    Keyboards... Heh. You missed all of my favorite keyboard mistakes:

    • Over-sized Enter keys that displace the \ key
    • Regrouping and/or repositioning the function keys (particularly common on "ergonomic" keyboards)
    • Failing to provide any tactile feedback
    • Failing to provide sufficient resistance (think unsplit keyboards are bad? Try hammering on a laptop keyboard where each key bottoms out after .5cm.)
    • Too small (also common on laptops, but frequently seen on desktop keyboards as well)

    IMHO, the crazy "ergonomic" bastardizations would be far less necessary if it wasn't for the last three...

    I donno... I wouldn't mind having a cell phone that i could plug into the landline to charge. If i could make free local calls while charging, that'd be a nice bonus!

    Uh... Configuring a tuner card is a pain, downloading from the web is [should be] easy...

    As for why they're so obtuse, the theory posted at top is as good as any - they're working with a bunch of frightened deer who'll take off running if something unexpected happens.

    Maybe his mom did take responsibility for her actions. He didn't really comment on that aspect, and his mom isn't here to clarify. Maybe his mom does nothing but blame herself and her own weakness, all day, every day, as the end of her life rushes towards her. Maybe his dear old mother's compulsive self-degradation is at the root of what makes Mr. Coward so hostile towards gambling...

    So what?

    We authorize our Gov't to go after countless other scams. Roofers who don't finish roofs, shady charities, Nigerians who aren't actually deposed princes with nebulous bank accounts... Why should gambling be the one scam that gets a free pass?

    Is it because they tell you it's a scam up-front? 'Cause, they don't... Oh, they provide you with as much information as the law requires, plentiful disclaimers, etc. etc... But the hook is the same as any other scam, Get Rich Quick - and that's the one in big flashing lights.

    Yes, most of us are savvy enough to recognize the trap. Most of us will see a pit in the road before we fall into it as well... But the blind ones won't, not 'till it's too late. You can blame them for daring to walk when they should be staying home, waiting for death's merciful touch... or you can ask why we let someone dig a hole in the middle of the road without sturdy rails in place to prevent the destruction of our weaker brethren passing through.

    I'll allow just about anything else short of pop-ups (though i may visit ad-heavy sites considerably less...). But seeing my work machine bogged down by useless flash ads open on articles i'm using for reference really sets me off - kill 'em all!

    I think enough of us who are older have known people to be killed by drunk drivers and I honestly have no idea why drunk drivers are even allowed to live after they kill someone.

    So go kill the drunks that killed your friends. Be the vigilante.
    Or allow that due process of law should trump personal feelings in these matters.

    The bottom line is, if someone is getting pulled over for DUI, its because they were already obviously driving smashed.

    People drive poorly for all sorts of reasons apart from intoxication. Being tired, or distracted, or suffering from a condition that causes poor night vision all too frequently lead to accidents.

    And not everyone who gets pulled over is guilty of something. Cops make mistakes too...

    Hmmm... I could swear there have been various machine/browser auth methods tried before. And they're all useless if you use multiple machines/browsers. Might work if you could, say, store your key on a USB drive or something, but still... a bit of a hassle.

    Please, allow me to contrast your sad, bitter story with my own: I showed up at SO, logged in with a LiveJournal account that had been sitting around for years, and was on my way. No re-entering personal data, no choosing a password, no annoying email verification process... No muss, precious little fuss. In fact, it's even been good about keeping me logged in, something i've never been able to say of many home-brew authentication systems (or Passport, for that matter).

    Granted, I've less to complain about because of it... Eh, there's always plenty of off-topic posts to keep me happy.

    But hey, far be it from me to question the wisdom of our corporate overlords... if video sites are gonna destroy the 'Net, then We Must Pass Laws!!!1!

    Sorry, bro - if you can't figure out the huge, obvious differences between running a communications service and providing doctors, medicine, and equipment to sick people... you should probably work for Qwest. They need bright fellas like you for billing and sales: some of their customers still have a vague idea of what they're paying for...

    What surprises me, is when I see the same people decry Microsoft or IBM and then in related issues stick up for companies like Google and Apple. These companies are all out for their own interest, give back only what 'little' they 'have' to give back and don't give a crap about OSS.
    Why does that surprise you? MS, at least until recently, had absolutely no reason (from a business standpoint) to be loved or even looked at kindly. Respected, yes. Feared, sure. But loving users don't make you money unless they're also loving buyers (in the case of Apple), or loving ad-clickers (in the case of Google). Love doesn't put Windows on millions of computers, and love doesn't bring in volume licenses for Word.

    You might as well act surprised that people vote for the guy running for office instead of the cranky guy who shoots at neighborhood cats...

    Heh. Brilliant. After all, this is Slashdot, where experienced computer professionals get their kicks criticizing grandmas who read "...for dummies" books. It'd be terrible if a discussion regarding resources for non-professional writers wishing to improve their meager skills didn't devolve into a damning of such a resource on the grounds that it is old and full of hypocrisy. We should know better than to try and write without a proper linguistics degree.

    While there are technical reasons why this may be so (it's hard to index flash data), it's still a case of Google arbitrarily choosing one method over another.


    How can you admit that there is a valid technical reason for ranking one site better than another, and then refer to that result as arbitrary?

    Look, there are a lot of tough decisions to be made when designing a website, but you can't just claim ignorance when it turns out you made a bad call. Using Flash, DHTML, or images in place of text all make sense in some situations, but you've gotta know going in that they stand a good chance of making your site less accessible, and weigh this cost against what you're gaining by using them.

    No, i don't remember phone numbers. Well, i remember my own most of the time, but that doesn't get me too far.

    If i didn't have the phone numbers associated with names on my cell and in my address book, i'd rarely if ever call people who aren't in the phone book.

    Just a difference in people, i guess... my wife recognizes and recalls phone numbers easily... i can manage to remember one number for about a minute if i repeat it over and over again under my breath.

    I mean, if that's useful, i can submit a review of a piano, complaining about how the notes aren't painted on the white keys... Just let me know...

    Actually, given the relative risks involved, he was better off targeting the obesity first. Of course, he should still work on reducing or eliminating the smoking, but if you're gonna be stuck with an unhealthy vice then smoking is generally preferable to being badly overweight.
