  1. It's the apps, stupid on KDE 3.2: A User's Perspective · · Score: 4, Insightful
KDE is nice and cool, I like it. However, "REAL" users need apps. For geeks like us who just admin, play with graphics, etc., things are dandy. There are even nice games that come with KDE. But there's a long way to go before Linux will ever be a realistic replacement for Windows.

    Key points being...
    • Apps users want and need
    • Apps users can install and uninstall without tracking down every bloody dependency ad infinitum
    • Standard UI across apps
    • A printing system that works AS EASILY as Windows

Until those things become standard across all distros, Linux taking over the desktop will be a sad joke.

I've purchased Slackware too, and it was about that. $45, considering retail off-the-shelf Windows is what, $200?, is quite a deal. The Windows you get with a new pc is quite likely to run just fine on all this 'innovative' new hardware. It's not like you pay $45 for Windows 3.1 with that shiny new pc. Is there really a point here?

In light of the recent Janet Jackson breast fiasco, I think you'll agree that Jane and Joe Jackass End User need a little more exposure to such things so they won't get their knickers in a knot over such silly crap.

    Uh, yeah.

I would be willing to bet $12 that there are more geeks out there WITHOUT a LAN and dedicated game server than there are WITH. Not to mention the hassle of getting other people to participate. Plus there's the convenience factor of popping in a cd and playing a while whenever you want. I was personally disappointed with Quake 3, as it's not great as a 1st person. In fact, I'd rather replay Quake 2 over and over. Multiplayer games are fine in geekland where you do have a LAN set up and a bunch of buddies sitting there waiting to do something, but in the real world, single player games do still make more sense for most casual game users.

  21. Grammar... and Lego memories..... on Lego to Stop Producing Mindstorms · · Score: 1

    WTF is this? :

If I were a more qualified sociologist, I'd think it may have inspired by the way that our children play today versus how they played twenty years ago.

Anyway, when I was a kid, we had Lego blocks. Maybe 4 major sizes, and a few gimick pieces thrown in. It required imagination. We had to improvise to build guns on our improvised spaceships. A favorite thing to do was to build space ships with a little chamber in the middle, closed off with one of those wheel socket blocks (these had a round hole bored all the way through, in which you would stick the 'wheels'). In this chamber would be a firecracker, with the wick sticking out of the wheel socket block. The challenge was to see if we could build a ship that could survive the internal explosion. Of course, they never would; they would blow all to hell, pieces flying 10 feet or more. Ahh, memories.

I hadn't heard from this Aunt of mine, or any of her relatives in about 20 years. And then, out of the blue, I get this call because she's having trouble with her Windows 95 computer! She calls me, long distance, expecting free tech support, because my mom told her I was a "computer guy" and gave her my number!!!!

I do what I can when I'm at people's houses, if they're having trouble and are nice. But, my immediate family live a few thousand miles away, so I don't do much support for them. Fortunately, they're fairly bright, and have a close friend who *THINKS* he knows everything, so he gets to do most of their tech support.

One of the biggest problems, as someone else posted, is that they think that because I do *computer stuff*, I'm a techie geek who fixes broken pc's all day, and loves nothing more than to fix everyone's broken pc's for free in my free time. Where in actuality, I almost never tinker anymore with pc's, having moved on to programming and admin'ing. Sometimes, yes, it's fun to build and upgrade my own machines, but that's a hobby, for me to enjoy geekily, in my free time.

Anymore, when people try to suck the life out of me via free tech support, I think of some obscure job somewhat related to theirs, and ask them to do it for me for free. For example, if a Doctor asks me for free help, I'll ask for a teeth cleaning in return.
