Every "good" must have its "evil." If it doesn't, it must create one.

This is exactly what the secular progressives do to the conservatives, they villify them and distort them into caricatures of Stalin, Mussolini, et cetera. Note that I didn't say the Democrats do that. The Democrats are politicians and want to win elections. There are, however, groups like Moveon.org and more extreme groups who have no qualms about calling Republicans fascists.

Regardless, I would definately think twice about buying a Nikon camera because of this attitude of theirs. They should be embracing others. They should give the SDK source code away just so that it becomes a standard (i.e., "Buy our cameras! Every image viewer can read the uncompressed highest quality file format!"). It makes sense to me. They're not selling a format, they're selling cameras and lenses.

Canon should respond by releasing the full specifications and some mechanism for certifying implementations. Better software tools will only sell more cameras, lenses, and other accessories.

Cathedrals in Europe were built as a matter of civic pride by the various cities. A cathedral would bring pilgrims to the city. Those pilgrims would carry money that they would spend in the local shops. If you were a stoneworker or other craftsman, it was a prestigious thing to contribute to the building of the cathedral.

I don't buy that. Something has value because it has value, not because it happened along by chance.

Not always. Look at the diamond industry. There are piles and piles of diamonds that have been mined and held by the De Beers Group, more than the market could ever buy. So they just don't flood the market. They release only so many stones of a certain sizes and qualities each year to the jewelery makers. So if you want to buy a diamond of a certain size and color and quality, there are only a certain number out there. This drives up the prices. Of course, De Beers creates the demand with their advertising ("A diamond is forever").

Oh wait a minute. You said value. People will buy things that have no value, however.

Unless it's an English class, they're just looking to see if you've learned the material for that course. Especially for the essay questions in the midterm and final, they will always just skim the papers for key words, phrases, and dates. They underline them and add up the points. That's just the way it works. The "B" student, who writes something interesting, but doesn't cover all of the relevant material, loses points.

For a term paper, you additionally have to use correct grammer and spelling. Also, do not try to argue something stupid. Don't take a contrary opinion to the professor or to popular opinion on the college campus. You won't be able to convince the grader, and they'll think that if your argument isn't convincing, then it must be flawed and you deserve a bad or mediocre grade.

The only Japanese texts that are written all in phoenetics (hiragana or katakana) are children's books. Those will have spaces in between words. Text that is written for literate adult readers is written with kanji (alphabet from China). Most nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are written using one, two, or three kanji. Sometimes nouns are strung together to make longer nouns (sort of like compound nouns, e.g., "All-Japan Kendo Federation" is "zen nihon kendou renmei" and is written using 7 kanji strung together). Hiragana is used for particles (which mark parts of speech and join words together) and also for adjective and verb conjugations. There are also some words which are written in hiragana, however they are mostly common and easily understandable, so there is no problem. Foreign words are usually transliterated using katakana (another purely phoenetic script). Because they're written in katakana, they are automatically differentiated from the surrounding kanji and hiragana. Differentiating words isn't all that hard. The problem is really learning all the vocabulary and kanji.
