  2. Re:A nightmare on The Future of Cars According to Toyota · · Score: 2, Interesting

On top of being hacked I wonder how accurate this is? How does it follow? by 'retracing' the wheels of the car ahead of it? I sure hope it's accurate! 2 things could happen, the car could hit an rock and set it slightly off course. The co-ordinates that the car ahead relay would no longer be totally accurate and the car may start turning at the wrong time! This reminds me of my Omnibot robot. I could program him to follow a certain track and do certain actions, but I had to place him exactly where he was the first time or the second time through the programmed course he would turn too soon and get stuck on a wall.
The other tricky part would be lag. What would the car do if it wasn't receiving the data from the car ahead in time for it to process the movements?
Both of these I'm sure are handled, but I'd curious to see how.

  4. We had a SUN demo on Sun Java Desktop 2 Review · · Score: 4, Informative

We had a rep into our office to demo JD from SUN. I haven't tooled around with the live CD that we were given, but to be honest I wasn't very impressed. We asked about why everything is so old on it and they said it was designed that way for stability. The market focus in their mind was for large numbers of very simple desktops, like call centers. The strength of the system is that it can be completely remotely managed on the fly. Application and OS properties can be manipulated on a central server which are then replicated to the desktops. This was demonstrated by changing the desktop colors on the central repository. After a few minutes the background magically changed on the desktop machine. The modifications can be made to a set of standard apps like mozilla, evolution and staroffice. For example you could push out a new proxy server setting to every client. The limitation is that you can't add to the managed apps. For example if you wanted to use KDE instead of the default Gnome you could no longer remotely manage it. Or if you wanted to use opera instead of mozilla, etc. Keep in mind this is still a very young product and they were frank in telling us that a lot of work is still being done. That being said I just don't see this desktop catching on. Suse 9.1 on the other hand is a terrific product that Novell is spending a pile of development dollars on. SUN shouldn't be wasting it's time fragmenting the desktop competition. Let RedHat and Suse duke that one out.

I booted up the Suse 9.1 because I'm intereted in the Novell Linux play. I was instantly blown away. This is the most well designed, streamlined and functional Linux desktop I've used. Finally something tha can be installed and run by an end user without hand holding from a geek.

What are the implications if we can't detect the 'dark matter'? What if our understanding of energy and gravity are wrong? String theory promotes the idea of multiple dimensions. If that's the case than how would we be able to detect those dimensions? We can show their existence with mathematics, but it's quite possible that's it's beyond our current understanding to 'see/feel' it.

Here is another article about cold fusion experiments. It uses sound cavitation to collapse acetone vapor. It sounds quite promising. I'm personally fond of the idea of using sound as a controlling force for the reaction. The experiments were funded in part by DARPA.
"The research team used a standing ultrasonic wave to help form and then implode the cavitation bubbles of deuterated acetone vapor. The oscillating sound waves caused the bubbles to expand and then violently collapse, creating strong compression shock waves around and inside the bubbles. Moving at about the speed of sound, the internal shock waves impacted at the center of the bubbles causing very high compression and accompanying temperatures of about 100 million Kelvin."

Why would I want 4 timezones of the same crappy canadian content?! Congress is suggesting to allow viewers to order channels a la' carte, which is a fantastic step, but it be to little to late.
