Perhaps not for those of us actually working in IT. I know I routinely do things that are simple for me and I amaze those on my sales team and the management with my "technowizardry". For instance, being able to set up a mobile hotspot using my cell phone and netbook out in the middle of nowhere. Things like that seem like magic to the uninitiated.
I guess I don't really help out with stopping the stereotype though. I often answer with "FM Principal" (F*cking Magic) when I fix something and don't know what exactly the fix was (or if the person asking will not understand the explanation). I've been using the phrase FM principal for about 15 years and I have yet to be questioned on what it actually means.
As for the portrayal of hackers in general in movies.... Get over it, it's fiction. Try and suspend your disbelief for just a few moments and you might actually enjoy that movie.
You sir win. Let them worry about monopoles instead!
I personally love the Doomsayers... They keep me quite entertained with their lack of scientific understanding. I can't wait until they start running up their credit cards in advance of Dec 2012.
We've got one of the best particle accelerators around (the Sun/Sol) and it hasn't managed to snuff us out yet and it's had BILLIONS of years. The LHC doesn't even come close in power levels comparatively speaking.
GRBs to the best of my knowledge release (at least) two separate bursts at different energy levels at separate intervals... One (at least) high energy, the other lower. I'm guessing that's where the delay figures in. I believe the lower energy burst is referred to as an "afterglow".
That's from memory, so I may be off.
I may be wrong, I haven't looked into this in years... But isn't THIS cycle the cycle that by their calendar the sun (Sol) is set to start dying? Even by their records, this supposedly gives us another 50,000 years before it's over.
As mentioned, it's been years since I read up on this... I don't think much of prophecy, especially when it's misinterpreted.
For all those who believe this is real... Start running up your credit card debt NOW!
Sounds about right. I went into BestBuy for a long CAT5 cable (I needed it that day). I looked around for a bit and they didn't have anything longer than 12ft. I needed about 50ft. The salesperson there told me "They don't make cables that long, the signal gets poor above 12 ft." Being a network admin and knowing the truth I continued on and asked him for a solution. He took a couple of the 12 ft cables + some CAT5 extenders (just cable extenders) and he assured me that they "bumped up" the signal to go the extra distance. The price for everything was about 4X more than I was willing to spend (imagine that!). I drove back to my home in the next town over and made the cable myself. I do not buy anything there anymore. Buyer beware!
Technically Uranium *could* get them off planet. Extensive research was done by both the USSR and USA on nuclear propulsion drives. That being said, it probably wouldn't be ideal due to contamination. It probably wouldn't do to spread fallout over a planet we will likely colonize one day (if we don't wipe ourselves out first). Link action if in doubt: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_pulse_propulsion
Will you guys please stop the "then don't buy it" bullshit? This is a discussion, not eBay.
My point is valid. If you are concerned about not having an ear free to listen to what is going on around you, DON'T BUY THE HEADPHONES THAT REQUIRE BOTH EARS TO BE LISTENING. Seems pretty common sense. Am I missing something? There are definitely other (cheaper) options out there. You have the normal ear buds, the single earbud (saw this at Radio Shack awhile back for about $4 USD) as well as hundreds of other options I'm not going to spend the time to document.
Point being, what's the point? All things being equal, these ear buds are less flexible than normal headphones and will probably be significantly more expensive. Is this an answer in search of a problem?
My thoughts exactly. I don't need my headphones to try to figure out what I'm doing, I often don't know myself. Besides, I long ago switched to bluetooth stereo headphones (with a play and pause button on the side).
SD (that's 480p?) no problem, HD I've had problems with.
I have a video (no name or copyright lawsuit) which is 1080 (p or i, can't remember). It was downloaded to my netbook. The video became horribly detached from the audio by at least 4-10 seconds (even at 1:30 into the video). I couldn't tell you the encoding to save my life, but not really pertinent since I've played just about every codec out there at SD resolutions just fine.
I'll test out a couple of known files at different quality levels and then comment at this thread.
At least I got a form letter back...
Being that my previous job with IBM was outsourced... More power to Billy Gates.
Hopefully he's not putting those screws in the actual reactor core...

Earth-shattering even...
Start running your credit card up... You can't take it with you!
Nice quote from Babylon 5 there.

Today... 50% chance of pebble storm in the morning. Evening; 30% chance of magma flood.
Kudos... I hate the "first" post crap too!
The BEDAZZLER you're talking about actually made me sick to my stomach... Of course it was due to bad taste.
Didn't read the link I provided eh? Water is not needed (except for human needs). It's a controlled nuclear explosion powering this.
Hence why I went home. I'll be damned if I'm paying $60-$70 USD on a cable that can be made (or bought elsewhere) for less than $15 USD.

This is why I like IUD + pill + condom... babies are evil.
I'm in a long term relationship. Same effect.
Kudzu would have been my top pick for a killer weed. I love gardening, but what a bastard plant. It can create a monoculture in a few years.
I'm getting more FPS than you on my 1000HE (tested moments ago), but as a whole it is not watchable. I'd guess 5-8 FPS on HD Youtube content.

If that's the case then these probably aren't the headphones for you.
