  3. This is getting absurd on New Blow for Microsoft in EU Row · · Score: 1

I like to say that I advocate for open source but if a company decides to develop closed source software that's their choice. That said, it's my oppinion that a bunch of companies are lobbying (and perhaps with no "good intentions") for these sanctions on MS even though it seems they have complied to a great length with the demands of the plaintiffs, but I argue, isn't there a limit up to where these compatitors can pretend compliance in regards to intellectual rights that MS has on it's own software? At the moment this whole thing is starting to look like a Witch Hunt and I'm starting to wonder who is benefitting on it.

  4. Even outside US or the same treatment from In2TV? on ABC To Offer Full Shows Online · · Score: 1

Couple of weeks ago the In2TV service was launched. There was a couple of shows that I really wanted to see but unfortunately I and some other users noticed it works in the US only (we were unsuccessful to fool the IP verification when the licence server need to authenticate the content that gets downloaded via the Hi-Q P2P client, any tip by the slashdot audience? my thought was to use a US based proxy when I'm about to play the content but I've tried many without any success). The issue is raised here http://messageboards.aol.com/aol/en_us/articles.ph p?boardId=560716&articleId=48&func=6&channel=Commu nity+Member+Forum&filterRead=false&filterHidden=tr ue&filterUnhidden=false.
Are there any more details if this service too will be US only?

I belive the proxy can be set under internet explorer (correct me if I'm wrong) however I haven't been able to find a proxy that could fool the service in beliving it's in the USA.
Can someone give us a clue?

What disturbes me is that even though I had requirements (except location, I'm in Italy but content got downloaded) it doesnt plays the video (head of the class, I was a kid and I loved that geeky show).
It opens it with the AOL Video player and tells me:
We appologize, this content must be played in the AOL Video Player. Please go to www.aol.com/video

    How crappy is that?

  7. We should think about polution as well on Laptop Fuel Cells Coming Soon · · Score: 1

Although the promise of running an entire day on these batteries sounds nice, given how many days there are in a year, how many laptops there are and the cost of the resupply network, I belive it will lead into the same problem that we have with the use of fossile fuels.

There is no such thing as patent infrigement when national interests are involved. It's very simple, Europe can't and shouldn't rely on a system that can be switched off by someone else. This doesn't mean it's superior or inferior, just an alternative.

  10. Slashdot and Sourcefoge should know better on Google Re-Opens Analytics Service as Invite-Only · · Score: 3, Interesting

I've been lucky to jump early on the analytics bandwagon. However it got very apparent that they are having some performance issues and the report generation was/is still very slow. That said I still like it very much as it gave me some nice data on where my visitors live.
However the thing that goes on my nerves is that now everybody has it including big names like slashdot, sourceforge, ati, etc. I wonder, if the service is free, shouldn't at least peple that make a lot of money from ads (slashdot, sourceforge, ati...) donate a percentage to the analytics service so that it doesn't interrupt/cripple the service for the rest of users.
Analytics in the end helps sites target better their content, thus making more revenue both for the site and google (if they use GoogleAd's), but what if they don't use GoogleAd's? What if google doesn't beef up or scale better analytics with that revenue? That will just cripple the benefit that this service brings.

The producers are going nuts these days cancelling shows like Enterprise and Fairscape. A message shoud be given that if they keep messing with trekkies (and there's a nerd in every trekkie) they'll loose audience. I love the Enterprise show, I know it's the same old stuff but hey, it keeps me going. As far as Nemesis, I didn't like it because they killed Data, the best character in the whole Trek universe. I'd have a theory how he might come back, take the peaces of Lore and put his memory inside.
