    Well, thats the current system, but add an option to redirect certain permissions to a set of dummy data and you are better secured (and its more convenient).

    App store: Apple certifies app, people trust Apple, people download app, app creators can take advantage to get user data, unlikely to be caught
    Cydia: No certification, people are more likely to look at what the app is doing(also because someone who uses Cydia has a higher probability of knowing how to look at it), app creators more careful to not get a bad reputation

    Also, "smart" plugs would have a safety advantage: if a little kid sticks a butter knife into the socket, the knife wouldn't request any voltage.

    I would prefer outlets operate by the simple concept
    If the circuit is completed, electricity flows
    Though the issue you mentioned is covered by ELCB's

    You dont need to have beyond normal hearing range to be irritated
    You just need to be young
    My home router emits a crazy pitch when its under heavy load, my laptop does it when on idle for a long time and my CRT does it always, but its noticeable when the audio is muted. Some tubelights ,power adaptors and voltage transformers do it as well
    But its rarely audible to the 30+ year olds

    When you login to the application on your phone using your Rapid Rewards account, the app submits your username and password information as plain-text (unencrypted) to a Southwest remote server (mobile.southwest.com). A potential attacker can simply sniff for the data on the network and steal it.

    Wouldnt it be quite difficult to sniff data from a GSM network?

    Well, if there exists a process for sending images from a camera to a PC
    And a process to send images from a PC to a remote PC
    How would the process of linking these 2 processes together by a 3rd process be prior art
    Or to give another example
    Process 1:Download a torrent file to downloads folder
    Process 2: torrent client retrieves file from a predefined folder and starts download
    Process 3:Copy file from downloads folder to the predefined folder
    Now, if P1 and P2 are patented, then P3 can be patented in theory I guess, but practically shouldnt be allowed to

    Even woth non working stuff, its often feasible to repair it easily, or cannibalise components from 2-3 devices to make a complete device.
    5 laptops with a different part failed in each can be converted into 4 functional laptops after all

    Its difficult to draw a line
    Say, someone discovers a way to convert scrap metal to gold
    That person should be allowed to have a patent on it
    But someone shouldnt be given a patent for facilitating video conferencing by piping images from a camera to the local PC and then over a network to the remote PC

    Even when tilting the balance heavily in the favour of new technology, (say, Atom at idle vs a P4 at medium load), it takes atleast 2 years of 10-12 hours/day running to recover the costs
    And my 2 year old N79 lasts 4-5 days on battery, not many Androids can (I know new ones have a lot more features,etc but both accomplish the basic requirement of a phone with the capability to browse the net, take pics, play games, watch videos,etc)

    It seems like electronics are used for a shorter time in US than in developing countries
    As an example, cell phone(smartphone) lifecycles seem to be 1-2 years for US customers but 2-5 years for the Indian markets
    Similarly, you wont find people having an issue with using a 3-4 year old PC built out of reused components as long as it does the work it is intended for
    As an example, many cybercafes and print shops still run p4 based desktops, they simply dont need more power

    If I'm not into romance novels, but prefer SciFi and they can use that data to advertise SciFi movies to me, isnt it better?

    It amazes me when I go to the store and they expect me to carry a "loyalty card" for a minor discount

    Well, personally I dont see any harm in letting them know which brand of what product I purchase and getting some discounts for that
    And anyways, buying habits (Atleast mine) are erratic enough that they would have a hard time establishing trends, other than a trend of erratic buying habits

    But 70% of the HDD motors coming from a single supplier comes real close

    Western Digital and Toshiba had factories in the flood zones whereas Seagate was mainly affected by the resulting supply constraints from business partners who were forced to halt production of related components. Among those was Nidec, which produces ~70% of the world's hard drive spindle motors.

    Or you could look at older mid range smart phones. My nearly 2 year old Nokia N79 gives about 5 days of use on a single charge with moderate 3G internet,voice and application use

    Most (if not all) of them are American I think.
    Arent the rest of the shows there of a similar or only slightly lower quality?

    How do you dumb people down?
    Either you give people enough comfort/facilities/freedom that they are satisfied or you impose rules that make uprising impossible
