I got engaged in the #quake2 channel on Gameslink, so I didn't need to buy a Diamond Ring at the time...:-) Not that I'm suggesting you propose online (unless you're lucky enough to be marrying a fellow geek), our circumstances where very unique - she was in Florida, I was in England at the time.
My Mother has a ruby on her engagement ring that she would never trade for anything else. I know plenty of women who have different stones on their engagement rings. I suggest you talk it over with your girlfriend and see what she wants. Now, if you she decides she really wants a diamond engagement ring then well, you're just going to have to deal with it.
Wouldn't it make more sense to make the notes different sizes like many other countries do? When I lived in England, it'd be a simple task of sticking my hand in my pocket and finding the required note by its size. Blind people are still going to have the same difficulties they've always had figuring out what note they're holding (actually, I'm interested to hear from any blind readers on how they do this). [1]
I'm sure these new notes will be much more expensive to print than the current note. With the state that the US economy is in right now it seems like a very large waste of money.
And, on a personal note - I prefer green anyway.
[1] Aside: the disadvantage of this would be having to replace the bill slot on millions of vending machines instead of just reprogramming them.
It's all very low power (less than 1 watt) and you should be fine, just make sure you keep the antenna pointed away from your head. Now, if it was a big 100watt transmitter you would have something to worry about. If you're really, really nervous the FCC recommends you only broadcast for 6 minutes at a time.
You're much more likely to get killed trying to make cellphone calls whilst driving.
It's very good... wow Star Trek characters with Emotions and Personalities. The theme music HAS TO GO but thank god it doesn't have us boldly...going...anywhere.
It does need to get past the "Aren't those pesky Vulcans terrible, and aren't humans wonderful?" stuff. It got old in the first few minutes.
(Oh, and Armour plating fails if it's blown off...:-))
Thanks for the answers, not sure where this article went I never actually saw it but never mind:) I'll be coallating the useful answers into a web page and will let people know (probably a/. post if it gets accepted).
If we ignored or, worse, banned every piece of humour that offended someone there would be no humour left!
[insert standard wibble about being a tech support professional for ages and not being offended by cartoons about it, no sir].
It's really important to laugh at yourselves - comics like UF don't just make fun of the user, they make fun of all aspects of the job we do. Technical Support is bloody funny at times believe me:-) And the moments of sheer hell, well we look to UserFriendly to cheer us up!
Educating users on how to secure their mail and how to use a virus scanner is a no go area when it comes to stuff like this (thus speaks a Bob of 2 years experience before anyone asks...). I mean we can *suggest* it to them but "that's your job, isn't it??". End rant..:-)
Securing a server against HTML mail would spark outrage and nice letters from lawyers of course but on my own server.... worth looking into methinks (more a case of hatred towards HTML mail than paranoia). An "Ask Slashdot" in the making? Perhaps.
Suggestion to the people who develop e-mail clients (hello Washington University in my case) - can we have some sort of filter that just says "it's HTML mail, good bye *zap!*"
Enough rambling from me... 3 posts today, I'm beginning to feel like a bus company...
Been linking to this for a while - nice to see it getting the Slashdot treatment it deserves. I also recommend the other sites they run as well, all fun stuff.
Anyway, I'm off to York to shoot a few Scotsmen...:-)
A very sad day for comedy and the movie world indeed. I saw her in many Mel Brooks films and she was always brilliant in those.
My favourite role was as Lili Vonn Shtupp in Blazing Saddles (also one of the best films ever made - watch it if you haven't already) - it's less well known that she was actually a very talented opera singer in spite of the grating (delibrate!) voice she used in that movie:-)
Is it offtopic for Slashdot? Alternative maybe but it's a common fact that geeks tend to like the same sort of stuff so it stands to reason a lot of/. peeps will be interested by this news. I agree that there should be an additional obitury (sp?) news item so if people don't want to see this, they can filter it out.
At the end of the day, if it bothers you just ignore it.
We are beginning to sell customers boxes for their internal networks with Linux pre-installed (Cobalt Raq II's for the interested) which, *g* oddly enough - have been a picture of reliablility. With the new userfriendly web interfaces coming out Linux is becoming a very serious contender for small business.
I'm getting mailed about this folks, and no I didn't intend it to be a funny article - I posted it cause I assumed it would interest the Slashdot community. Whatever the guys did I would never condone murder or make fun of it.
Apologies if I offended anyone I certainly didn't intend to.
First impressions, a very thought provoking interview - I got the feeling Bill Gates had practised his answers well beforehand though, after all he probably gets the same questions asked at every interview.
Jeremy Paxman as ever was a superb interviewer, both men where obviously relaxed and enjoying it - it was nice to see contfronting Bill on some of the more sensitive issues "what's your favourite joke about you":). No real mention was made of the bugs in Windows (it was briefly skimmed over), which was disappointing but good in a way because we got to hear about something else for a change. All in all a good interview.
I was pleasantly suprised to find out about the charity Bill Gates runs, something I'd never heard about.
After a little but of trouble at first with sorting my DNS servers out - www.register.com have been superb.
Suggestion though, stick to your country's TLD - I'm in the UK so 99% of the domains I register for myself or.uk's. It helps people figure out where I am, add to the fact Nominet just plain rock when it comes to domain name registration:-)

Funny really, with all the problems I heard about with 2.2.11 my linux box was happy as a little duckie in a pond, it did yoyo impersonations with 2.2.10. Just lucky I suppose:-)
Congratulations to you both!

Stop listening to media hype!

Definitely! I know we've all thought about killing spammers but I doubt anyone would really do it. Or would they?

...or does it still look like a waste paper basket?
Still it's Linux documentation and anyone who writes this stuff deserves praise - but please fill it out a bit! Maybe turn it into a HOWTO?
AOL's BLOODY ANNOYING "Hello! You've got Mail!" chirp is one of the most annoying things in the world and I thank Tux I don't have to listen to it.
...:)
Now we have a film using the BLOODY ANNOYING phrase and some lady using a modification of said BLOODY ANNOYING phrase.
AOL: Don't be silly she isn't going to hurt you, honest.
Lady: Think up something more original
Film, I believe this was Tom Hanks who has been in some good films so I'll let him off this time
I'll definitely be buying the book but please! no awful cartoon series like they did with Dilbert. It just doesn't work.
My original headline for this was "Tux: By Royal Appointment" *shrug*
Well...officially you call her "Your Majesty" when first introduced and from then on can get away with "Ma'am". Point taken though :)
Well she probably has her own personal Linux guru to help her out. Hmm, wonder if I could get a job... :-)
Yay! And here's to the next 30 years :)

Let's see what 2.2.12 does...
Mr Sanity has gone home for tea, the hole industry is insane. Hell, my names Charles and I'm a baboon. Wibble.
