, by the time the average user feels a need to upgrade either, the interfaces are different and their mobo is obsolete. Hard drives? That's what externals are for. Have you seen the storage displays at the big bix stores lately? USB/FW drives are selling like crazy because people just want to plug them in without opening their cases...

Not to rag on Myth, but yes you can... I watch TiVo recorded programs on my Mac and Windows boxes over the net, burn them to DVD, and with a little hacking (I'd hardly call running a bash script hacking though) I can stream video to my tivo from any PC on my network. All of this without DRM.

Now, back to Myth - I'm sure it's a great application, and I'd probably be using it right now if it werent for the lack of HDTV options on it. I don't get any OTA HDTV where I am, so all HD must come from cable or sat. Now I know most cable cos don't encrypt basic cable HD streams today, but they can and will, at which point my myth box would be obsolete. Same thing with firewire from a cable box - if I can get the right one from my cable co, and as long as they're not encrypting the feed it'll work, but that's not gonna last. Any more permanent HD recording option would require cablecard...

I'm afraid that Myth is one of those techs that is headed for self-destruction at the hands of the content delivery companies and their love of DRM.

I have a 400GB Gig-E Linkstation that's currently running Debian (took all of 5 minutes to reflash it to deb), and it serves just about every purpose you list above except the WAP... Umm, no I didn't - that's the point of a product that transcodes for a *portable* device. You still have the full resolution version sitting on your PC - TiVoToGo doesn't drop resolution on normal transfers...

Secondly, TTG doesn't use a 'special codec' on DVD burns - if they did it wouldn't work in a DVD player. It simply decrypts the tivo transport stream and uses the same MPEG2 encoded video that's present on your tivo box. I know it's cool to brag about your mythtv box on /., but seriously, do we have to resort to making stuff up about other products to make ourselves even cooler?

That being said, I personally prefer my hacked tivo with vserver on the box and VLC as my PC viewer (see, I can brag about l33tne$$ too). I transcode (yes, and lower the 'resolution' - *gasp*) for my portable using pocket divx encoder or ffmpeg. My Mom on the other hand is quite happy with TTG for ipod transfers.

I could point to several compromises thay've had to make to do this as well, but I like my job. If a project/product cannot be done with windows, it can be justified anyway, but it's an uphill battle. In most cases, the fact that an appliance runs Linux makes it an even harder battle - things like switches/routers etc that run RTOSs like VxWorks get by with no problems, but throw in a management or monitoring solution based on linux and your job is much much harder.

Considering the low distribution cost to the record companies, they could sell these at half the cost and make a LOT more money -- on volume. But that's not gonna happen.

I don't think so. See, you represent one end of the bell curve we'll call 'cheapskate' and the fact is, no matter what the price were set to, someone will fall further along that curve than you and claim that everyone is missing out on huge profits by not dropping the price in half.
