My guess is that the mechanism that supposedly reduces Alzheimers is the thinning of the blood. My un-educated theory is that the brain gets more blood flow when the blood is thinned out. It would be interesting to see if blood thinning drugs have the same effect, or if high cholesterol levels correlate to higher instances of Alzheimers.
> This wouldn't work. I remember these at Trader Joes [traderjoes.com] (what a kick ass store) in Brookline, MA (see also Stah Mah-ket and Stop & Shop). You have to close the door in order to activate the scanner. It spins the can (or bottle) around until it's able to read the UPC. So, stick no workie because you have to shut the door. And even if you got the door shut with your stick in there, you'd be screwed and stickless.
We don't have doors on ours here in Michigan, but they probably use some sort of sensor to detect the can. Not sure what type (if any) since aluminum cans are not magnetic.
Don't forget to mention the spot for the padlock on the back of the case. It is very slick. Just a standard padlock and you can lock the case closed ***and*** lock the entire case down to the desk. This would be a great feature for a computer lab.
If anyone here ever goes to a larger computer store in the near future, I highly reccommend "window shopping" down the Mac Isle. Those 22-inch flat panels are amazing!
How about this scheme: Instead of completely eliminating port traffic, why not have rules for bandwidth?
Maybe limit port bandwidth rates to Peer2Peer ports and give priority to other ports. better yet, uncap (at least partially) all ports during low consumption hours (i.e. 2-6:00 AM)
Wouldn't everybody be happy then? Web Surfers would have a fast connection, and the Warez crowd still download their favorite boy-bands by morning?

I caught myself laughing out loud to that one! Does that mean I am now a troll? Somebody must have turned down the thermostat in hell!
In States that charge for pop-can / soda-can deposits, we have automated machines that you stick the cans in for your refund. You stick the can in the machine, it gets crushed, and when you're done a refund receipt gets printed out.
My idea
Cut out the UPC symbol from a refundable bottle/can
Get a long stick and a roll of scotch tape
Tape the UPC on the stick
"Probe" the machine with the stick.
Not sure if it would work. There might be a mechanism that determines if a can has been crushed.
I hold no responsibility for machines you start probing.
> Earlier today I was flopping back and forth between 50 and Excellent.
Now it looks like Excellent again.
I didn't notice any flip-flopping on mine, but I just got on. Right now I'm actually trying to burn karma (heaven forbid!) to find out what is below excellent. I bet everybody gets Excellent now - including the trolls. *** Sigh ***
Yeah, so he's got a bunch of "basically" free caps. Now what? Solder a bunch together? Seems like a lot of work for a huge mess of solder and wires for what would amount to a fraction of what a single car-audio capacitor would put out.
Am I missing something, or is his time worth nothing?
....Should be coming out anytime now. Fall at the latest. I believe its four wheel drive AND is capable of 40 miles per gallon.
I've also heard good things about Honda's hybrid.
Other things to consider:
If you have a lot of "Stop & Go" traffic like what we have here in the Detroit area, a hybrid might be what you want. Parallel hybrids offer engine and electric motor acceleration simultaneously, while Series hybrids act more like locomotive powertrains, where the engine can be "super-tuned" for a smaller RPM range.
If you are more likely to be a "cruise control" driver, maybe an electric car like the EV-1 is more your style. I'm told that the EV-1's extremely low aerodynamic drag allowed it to achieve a top speed near 140 MPH merely by disabling a governor. (obviously driving like this cuts into battery life)
If you need to impress people at the local street races, best bet is to stick with old-school internal combustion technology. The new Corvette and Cobra Mustang are lookin' mighty nice:-)
Check out the different lists on Billboard.com Sometime. I agree with you that most of the top 40 stuff sucks (i.e. Britney Spears, Boybands, Etc.) I happen to prefer the Modern Rock list myself.
Perhaps what we all need is a "don't play their own instruments" Filter:-) Seriously though, an ignore list, or a feature like Amazon's "other customers who bought this also liked...." feature might have potential.
One this is for sure, Hard Drive companies would love this because we'd all fill our harddrives fast.
cron - schedule the script execution while I'm asleep wget - to download the html perl - to strip out the file names and write out a "wanted list"
maybe a script would even burn CD-RWs of the top weekly songs.
I'm sure that these songs are the ones creating the most traffic, so it is almost the same concept. I like my idea better because you don't need to manually type a bunch of stuff.
Would a phone with picture taking capabilities be useful for emergency medicine? Maybe a team of surgeons could plan for a specific surgury while a patient is in transit. Maybe they already do this. (Fortunately I've never had to ride in an ambulance)
As an American citizen, would I be breaking any laws if I offered $50.00 to the first person to make the remote control from the Xbox DVD Movie Playback Kit fully compatible with a tv tuner card?
If not, how do I change citizenship? (just kidding)
Seriously though, I'd offer another $50.00 for a Tivo clone that could run on this thing.

The website indirectly states that it could not be Bill Gates.

If the microwave could somehow have a thermostatic control, I could take a bag of grade-5 bolts and nuke them to a grade-8 tensile strength. The button for 1040-steel alloy can go next to the popcorn button. :-)
To properly control the grain structure of the metal, the heating & cooling processes have to be controlled precisely for temperature vs. time (very non-linear and not instinctive). Introduce a quenching process in the microwave, and I bet you could make some serious bucks selling/operating this thing.
I haven't researched it, but I don't think USB 1.0 will support the bandwidth for really good quality video.
To this day, I've never seen a good USB 1.0 TV tuner
and I think thats the reason.

How's this? (never tried it yet)

I don't mind looking like a fool if I get a good answer
Now if only somebody could tell me why my +50 karma was replaced by "Karma: Excellent"
Still no info on the Slashdot FAQs
Anybody know?

Yup, Me too.
Guess I might as well burn it all and start over.
*** Sigh***

Nothing wrong with low karma...
In fact I'm hoping this gets modded down so I can find out what ranks below "Karma: Excellent"
Maybe it means the same thing as Karma=50 and I'm too dumb to know?

OFF TOPIC: I got this message on my user info page.
Karma: Excellent (mostly affected by moderation done to your comments)
Why don't they track Karma numerically anymore?

who wants to lose weight when you could be gaining weight for fabulous cash and prizes?

I still want to see an option on GNUtella to automatically download Songs from a top10 list
Wouldn't be too hard:
cron - schedule the script execution while I'm asleep
wget - to download the html

I didn't catch that missing 12th file (army.11)
The file is on their site, but the link is missing.
Here it is:

If you keep having trouble with the mirrors, try a peer2peer search.
The files are already showing up on Kazaa.

I've had the best luck with the split files.

> Personally, I'd just be happy if people started writing dates and times in a common format, even if it's the USA's confusing mm/dd/yyyy version.
You bring up a great point.
For that reason, I try to show the date as "the 4th of July, 2002" instead of an ambiguous 07/04/02
A day should always be defined as the time required for the earth to rotate about the sun.
A Year should always be defined as the time required for the earth to travel around the sun.
So we're pretty much stuck with 365 days a year, although there could be a small adjustment to our day measurement to negate leap years.
Minutes, Hours, and seconds could be changed to a metric standard, but unfortunately we have too much invested into the existing system.
