    * auto-switch to top of list in "details" view - that may arguably the correct behavior but when opening files in the same directory from the same application I want the dialog to remember the scrollbar position to make going over a long list of files and opening some of them less annoying.

Is there any open source (or at least free) software that can fix these problems? Is there any software that fixes the last one?

At least Microsoft figured out by now how to make file dialogs resizable so we can see more than 6 or 12 files at the same time.

So the public can observe the proceedings, as long as nobody tells anybody else?

A secret simply cannot be contained this way. It sounds like they're relying on people to be honest - the data isn't even watermarked individually in each person's brain - so how can they really be surprised?

It sounds like they don't have a problem with the entire population of Canada being present (barring physical restrictions) but for some reason replicating the information later is bad.

Come on! If you don't want information to get out, restrict access to it. The story here is not that what happened; it's the broken security itself.

P.S. Let me get this straight: If I attend the proceedings, I'm not allowed to tell anybody? Even a spouse? Or am I only allowed to tell people I meet in person? Is it legal to send snail mail regarding the experience? email? send it to a mailing list? Is it OK as long as I don't do this for a living?

The whole thing seems to be based on the distinction between members of the press and non-publicators. This distinction is arbitrary and archaic.

  7. Re:Well, that seals it. on TiVo Starts Testing "Pop-up" Ads · · Score: 2, Insightful

My gf has been egging me to get rid of the TIVO and go with the cable company offering for a while now. She wants the ability to watch one show while recording another, and the ability to use the DVR with Hi-Def programming.

TiVo invested a huge amount in usability design and testing. Cable boxes are rushed to market so the cable companies can say they have them too, but when you figure out how slow and unintuitive the interface is you'll be sorry.

Just thinking about the stupid Cox Cable DVR makes my skin crawl, so I won't bother you with specifics.

I hate ads - when I lived in the (SF) bay area and my only option was a company that displayed a random banner ad for at least three seconds whenever you changed the channel I decided to just do without TV altogether. But what TiVo's doing doesn't really hurt you - they're just showing you stuff when you FF through commercials anyway. It's not like they're blocking the actual show (if they've made a mistake like that once it won't happen again). So who cares? The real content is still there.

P.S. I don't know how much hi-defness is actually retained when you save hi-def content. anyone?

Instead of messing with all that, I stopped by the Cox office and they gave us a new cable box for free and the extra DVR functionality for an extra ten dollars a month over what he had already been paying. He's not going to notice a big difference between that and Tivo, so it's definitely "good enough".

But only because he's never used a TiVo.

I own a TiVo, and hate hate hate using Cox's DVR, which has horrible usability issues, even apart from the response times (over a second for basic operations).

As a random example - if you view a list and press page-down, you're now at the TOP of the next page. Pressing page-down again brings you to the bottom of the page and another press to the top of the next page.

TiVo practically always does exactly what I expect when I press a button, and the layout is so convenient that I never have to look at the remote.

I would gladly buy TiVo's UI people a round of drinks, but could get violent if I ever met Cox's DVR's developers (it looks like they have no UI people and let the programmers do it).

Sonic the Hedgehog collection does the same annoying thing where you have to play Sonic 1 to unlock, say, Comics Zone or some of the other "bonus" games on the disk. How irritating! Either put those games on the disk or don't, but making me win Sonic 2 10 times before I can play them? Moronic.

It's actually worse than that, I'm afraid. Let's check gamefaqs:

Blue Sphere: Play Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic 3d Blast 20 times each.
Flicky: Play Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine 30 times.
Knuckles in Sonic 2: Play Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic Spinball 20 times each.
Ristar: Play Blue Sphere, Knuckles in Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and Flicky 30 times each.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Play Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles 20 times each.

So if you want to get to those games, you're in for a half-hour of select-game, start-game, exit-game, wait-until-the-count-is-auto-saved. That's right, you wait a couple of extra seconds when switching games so the system will be able to keep track of how close you are to unlocking the bonus stuff.

  19. The Atari Anthology emulation may be nice... on Back to the Classics · · Score: 4, Interesting

but the menus you had to navigate to get to the games made no sense. The games are represented as stars in constellations - seemingly a 2D menu - which you can only navigate as a 1D menu (prev/next). And doing well on one game unlocks stuff for other games - the developers expect you to treat the games as a whole, not just dive into the ones you like and ignore the others.

I loved Activision Anthology but I hate the Atari one. It's certainly not due to the emulation quality. It may be the games, but I suspect it's the way the material is presented. Perfect emulation isn't everything - you need to avoid ruining the experience.
